I'm confused by your point Curly, so what are you saying?, our imports are performing better than Carlton's imports ?CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 24 Mar 2022 9:11pm The old StKilda has to many imports gets rolled out from dooms dayers. I’m saying it’s bulls***. I’m saying there’s no perfect formula to list building.

To a certain extent I suppose, but yeah, no question there is a heap of luck needed too, or at the very least, a little bit of luck goes a long way.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 24 Mar 2022 9:33pmVortex wrote: ↑Thu 24 Mar 2022 9:27pmI'm confused by your point Curly, so what are you saying?, our imports are performing better than Carlton's imports ?CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 24 Mar 2022 9:11pm The old StKilda has to many imports gets rolled out from dooms dayers. Re: To many imports
I have to say Carlton's midfield will take them a long way this year. Something our club needs to WTF to?
Pittonet is an under rated ruckman with De Koning as his backup they are a pretty decent duo, then you add Cripps, Walsh, Kennedy, Cerra, Hewett, Fogarty, Durdin & Curnow they bat fairly deep now.
No surprises that Newnes is not getting a game now Voss is in charge.

Re: To many imports
It's a midfield game now, but we've been obsessed with bringing in flankers and wingmen, and fans want to pay a King's ransom for another tall forward!
Mids mids mids.
Mids mids mids.

Re: To many imports
Cripps was not a top 10 pick and one of the best from his draft year.
If we wanted to recruit Hewitt last year would he choose us ? Even for more money. Our same old ….not many choose to come to us.
It would have been nice to get Trelor when Coll had fire sale but we had no space.

You can only get who's available.
Jones and Hill are mids for the record.

I was simply pointing out how ridiculous the commentary is around our recruiting players from other clubs is.The Fireman wrote: ↑Fri 25 Mar 2022 10:52am this thread is sort of like the umpiring threads...doesn't make a lot of sense.

Re: To many imports
The recruiting of players from other clubs is pretty much the same as drafting non AFL players. It is who you select that matters, the price to get them and not so much which pool they came from.
In recent times the Saints seem to be getting the biggest bang for our "buck" from passed over players. ie Marshall, Sinclair, Wilkie, Highmore, Sharman....
We are ok-ish recently at drafting younger players. Hopefully the youngsters (Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitchito Owens, Marcus Windhager, Oscar Adams) that we took last year strike gold.
However a common problem is that our ability to pick players that become quality mids has been found to be wanting.
Our recruiting of players from other clubs has been very much a mixed bag. The lesser lights in Steele and Membrey being the out-performs. The "bigger" names of Hill (trade cost high) and Crouch (trade cost zero) not really hitting the mark with us. Ryder who was supposedly "past it", has been excellent though injury prone and so once again has been excellent value from a player out of favour at his earlier club. Though Ryder is the only such older "end of career player who has so far worked out. Frawley, McKernan and the never made it P Hunter all being a waste of time. The Cats by contrast have kept themselves in the finials by gaining older players who can still play well (though there is an argument that this keeps them a good side, but denies them premiership glory).
Overall our recruiting in recent times has failed to deliver in the most important area which is the midfield. The engine room. Steele is our only truly quality mid, and the only mid we have that other clubs would want. Sadly we seem to have been obsessed with acquiring small forwards and this has been an under-perform.
The rest of our positions are reasonable to good. But our midfield is sad.
The Blues have steadily rebuilt. One might argue that they took a while, but they now have a good and well balance list and best 22. Plus now seemingly a coach that can coach. Their team jig saw is looking more complete than ours.
In the midfield Cerra and Hewitt add quality back up to the already acquired Cripps, Walsh, Kennedy, Setterfield and others. The Dogs have great mids, but lack the quality talls that the Blues have assembled.
Now I am not saying that the Blues have made it, but they now have a very well balanced platform to build upon.
Meanwhile at St Kilda we still have a midfield that lacks quality.

You're damn right. Since 2002 they've placed higher than 7th once (5th). They've made finals three times and bombed out immediately, including one finals spot that was a achieved because Essendon got penalised for their drug saga, pushing Carlton up from 9th to 8th.
