Re: No Ryder for R1?
Hmmm, in doubt with his Achilles. They’ve been managing it all pre-season but recovery is slow and they won’t risk him. Not a lot there.
Noted that this article mentions that Howard was rested and is being managed as part of his program. No injury.
They say Hanners remains a day to day proposition and that Coffield’s surgery went well

Happy to manage him if he is not ready , no point risking a season ending injury in round 1

Re: No Ryder for R1?
Just another reminder of how fragile our season fortunes are, our midfield plays much better when we have a genuine ruckman like Paddy and they really struggle when he's not there.
Also another reminder of what our number one recruiting focus should have been last year and what it will be this year and with a fair bit of GST.
Problem is....where are we going to find a ready made ruck to replace Paddy at years end.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
He is no Paddy Ryder, but I reckon if Lethlean & Gallagher had their time over again they would stump up next years 2nd rounder for Tristan Xerri. Obviously North wanted to hang onto him, although he still might be gettable at seasons end?Vortex wrote: ↑Mon 28 Feb 2022 9:35pm Just another reminder of how fragile our season fortunes are, our midfield plays much better when we have a genuine ruckman like Paddy and they really struggle when he's not there.

Hopefully they have a plan going forward as we need two competive ruckman who can be dangerous when resting forward.
I wonder with Paddy out whether we play Campbell, Hayes or Sharman as the 2nd ruck? My vote would be Hayes - I reckon he has something about him, he is a very good contested mark and gives a mobile big body at ground level.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
Well, it’s a long season and if Paddy is not ready he is not ready.
We do need to get off to a flyer, though, unlike in 2021. A good start is huge and builds momentum. Look what it did for Melbourne and the Bulldogs last season.
The Dogs were unbeaten until Round 7; the Demons until Round 10. It was no surprise they played off in the big dance.
Not saying it can’t be won if you butcher the start, but good seasons build a momentum of their own.
Let’s hope Marshall plays and can get a chop out from Hayes or Campbell or someone else capable.

Issue is
We play Collingwood R1 - in a game we should/need to win
Who have a dominant ruckman

Not a good sign, 1 week will turn in to 6 weeks before you know it.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
I think it was against Collingwood that Marshall announced himself as a ruckman to be & that was when Grundy was flying. That said, it was more around the ground. Not many in the league can match Ryder's tap work.
We will need a 2nd ruck, especially round 1 when petrol tickets will be at a premium. I cannot see Sharman doing it, nor do I want to. Campbell or Hayes, in that order for mine.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
Can't win a premiership in round 1 but can lose it with injuries etc.
Ryder not ready so be it. Hanners is like Haley's comet shows up once every 75 years - games. Great when it happens but very rare.
Essendon game will be critical in regard to looking at either a Marshall/Campbell combo or Sharman . Huge ask to come from Sanfl to AFL and while he may end up good there is a romantic blindness to what Hayes can bring from the outset.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
While it's likely that Tom Campbell will ne named No.1 ruckman against Collingwood, I hope that Max Heath gets a run in Saturday night's pre-season against the Bombers because it's not beyond the realms of possibilities that he is ready to play - he showed potential in the intra-club game.
I'm all for showing faith in young talent by throwing them into the deep end and quite certain he will debut at some stage in 2022. One thing for sure, Heath will ultimately become St KIlda's No.1 ruckman!
Same goes for Windhager (185 cm) and Owens (191 cm) who are going to form the core of the team's midfield in the not too distant future.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
I fear we should not expect to see much of Ryder any more. A chronic Achilles at his age will be hard to overcome.
Marshall and Campbell? Marshall and Hayes? I probably prefer the former.

Put Battle in the ruck.
..and can we buy a South Australian ruckman in the mid-season draft? Surely, there is one or two floating around the SANFL!
We stack so much expectation (I mean the team..) around Marshall and Ryder these days they are like the Divine Twins, the Vedic Hindu twin Gods.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
I get your point but, a baby giraffe against a beast like Grundy or even Draper with 3 pre-seasons is a VERY big ask. Max has some go in him but, he's going to get monstered playing against the big boys. We'd be better with Marshall and the chop-out 2nd ruck in the back half of last season was Membrey.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Tue 01 Mar 2022 11:36am While it's likely that Tom Campbell will ne named No.1 ruckman against Collingwood, I hope that Max Heath gets a run in Saturday night's pre-season against the Bombers because it's not beyond the realms of possibilities that he is ready to play - he showed potential in the intra-club game.

Re: No Ryder for R1?
Grundy is the strongest ruckman in the game. He's a beast. Even Marshall will be busting his arse dealing with it
