17 Captains Don't Rate Us
Does anyone have access to the results from past surveys and how accurate they have been?
It feels like we are on a knifes edge with this list.

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
I don’t know what you are referring to, but I have no doubt that inside the forty world, players and managers think St Kilda is a shambles, although one that has recently done a lot of tidying up. Nevertheless, old habits die hard..and the legacy remains.
Nasty Pastie Tim Watson..makes a joke with Sam Edmond on air, that he wonders if Gil McClaughlin has to make a special effort to shut his St Kilda favoritism down…harmless enough?…
On the back of their story that St Kilda has been a diabolical drain on the AFL purse strings, sucking up 50 million dollars in the past 10 years, more than Collingwood, Geelong…a,b,c etc., combined.
These voices have punch. No doubt Timmie was telling Seb all about why he should come home and leave the Saints a cup,a years back.
Player managers know all about it too…I think we are vulnerable and likely to be taken as suckers…but the current mob are doing well and standing strong….but then, so are Gold Coasts..so are Brisbane’s…
Our list is on a knife edge cos nobody wanted to come and play for us. Ben King was an exception.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
who cares.
17 captains didn't rate Melbourne last year.
Only one thought they would make the 8.
all 18 thought Richmond would make it

You'd think captains would be as knowledgeable as most, captains also have access to opposition intel and analysis so that's why I was wondering if the captains survey has ever been compared to actual results to see how often they get it right?

Of those 17 captains I don't rate more than half of them. So, so what.

Who cares what they think? It's completely irrelevant, as is the chest puffing of so called football experts this time of year. Don't pay attention to it

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
From 2016:
Which other club is most likely to reach the grand final?
Hawthorn (7), West Coast (5), Fremantle (3), Geelong (1), Richmond (1), Sydney Swans (1).
Nobody predicted the Bulldogs and one other team predicted the Swans would make it.
From 2017:
WHICH SEVEN OTHER CLUBS DO YOU THINK CAN MAKE THIS YEAR’S TOP EIGHT?
Sydney (17), GWS (16), West Coast (16), Adelaide (15), Western Bulldogs (15), Geelong (14), Hawthorn (14), St Kilda (11), Melbourne (6), Essendon (1), Fremantle (1)
WHICH OTHER CLUB IS MOST LIKELY TO REACH THE GRAND FINAL?
GWS (14), Adelaide (1), Sydney (1), West Coast (1), Western Bulldogs (1)
The premier? Richmond. Nobody even had them in the 8.
11 clubs tipped us to make the finals. We finished 11th with 11 wins
2018:
Which seven other clubs apart from your own do you think can make this year’s top eight? (18 times seven selections)
17 – Adelaide Crows, Geelong Cats, GWS Giants, Richmond, Sydney Swans
14 – Port Adelaide
10 – Melbourne
5 – Hawthorn
4 – Essendon, West Coast
2 – Western Bulldogs
1 – Collingwood, St Kilda
Which other club apart from your own is most likely to reach the Grand Final?
7 – GWS Giants.
5 – Richmond, Adelaide Crows.
1 – Sydney Swans.
The Grand Final was between Collingwood and West Coast.
2019 was bit closer with Richmond as the favoured pick.
2020:
Which seven other clubs do you think can make this year's top eight?
17 – West Coast, Richmond, GWS Giants, 16 – Collingwood, 15 – Brisbane, 13 – Western Bulldogs, 10 – Port Adelaide, 8 – Geelong, 5 – Melbourne, 3 – St Kilda, 2 – Hawthorn, 1 – Essendon, North Melbourne, Sydney
Which other club is most likely to reach the Grand Final?
7 – GWS Giants, 5 – West Coast, 4 – Richmond, 2 – Collingwood
Nobody had the Cats making the Grand Final but 2020 was a weird season.
2021:
Which seven other clubs do you think can make this year's top eight?
17 – Brisbane, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Richmond
15 – West Coast, St Kilda
9 – Western Bulldogs
8 – Collingwood
4 – Greater Western Sydney
2 – Gold Coast
1 – Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Melbourne
Which other club is most likely to reach the Grand Final?
7 – Richmond
5 – Brisbane
3 – Port Adelaide
2 – Geelong
1 – West Coast
One Captain had the Dees to make the eight. No captain predicted the Grand Finalists.
17 had Richmond to make the finals
15 had us and the Eagles to make the finals
2 even had the Suns to make the finals - must have slipped off the pub before voting.
I think the take away from this is that captains are notoriously poor judges of other teams.

Typically, they did what they have done at every quiz they ever sat for, copy the bloke sitting next to them.

Based on the above brilliantly assembled and analysed data, we are certain grand finalists and potentially premiersLife Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 10 Mar 2022 2:40pm From 2016:

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
Predictions are great fun, (at a safe distance) and they trigger a lot of unconscious stuff..
I really wonder what hard core professional gamblers make of Aussie Football and gambling on the games themselves. Fascinating stuff.
For instance, do Chinese or Russian or Indian gamblers, who have no interest in the game, gamble on AFL?

AFAIC, those 17 captains can go and do what the Ukrainian soldiers in Snake Island told the Russian warship to do.

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
All AFL predictions just pick the ladder from the year before. If they don't they get ridiculed for being ridiculous. No one believes anything until they see it.

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
That she did
I'd often wondered if the Captain was in fact a real captain or more of the Flight Centre Guy style captain.
According to Wiki, other than just 70's pop with a cringe-worthy image, it turns out Daryl Dragon (no relation to the Hunter bros) was in fact a pretty handy keyboardist playing for the Beach Boys, with whom Toni Tennille also played with.
Tennille sang back up for Elton John on four albums, Pink Floyd (The Wall album) and Art Garfunkle amongst others.
They were also married for 39 years and I can imagine after 39 years the scraping of those fangs may have done a bit of damage

Re: 17 Captains Don't Rate Us
Actually - you can spin any story with a good set of statistics
The results from this pol are not that 16/17 Captains don't rate us - but that 16/17 Captains rate at least 7 other teams higher than us. So it is possible that they ALL rated us to finish 9th which with the fall of a few pieces into place means that we are a real finals contender. Half a poll = GIGO
