Then there are volunteers and have to deal with egotistical umpires that feel aggrieved.

D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 04 Mar 2022 2:28pmIn my experience a lot of people leave umpiring at local level due to the abuse & threatening behavior of spectators and club officials.
Post playing, I was club runner for many years from U18 to seniors and one of the roles as runner in those days was to escort the umpires from the field post match. I was required to intervene on many occasions from potential physical assaults against umpires from club supporters and saw normally reasonable middle age people (I knew) swear and berate young umpires.
The worst behaved were parents of U18 teams and these were normally very young umpires on the end of the abuse.
I am very well acquainted with a senior umpire coach and am surprised by your comment regarding senior umpires, my experience is quite the opposite and have found the seniors very supportive of the junior ranks.
A lot of senior umpires don’t want to adapt or follow league or AFL direction. New rules get ignored leaving club coaches league officials frustrated not to mention kids.
A lot of the senior umpires also cherry pick the games they want to do no matter the level of competence. This often leaves to frustration of better equiped younger umpires.

I know it’s not apples to apples but the thought that in some parallel universe Curly is punished somehow every time he posts about the umpiring tickles me.
Imagine if there was a free/50m penalty against the club for every post.

Well not really. The captain can seek clarification later. Move on with the game. If they do it with the ball in their hands it should be a 100m penalty.

So it's not abusive supporters, officials or players that are causing umpire shortages according to Curly, but other umpires...
Apparently the umpires also shot JFK, ate that bat in Wuhan and invaded Ukraine too!

Old mate again with usual rant. Come down dud y to o local footy and see how much abuse there actually is. We now have people that walk around the ground yelling adults to stop yelling out ball or high.
Yep big issue.

The biggest umpire abuser on here by a mile trying to deflect blame away from him and those like him, and divert it to of all people, the umpires!
It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so predictable.

Re: New rule: Not questioning umpiring decisions???
I noticed at one stage last night when Petracca gave away a 50m free to Carlton Max Gawn went up to him to chastise him for his overreaction that cost Melbourne a goal.
I can see where the AFL is coming from, but agree that when such a penalty results in the opposition shooting for goal from the goal square that is far too severe a penalty. On the broader issue of 50 m penalties, I have long thought that in the case where a 50 m penalty brings the player close to goals the AFL should designate a "penalty spot" like they do in other ball sports located no closer than 40 m from goal.

I can't think of many rules over the years that have actually improved the game.
It has always been a great game despite the interference from well meaning officials.

Re: New rule: Not questioning umpiring decisions???
What was it about Robbie you loved:
- His Mad Football Mind?
- His chase from one end of the ground to the other to whack a guy?
- His play for one week get suspended?
Actually I am not sure he was suspended as often as people think - He was reported 13 times and suspended for 22 weeks, including 12 weeks after a fiery outburst against Carlton in 1984 so the other 12 times he only got 10 weeks over a 68 game 7 season career.

Below the belt mate.
Robbie was a sublime footballer with exceptional skills. Good mark and very good kick and played with passion.
Opposition arseholes wouldn't get away with the s*** they put on Robbie these days so he wouldn't have to belt them.

Re: New rule: Not questioning umpiring decisions???
I'll give you three recent straight up
The 6/6/6 rule has opened the game up so much more at centre bounces
The Stand the mark/free kick rule stopped the creep in an arc forcing you to kick to one side which for the defending team was easier to protect
The head duck in a tackle or the anti selwood rule

Only the 6/6/6 is a genuinely new rule.sunsaint wrote: ↑Sat 05 Mar 2022 4:20pmI'll give you three recent straight up

You've never been allowed to duck your head. The umpires just stopped enforcing it. Which led to players leading with their head.
Standing on the mark would have always been the case in the days when the game was more positional than it is now. It's a rule that has been tightened and a long time coming.
I'm still not convinced about this one. Stop the sideways creeping, but the ump must call play on more quickly. The player on the mark should be allowed to move backwards at any time and come forward at any time as long as they're behind the mark. Especially when standing the mark for a shot at goal.

Not in the eyes of Razor Ray - he can chat to you - but not the other way around
How many of the 50s were paid by Ray??
