47 - HAYES
Our recruiters should be very happy with themselves tonight.
Hayes is going to create a really nice selection challenge this week.

Re: 47 - HAYES
Hayes should be the first picked for the Freo game, there's other players that played tonight that should be left in Melbourne next weekend.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: 47 - HAYES
Play both. Hayes can play various positions. He’s a pinch-hitting ruckman only, Maybe means Marshall can play forward the whole game or he and Hayes can share second ruck duties.

Re: 47 - HAYES
AFL gives him 2nd best on, just behind Lipinski

Re: 47 - HAYES
To be honest…
He could play pinch hitting ruck, as a midfielder or as a small forward for all I care on that performance.

Very impressive
Best or tied for best with Marshall
I was not convinced that he should be picked. I was very wrong.

On TV (I live in Perth) he appears slow and lumbering, but to his credit, he dishes off before he gets caught, so has good awareness. IMHO

Re: 47 - HAYES
Apologies to Vortex for the name drop… but he made the observation (in a funny way) that they may be the best quarter he’ll ever play!
I think it’s a reasonable point to remember he’s a debutant and for us all to lower the expectations a touch for next week. A blinder of a 1/4 out of nowhere that led to a reversal of dominance and saw us nearly pinch the match out of nothing!!! Will pbly be a bit quieter next week
That being said, I loved it

Pace isn’t everything. From what I can see he’s strong and plays taller than he is and makes good decisionsWellardSaint wrote: ↑Fri 18 Mar 2022 11:38pm On TV (I live in Perth) he appears slow and lumbering, but to his credit, he dishes off before he gets caught, so has good awareness. IMHO

Re: 47 - HAYES
He is 8cm shorter than Marshall. Other than that, based on what I saw on my TV tonight, he is pretty effing comparable barring the obvious lack of height.
In fact, Marshall could learn from the way he attacks the ruck and King could get some kicking lesson.
He has been compared to Blake, maybe Stewie Loewe is a better comparison.

Re: 47 - HAYES
He was fantastic but he’s no ruck man. We lost centre clearances 18-9 and Grundy destroyed both him and Marshall at centre bounces. Ryder has to come back in when available. Hayes can play a roaming forward role

Re: 47 - HAYES
Max King spends a lot of time getting monstered under the ball as a deep forward. I mean really monstered.
Would it be so ridiculous to try him in the ruck?
At least he would get a clear run at every ball up and only have to grapple one player at throw ins.
Hayes leads, has very strong hands and looks much more capable of actually crashing a pack.

Re: 47 - HAYES
Seriously, if Max could ruck, You could play Ryder, Marshall, King, Hayes and Sharman all at once and just keep the ruckman in the defensive half with a 50/50 tap chance in every stoppage.

You can tell he hasn’t been at the club long enough to learn the ‘Saints’ system properly yet!

Re: 47 - HAYES
What about that mark / free kick over the shoulder that he wasn’t paid in the last 2 minutes near our goal square . Of course it had to be Ray Chamberlain, he’s be the only umpire not to pay that .

Compared to what? They are actually pretty mobile and their job is to catch the ball.

I was convinced that he was going to be picked for this match as soon as he came to the club. And I was spot on right.

Re: 47 - HAYES
He played well around the ground and in front of goal. His one grab marking was outstanding and his kicking for goal is good. However, he won just two hit outs for the game, since he is too short for modern day ruck and doesn't possess the leap that (say) enabled Jason Blake to win centre ruck contests. Jack is 192 cm tall (6 feet 3½ inches in the imperial scale). That's the dilemma, one which has stopped him from getting a game elsewhere before now. On the positive side, he has been captain of his SA club, so it would appear that he has leadership skills. If Paddy ever returns, and RoMa hasn't been run into the ground, I would play Jack at FF and move Tim Membrey to a half forward position and get rid of one of the midgets.

Re: 47 - HAYES
Where's all this talk of Sharman being a part time ruckman come from- he's a pure and natural forward. Hayes is a utility ruck/ forward. Both can exist in the same team

Re: 47 - HAYES
It was f****** disgraceful and typical form from that little maggot Razor Ray.
If the AFL wants players and supporters to pay more respect to umpires they should get rid of cheating little deadshits like Razor Ray from their ranks.

Re: 47 - HAYES
He's a Blardiner, a Blake / Gardiner hybrid. He wills himself to contests, competes, scraps and refuses to wave a white flag when the odds are against him.
He's no centre bounce ruck but neither is Marshall, their value is from contest to contest - both are 2nd rucks at best, ruck rovers at worst.

Re: 47 - HAYES
As opposed to the other 99% of St Kilda fans who also thought with no Ryder that Hayes would play in his place?
