Whilst I love Marshall and absolutely can see the importance of him to our structure, once again I think we're overating our own players. Ridley has won a B&F and finished top 4 in another. Simpkin just won a B&F and looks like he's becoming North's best player. Sean Darcy is rapidly becoming a great ruckman. Some great players on that list.
I'm happy with Marshall, but he needs to play a bit more. His last few years have been great, albeit injury interrupted this year. I reckon he needs to work on his tap work, but he's a superb back up ruck who can take some great marks up fwd.

Being the smartest kid in the dumbest class isn't anything.Moods wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 3:38pmWhilst I love Marshall and absolutely can see the importance of him to our structure, once again I think we're overating our own players. Jack Steven won four B&F's with us during some of our worst years but wouldn't have got close to one in a successful team.
Goddard struggled to get close with us and won one at Essendon in his first season there.
Marshall finished top 4 in 2020 and runner up in 2019.
If Marshall played for Essendon or North, he'd almost be an odds on favourite for the award.
Darcy has had one good season. Marshall has had two and a half.
If he's not selected in the top 10 in a redraft, then recruiters clearly have no idea what they're doing.
TBH, I just suspect the journo was lazy. McInerney in the top 10 is a clear joke. The bloke can't kick at goal to save his life.

Gee whiz, some factually dubious and some other very subjective opinion sprinkled throughout that post. Goddard finished 2nd and 3rd in our B&F in 09/10 respectively. How close does he have to get? He also made AA in both those seasons so referring to him as being 'smartest in a dumb class' at bombers fairly insulting to him I would have thought. He was a key cog in our team in our very best years. RE Jack Steven, whilst I never rated him as highly as some on here, I would have loved to have seen him play in our better years. His speed and spread from packs is the exact reason we stuffed up and recruited Lovett. In a midfield like we had then, he would have been great and I would have envisaged top 5 in B&F on multiple occasions. In fact I would almost argue that he would have been more valuable than a Jack Steele in that 09/10 midfield as I believe that Steele would have taken over the tagging role from Jones and been our tagger, just bigger bodied and better skilled.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 4:52pmBeing the smartest kid in the dumbest class isn't anything.Moods wrote: ↑Wed 17 Nov 2021 3:38pmWhilst I love Marshall and absolutely can see the importance of him to our structure, once again I think we're overating our own players. BTW I'm not saying that Marshall shouldn't be ranked top 10 in his draft, just not saying that he's better than ALL those players that have been mentioned. I'm excited by what Marshall will bring to the team next year once he's injury free.

I reckon Marshall is a better number 1 ruckman than back up ruckman
Numbers back that up
He was easily better in 2019

Re: Top 10 from every draft for the past decade reranked
Maybe. But Ryder is a better starting ruck, so Marshall has to start 2nd

What makes Ryder better?
Is he better around the ground??

Re: Top 10 from every draft for the past decade reranked
Two different questions deserve two different answers.
I think that's a question best asked of and answered by our on ballers. I'm fairly confident they would prefer Paddy in the centre square, at ball ups and throw ins.
No doubt our backs enjoy RoMa on ball. RoMa moves like an old fashioned ruck rover, Ryder is your genuine ruck.

Re: Top 10 from every draft for the past decade reranked
Would you rather a ruckman
Who gets 18 possessions and has 20 Hit outs
Or
One who gets 10 possessions and has 30 Hit outs?
Bearing in mind
HO stats are the most overrated stat in footy

You can keep asking questions until you get an answer you like. Bottom line is we have the best of both worlds.
While Ryder is at the club and is fit & can jump, he will be seen as the #1 ruckman.
Scores level, the ball back in the centre, 30 seconds left in the game. Who are you having as your ruckman, Ryder or Marshall?

Re: Top 10 from every draft for the past decade reranked
You are spot on BM, it is the most overrated statistic in the game. Unless you have a fantastic Ruckman who actually puts the ball to the advantage of your midfielders. I believe that Ryder is that Ruckman. That isn’t to denigrate Marshall as he is also A very good Ruckman, however against the very best such as Nick Nat and Gawn they tend to jump all over him. We saw in the grand final how crucial centre clearances can be, particularly with the six, six, six rule. You are quite correct in saying that marshals work around the ground is first rate. I just believe that in the centre bounces Ryder is more competitive, therefore he has to start there.

I'm sure GT understood the value of ruckmen more than most.
He,in alot of ways, was ahead of the times.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Top 10 from every draft for the past decade reranked
Yeah but Long has a pretty mean looking mullet
Jack Billings looks nice and he plays nice. Always had that clean cut nice look about him
I’d prefer to see JB grow a mullet like his mate Sinclair had last year…or maybe grow a moustache like Maxy and Steeley
Or…what about Zac and Skunk take him down to their favourite tattoo artist and paint him up a bit…
Nahhhh…wouldn’t suit him…on the other hand…he could look really nice all dressed up the way Danni Laidley was the other day
