Re: Would we?
I’ve said for a while, if we were going to splurge on a big name, Tim Taranto would be my ideal choice.
Elite goal kicking mid. Him, Steele and Crouch in the middle… with a number of others rotating through, we’d be unstoppable

Re: Would we?
What would it cost the club to get Taranto to the Saints, GWS would want a big return to trade to a specific club.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Would we?
Taranto would be ideal, right combo of inside /outside and can go forward.
You would expect if he nominated us, that we'd have to give up a first and a second?
Vs DeGoey who is a free agent.
Prefer Taranto overall (better clubman) , but it's a big cost in picks.

Re: Would we?
I'd defintiely take Taranto, but we are now going well enough that we probably won't have the necessary draft picks to trade for him.

Steele, Crouch, Taranto, Jones and Gresham
That's a good starting midfield.

OK. Let's make it about two players then.SunnyErnie wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022 11:49am That's not what I was saying. If it was out of 2 players and one of them was a Free Agent and the other wasn't, I would always take the Free Agent.
Taranto v Shaun Higgins
or
Taranto v Zach Sproule
or
Taranto v Steven Motlop
or
Taranto v Michael Hurley
So, you'd take any of those players over Taranto because they're free agents and cost us nothing?
Would you have taken any of them over Brad Hill, Paddy Ryder, Dougall Howard, or Zak Jones? How about Dan Butler or Jack Higgins?

Re: Would we?
Love to get Taranto as i think GWs use of him has only scratched the surface.
That said isn't Amon a free agent ? Taranto a better player but not sure we can afford both?

De Goey for mine…Hopper and Taranto would cost too much in draft picks, plus De Goey is the explosive, dynamic player we need (should have been Petracca!).

Re: Would we?
Please stop splitting hairs. If the 2 players were roughly as good as each other I would always go for the Free Agent. That way we still have the draft pick in hand to use in the National draft. If you are always trading away your picks then eventually you will fail because you will have no youth coming through.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022 1:00pmOK. Splitting hairs? You're the one making ridiculous grandiose statements. I'm merely calling that out.

It all depends on the draft picks and the draft pool.
You can't be absolute in your approach. That is the quickest way to fail.
You need to be felxible and understand the needs of the club against the players available.
Take last season. We stayed quiet during the trade period because we wanted to draft Windhager and Owens. We needed the picks.
We couldn't get close to Carlton's offer to Cerra and get the players we wanted.
Given Ben King's preference to stay at the Suns and Hannebery's self imposed pay cut, we are now in a position to go hard for another player. Taranto would be an awesome get.
DeGoey, whilst a good player, comes with a huge amount of baggage that we don't really need. He has a history of violence and lying to his club.
We can do better.

Not really sure what brand of crack you're smoking LLS however, these players are NOT free agents (restricted or free): -Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022 11:39amReally? Re: Would we?
With the draft haul from last year I would want to be adding to that .... so Taranto for 2 firsts or DeGoey free agent and some high end youth?
DeGoey thanks along with some more youngsters ..... and Clarkson to get the best of DeGoey ..... at some stage the penny will drop

Posters are conveniently overlooking Tim's expressed wishes to remain in Sydney and be a one club player.

All of that list (besides maybe Shaun Higgins) have been delisted at some point of their career, which makes them Free Agents for life. (Tim Membrey also fits in that category when his contracts run out, just a heads up)Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022 4:21pmSame stuff the AFL website is smoking!

Not really.
It’s clearly a conversation about who forumites want more so then how realistic it is that we can actually get them.

The original poster that I quoted made the claim that they'd choose a free agent over a trade every single time. I merely pointed out some of the free agents available that we could potentially target instead of Taranto.
And, yes, it's Tom Lynch the ex-Saint, Crow, and current Roo.

Re: Would we?
I can't see us delisting Tom Highmore. If he negotiates with us for a longer contract, he might get it.
A better offer from another club would probably offer better chances of playing but greater financial reward would almost certainly mean performance based clauses.
We plucked him from obscurity and have nurtured and developed him.
If we start looking for taller defender options, you might say he is surplus.
For now, I'm happy with Battle, Wilkie and then Lienert and Highmore.
But we'd be mad to not look for a bonafide tall Defender. Highmore is a hybrid interceptor who is learning to be a defender and not a third banana.
