Re: Jack Hayes
Is there a contractual obligation for us to draft a 192cm South Australian every draft?

Re: Jack Hayes
Well Sharman is not a South Australian either.
But all three were drafted from a SA Club.

Sinclair, Marshall, Wilkie, Highmore and Sharman were all overlooked at their drafts.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Tue 21 Dec 2021 8:43pmWell Sharman is not a South Australian either.

I have no doubt they come from a big list of potential rookies and second, third and fourth chance draftees we have followed and have so far proven to be very smart choices.
Hayes looks to be another example and he is now 194 cm and a very likely prospect.
I wouldn't mind betting he will turn out to a bargain, should we decide to take him with a supplementary spot. He becomes eligible in a few weeks and in my opinion, its a no brainer.

Re: Jack Hayes
As far as I can tell it is pretty much a risk free bet. It costs us one of two spots so we still have a spare for mid season draft if required and this is before we factor in some unexpected action/injury that frees up another spot. I guess the only concern is how good is he really?

Re: Jack Hayes
Way to go!
If he is judged to be good enough, at 194cm, he will be a real point of difference for our midfield.

Re: Jack Hayes
He has no where near AFL standard agility to allow him to play midfield. If he gets offerred a position on the list it will be in the McKernan role, as a big forward/pinch hit ruckman.sendmehomehappy wrote: ↑Wed 22 Dec 2021 8:02pm Way to go!

Re: Jack Hayes
I agree, but I'd be looking for more of a Marshall type big bodied, marking and clearance winning 4th mid/2nd ruck.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Mon 27 Dec 2021 3:38pmHe has no where near AFL standard agility to allow him to play midfield. Re: Jack Hayes
I watched most of the SA grand final and liked Hayes impact on the game.
He’s strong and does the little things that benefit his team.
A great mark and seems to have good endurance.
A strong bodied key defender maybe is where he can help us
Can pinch fit in the ruck but would likely struggle at AFL level in that role.

Re: Jack Hayes
just a quick question...
As Hayes is training with us does that mean we get first pick on him OR can another team swoop in and sign him once the date of signing has opened up?
Apologies if this is a silly question.

I’m pretty sure he can sign with any club that has room on their list.

Re: Jack Hayes
Yeah. That’s correct.
We get no preferential treatment in signing him up. Anyone can swoop in at any time.
That being said, we could also tell him at any time that his services are not required. He does get paid for his time training though. Like a casual employee.

Re: Jack Hayes
Well, if we haven't already, all clubs could now snap him up, as of back on the 10th up until the 9th of March.

Re: Jack Hayes
If another club approached him, you would think he would pay us the courtesy of giving us a chance to make him an offer. Gives him some bargaining power. But I suspect it is only us interested in him.

Re: Jack Hayes
Agree. I am not sure how many other clubs have spots let alone two and want to try their luck on an untested utility (afl level) that you haven’t trained with personally. Most likely we will get him but not sure where he will play. Seems good at various places but not great in any of them

Back up . if he was really good, he would have been picked up in the draft.

Re: Jack Hayes
"depth utilities" will win a premiership this year.
Unless injured, we will use the whole list, first year players (even deep selections) will play multiple games. Topping up the bottom 6 is as important as topping up the top 6 right now.
Such is the nature of our game at the moment.

Not sure if your ‘meat n potatoes’ response is tongue in cheek given recent examples of non drafted players playing success ?saintly wrote: ↑Wed 19 Jan 2022 2:18pmDJ Higgins wrote: ↑Wed 19 Jan 2022 12:04pmAgree.
