Sliding doors. Can one be All Australian without being classed as elite
IF ...
Jade Gresham gets a fair crack at this footy caper after two injury-ruined seasons ...
THEN ...
he will be All-Australian at some stage, and maybe even this year.

Not the headline but.

Hmm Mr Pot - Mr Kettle
I think the reference (if you also read the subject heading) is the Barrett does not consider Gresham ELITE - but is {pre}anointing him for AA
Also - Barrett has a punch-able smug face - so there is that!

Honestly, who cares if our players are regarded as elite?
Richmond showed you don’t need many of them to be successful. Culture and a solid game plan is way more effective.
Genuinely, if our game plan is ‘elite’, I promise the media will start to claim our players are elite, too.

Re: Sliding doors. Can one be All Australian without being classed as elite
The whole "elite" thing has done my head in for a long time. It's barely verifiable. Maybe a few vague statistics to go with it, but other than that, it's a ridiculous way to categorise a footballer.
The only thing that's "elite" is wins. Everything else is noise.

If you are in the AA squad , you are Elite.
If you are on the fringes of the AA conversation your are probably A grade
If you are not in the conversation at all, you’re a solid B grader at best.

Hence the OP’s bewilderment

Funny what qualifies as elite.
When I watched us lose unexpectedly to the Dees in the first round of 2017 I looked at who in our team stood out as potential elite game-changing forwards.
Number 12 and number 22 stood out like no others.
Gresham in his second season and Riewoldt in his last were a class above.
He haa been elite talent since drafted and just needs to tidy up his field kicking.

Re: Sliding doors. Can one be All Australian without being classed as elite
Surely "elite" and membership of the AA squad are the one and the same thing.
Or is there some Masonic lodge of "elite" players that you have to wait to be discreetly invited to join?
What a silly debate. Imagine if we were to win a flag, and Gresham were to win the Norm Smith medal in the GF, and he also to be selected for the AA team. And then every expert in the AFL world declares that, despite all these achievements, Gresham is definitely "not elite."
Gresham wouldn't give a toss, the club wouldn't give a toss and the fans wouldn't give a toss.
One of the worst things about the internet is that it puts pressure on journos to keep on churning out the stories, so you end up having to plough your way through a lot dross.

The whole point of the discussion is supposed to be that Barrett did not consider Gresham Elite - but is pumping him up for AA.meher baba wrote: ↑Mon 18 Apr 2022 3:44pm Surely "elite" and membership of the AA squad are the one and the same thing.
