The Clarko Hypothetical

Post: # 1938949Post Sainternist »

Assuming Tom Rockcliff isn’t full of crap, Alastair Clarkson is making plans for a coaching comeback (https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-ne ... 80b5a330e2)

If Ratts doesn’t get a contract renewal, would Clarko be interested in getting his job? And would Clarko be the man we need to lead us to that elusive second premiership?

P.S. In case you’re wondering, I actually want Brett Ratten to succeed as a coach of our beloved club.

I have no doubt hell be coaching again next year, the question is where? He has a great record and Im sure he would do a good job at the Saints, but I just believe Ratts is the man to get us to the 'holy grail'. So if I had to chose its Ratts for me.

This whole thing has Gold Coast written all over it.

OMG nooooo.
Let Clarko coach the Cats, or Norf, or anyone else.
The club has put a huge effort into a very important structure with Ratts in the driver's seat.
Change the coach and he'll bring his own preferred assistants.
The entire system will be thrown out by Clarko and rebuilt.
We'll be set back several years.

The Kremlin really wants GWS n GC to be competitive.
They got Sheedy into the Giants early on, a few years back.

I wonder whether the Kremlin took the angry dwarf for a nice meal somewhere and promised him that they'd parachute him into Metricon to save the GC.
Seeing Ben King do his knee would surely add to the concern for the AFL, that in their opinion the Suns need more assistance.

What's interesting is that we already have a lot of Clarko's posse in the house - I like the support and IP we have placed around Ratten.

If, as expected, Clarko rides into the GC like a puppet from Team USA, I hope our coaching & administration stays intact.

If Clarkson goes to CGS, then you can bet that his declared salary will only be half of what the AFL will give to him in a brown paper bag

You think he'll be emailing David Rath n Roughy to ask them to join him at the Suns?

Geez I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL went house-hunting for him, and do a lot of research for schools for his kids, etc

Nothing would P me off more then clarko taking GC to the flag before us especially as they have been given everything by the AFL and we get scraps.
Its disgraceful how we get treated its like we are just making up the numbers for the AFL.
Lets have a great year and stick it to the AFL and the other rich clubs that look down on us.
Go SAINTERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t meant to be rude but If people are naive to think that Clarko is coming to St Kilda then they have no idea how the competition is run.

For all the largesse bestwoed upon them, success at GCS has eluded a range of coaches including Rodney Eade.

Would be sad to see Clarko off-Broadway and I reckon he feels the same way. I reckon he'll favour a Melbourne club and, should Ratts fail ti improve this year, the Saints would have to be tempting.

Clarko could come to the saints

But we’d be the Tassie Saints if he did…

It could happen the Tassie saints imagine the assistants we get from AFL the players we would have first crack at in Tassie and the membership increase of predicted over 10k and we could still have Moorabbin as our Melbourne base interesting thought ha.

My brother in law had a friend who worked at Gold Coast when Eade was coach (within the coaching panel). He said all Eade did was scream at the players and in coaching meetings would just moan about how useless this player was and how pathetic that player was. He couldn't believe Eade was an AFL coach.

I heard similar stories around Pagan and Malthouse when they went to Carlton. Funny, isn't it, that when these coaches suddenly don't have great playing lists anymore they lose they s***. They have such inflated egos because of their previous success and the media canonising them over their so-called genius, that when they are hit with the reality of having less than optimal playing lists, it all falls apart very quickly. They lose their composure and start blaming everyone around them.

Absolutely.
For sustained success you need good recruiting.
Coaches are basically a nil all draw. They have all played AFL.
Better ones coincide with good lists.

The better recruiters don't get enough credit. They are the real heroes and they are in the background - we don't see them or acknowledge them - but they are the ones we should be poaching/going after.

Good but aging record (so has Makybe Diva)
Seemed to decline as the exceptional players of his Hawthorn era left. Still wonderful tactician, game day coach but coaching is 8 days a week.
Was unable to stop Sam Mitchell white anting and Jeff's vindictiveness, lost board. Possibly no one could have stopped that set of negative forces, but it would have taken a toll.
Ratts is damn good and has a good platform now. Remember we were a basket case when he took over. Works well with Gallagher and Lethlean.
All the talk of switching horses is so capricious, fickle. Have to question the world view of AFL that is so hot for Clarkson and therefore dismissive of Brett. Or maybe its just stirring?
