Re: Mids
Quite a jump in the age range isn’t there...
Goes from 22 to 27
We could be in serious trouble if Clark, Bytel and Byrnes don’t come on as we hope for
Be good to move on Hannebery next year and snag a 23-24 year old that’s peaking

Re: Mids
I think the heirarchy must still have a fair bit of confidence in Bytel.
Lets hope he breaks out in 2022. Certainly possible considering he dominated a couple of VFL games at age 21, and is still developing considering he missed a lot of footy

Re: Mids
Billings 26
Mackenzie 25
Gresham 24
Sinclair 26
make the list 17, fill that gap a little and with experience and skillsets taken into consideration, have as much right to be listed as half the list above.

Re: Mids
Agree however I just have the smallest of question marks on DMac, he needs a really good year in 2022 before I'm convinced he is capable of being a premiership player.

Re: Mids
Add Gresh and potentially Higgins also to the mix.
Forget Hanners.
The key will be keeping Jones and Gresh on the park this year. We get a full season out of them and we'll be a much better team. Also need Bytel and Byrnes to go up another level. I have faith in both of them to do just that. Also young Connelly. (Sincs MK2)
And hopefully the footy gods will be kind to us and Paddy can get through the season. Makes such a difference to.our whole dynamic.

Re: Mids
So who's going out of the side (eventually) when the new guys come good? I suppose it will be the older brigade but you need experience. Does it come down to foot skills?
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Re: Mids
Dont forget Gresham, plus Higgins wants to play through the midfield. I also believe Peris will become an exceptional wingman. McKenzie & Billings also play on a wing.

He showed in the final match last season of what he is capable of, when he is given a chance, and added scoring goals to his toolbag as well.SuperDuper wrote: ↑Wed 24 Nov 2021 11:52pmI think the heirarchy must still have a fair bit of confidence in Bytel.

Re: Mids
Now that Bytel is over his injury issues, after a solid pre-season with Mr Walsh, i think we will get a good idea of Bytel's capabilities during the 2022 season and then we'll know if we have a good un or not.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Ha. I agree. Think I called that just after he was recruited.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 27 Nov 2021 10:58amI see a bit of the Greg Burns in him. Time will tell, I s'pose
Visually there's a few cues, that little skip with the back foot on a kick, the quick hands and vision and strong legs in a fend off and absorbing contact.
Just lacks that short distance flat kick and a little pace off the mark.

100% agree Hanna's is shell of the player he was & won't be part of our push to win a flag so give Byrnes a chance to see what he has to offerBanger9798 wrote: ↑Sat 27 Nov 2021 10:08pm If our window opens in 2024-26
We are better off playing Byrnes over Hannaberry

Re: Mids
The over arching picture of our midfield is its well sorted for the future and very positive.
We have the older experienced players in Hannebrey, Ross, Jones, Crouch, Steele, Hill, McKenzie, Billings and then the next era Clark, Bytel, Byrnes, Gresham, Higgins, Coffield, Paton, Conolly then followed by Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager, Owens, Peris & Kyle.
As well as the ruckman Ryder 33, Campbell 30, Marshall 26 & Heath 19yo. Depending on Heath's development and Campbell's output, we may have to look at trading in another mid aged ruckman at some stage.

f*** me. Seb doesn't even make it into your "older experienced player' list.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Sun 28 Nov 2021 10:18am The over arching picture of our midfield is its well sorted for the future and very positive.

Re: Mids
I reckon we should try to fit as many as we can into the side, even if some alternate between playing as mid sized forwards ... flankers, etc...
We need more playmakers in the side, midfielders in the making if we have to initially - be a little patient ... it's preferable (to me) over playing 3 small specialist forwards who are just taking advantage of all the good work upfield.
Higgins will do as the small forward.

Re: Mids
Agree. Especially when you consider how the game is played these days. Once the ball is bounced 30 players are in half the ground and most of them become midfielders anyway.samoht wrote: ↑Sun 28 Nov 2021 11:23am I reckon we should try to fit as many as we can into the side, even if some alternate between playing as mid sized forwards ... flankers, etc...
