Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
I’m not being harsh. Sharman clearly has a lot of potential, but we are not currently in a team development phase: we are trying to win enough games to make the finals and perhaps the top 4.
In this scenario, we need to pick our best available team every week, having some regard for team balance and match ups. Ratts has said he is experimenting with structure and it appears that’s why Sharman was brought in two weeks ago. He’s been so-so and I suspect that, unless he has a much better game this week, when Higgins comes back, he will go back to the Zebras.
And that’s how I want to see our team selected. I don’t hold with the “give the young guy a block of games” nor with the “let’s rotate our reserve players through our AFL team.”
As I have said, we aren’t in a development phase. We should select our AFL team purely on ability and performance.

Need to develop a deep list capable of success, not just best 22. There will always be injury and form loss issues.meher baba wrote: ↑Thu 26 May 2022 3:49am I’m not being harsh. The weekend showed the club has done a great job with atleast 6players capable of slotting straight into the senior team and performing a role.

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
I can’t answer your question directly, but I remember posting that I thought Membrey was better value for the Saints team in 2016 than the guy we picked up as the Number 1 draft pick in 2104.
At that stage our tall forwards were Josh Bruce, Nick Roo, and either Tim or Patty. I reckon Tim was in and out of the team so McCartin could get a run. It’s interesting looking back at old posts.
You can’t play the modern game, unless you have AFL level fitness. The club had high expectations for McCartin and he was favoured at the selection table in front of Membrey, but who was the better athlete in 2015?

Melbourne have the 3 talls as do Brisbane when they’ve got McStay and Daniher injury free. I reckon we need to have 3 talls and I’d keep Sharman in the team.

Do you think we will still have only 1 flag by 2104?
St Kilda should never trade with Essendon and Sydney ever again!!!

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
I like Sharman, but he doesn’t look like he will ever be an aerobic player like Membrey.
The kid knows how to kick a goal and he does present. If he kicks 2 goals a game and draws a tall defender away from King which allows King to 5+ regularly, there is a spot for him. He does need to contest , defend , chase, harass and at the moment he is below par in those areas - but these are areas he can work on.
I see a bit of Jason Heatley in him - he needs to play deep and lead out dragging a defender with him and creating space behind him.
The issue is we are competing for a finals spot and we don’t have the privilege of letting all our development players get senior games. It’s very obvious NWM and Windhager are at the top of the list for development time - and carrying more than 2 development players in he senior side comes with risk. I think we’ll see 2 of Sharman, Owens, NWM and Windy dropped after the bye as we start to tackle Brisbane and some of the other top 8 contenders.

Did Sharman do enough today? I'm not sure & I'm a fan. I think he, Michito, Nasiah & Windy along with Clark, Billings, Butler, Higgins need a run with Sandy next week to decide.

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
I only watched the first and last quarters today, but based on the 50% I saw today , I think he goes out next game. Butlers 5 at Sandy sees him come back in and Owens offers more when the ball hits the deck.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Sun 29 May 2022 9:55pm Did Sharman do enough today? I'm not sure & I'm a fan. re the development phase/chasing finals positioning phase
part of the discussion
if we are serious , don't we need a footy ready squad of 30
boys to complete the task
(even before the possibility of ... injury / concussion / covid / left field shenanigans)
not prepped or getting prepped for the big show
by playing in the two's

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
realistically
we gotta aim at cementing a top four spot
for the next 5 years
not banging on about not winning in 22
or banging on
if we are LUCKY enough to jag one in 22

He should not be competing with the big guy with a moustache.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Wed 25 May 2022 11:53am He was all set to mark and goal in the first quarter until some big bloke with a moustache jumped in front of him.
If he is, then he will have dragged his opponent into the contest.
Making it harder for the big guy with a moustache.
His job should be to keep his opponent away from the contest.
If his opponent zones off then he should lead and the mids should hit him.
He is a reliable mark and a way more accurate kick than the big guy with a moustache.

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
Definitely under pressure.
He can play, and could be used more often going into F50, but the pace of Butler and creativity of Higgins is likely to see him dropped

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
Ironically if we improved our forward 50 entry work I think you’d see Sharman in play more
Brereton is a tool but he said something interesting yesterday ….when he suggested Saints forwards need to have a trigger to get on their bike and lead up at the ball carrier - that trigger is when a Hill or NWM or Sinclair is streaming forward 50…..they should ALL be leading up with small support
These guys by foot are good enough to hit targets and I’d Sharmans opponent drops off to double King we just honour them kids lead
Still to many long bombs into 50 yesterday that a Melbourne will just pick off all day
That’s who you gotta be setting up to beat

re ... the jagged 1
yes
(i figure we'd ALL take that)
happy little vegemites we'd Be
dunno if the other sides do it this way
but ... intentfully playing a 'squad of boys'
through the 1's
for the next 100 games
opens up a ton of opportunities
for management/development

Does he have a tank? He looks puffed when I’ve seen him shoot for goal.
He’s doing ok. Needs to have more impact.

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
Coops is a strong pack mark, but I seem to notice that he is pulling back on efforts to mark deep forward, although he took a smart one yesterday, but I think he has been instructed to contest, but do so in a way to allow King and Membrey more room- seems to be working.

Re: Sharman's goal in the last Q
Dunno when intentional or fortuitous, but that mark suggests the idea that he drifts forward towards King that then lures his opponent to double up on King and get him room looks like a neat tactic .
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
