Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
Surely there are better, more important, worthwhile things to discuss than a non event finish to an opposition game where by the losing team coughed up a 30 point lead.
A player kicked the ball as the siren went when 80m away from goal, who cares.. yeah it was probably a bit silly or risky but really, come on.. Id have been filthy to lose a game in that way.
The poor over umpiring of the overall game and the rubbish stand, ruckman nomination, and dissent rules are probably more important...

Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
I don’t have a problem with the decision paid.
I like that the umpires used ‘common sense’ in determining the decision.
My bugbear is the complete lack of consistency in applying ‘common sense’ to other decisions during a game.

Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
The free occurred during play.
But the clock does not stop immediately and there is no provision to reset the clock.
But the Richmond player is entitled to his kick.
But the 50 metre penalty only applies for time wasting not for kicking the ball away.
Now as we know from the siren gate saga play ends when the AFL says it ends not when the umpire says it ends.
So if the ball is kicked away after the siren is it time wasting ?
How can it be, the time has expired, the clock can not be reset.
The umpire should signal end of game and then allow the Richmond player to take his kick.
Which is what he did.
It can't be deemed time wasting because there was no time to waste so no 50 penalty.
Then maybe there were Sydney players over the mark but they were in next to a number of Richmond players disputing the umpires decision.
Penalty for obvious dispute should be loss of free kick.
Richmond is a powerful club as is Sydney.
The AFL could overturn the umpires decision but then they can not award a kick 50 closer because it never happened.
It physically never happened.
No provisional kick was taken from 50m closer.
It was easy for the AFL to disallow St Kilda's score but the AFL can not create or add a score.

Actually I believe there is a rule which states 50m is given if a player doesn’t return the ball on the full to the infringed player?
Totally separate to the ‘time wasting’ rule

Hardwick will get a 50m penalty for this.
The umpires will WIN the next match Richmond plays.

Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
Wasn’t an obvious free, siren was sounding and crowd going nuts when the umpire was making the call, would be very hard to hear, common sense decision IMO.

Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
The free was paid late because the controlling umpire did not see the incident, another umpire realising the controlling umpire had missed it, blew his whistle a little after the incident.
Even if the Sydney player heard the whistle he would argue "I thought the whistle was signalling the end of game".

Re: Richmond was robbed of 2 points
After some verbal fumbling, fudging and conferring, the umpire in charge came up with: “he didn’t hear the whistle.”
How would the umpire know whether the whistle was heard, or not? The player wasn’t consulted, and if he had’ve been: “ oh, yeah I didn’t hear the whistle.”
It was a terrible decision, based on catering to the crowd.

Seems in that you would have to tackle a Swans player and turn him around 720 degrees or more before paid holding in the ball

It's not when the umpire signals it, it when the first field umpire on the ground hears it.

Richmond robbed of 2 points, who gives a rat’s.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

It is when the AFL says it ends.perfectionist wrote: ↑Sun 29 May 2022 2:46pmIt's not when the umpire signals it, it when the first field umpire on the ground hears it.
You have forgot sirengate.
If it were when an umpire first hears the siren the result favours St Kilda against Freo.
(I can't remember if St Kilda would have won or been a draw.)
But the AFL ruled it ended when the siren first sounded.
Freo got the points.
Freo coaches and staff were on the ground during play if it were when the umpires first hear.
Excess player on the ground = loss of score.
50 metre to St Kilda now for umpire dispute and abuse, Baker could not miss.

This 100 times over. An iffy mark and the player wraps up the player with the ball and its 50.
