Doubt he will be captain in 2022.

We need to get to a point where Geary, Ross, Hill, are not automatic selections based on what they HAVE done but rather what they are doing.
If he isn’t gonna be co-captain he should have been chopped and delisted! Now, his managers could pull a swiftly by playing the cards in the right order.

1) state that you expect to be captain and selected player in first 22
2) let the others be cut and delisted
3) slip past the November 29th deadline
4) now, and only now, gracefully step-down as co-captain
5) Line up at halfback for St Kilda.
6) Round five to round sixteen , Sandy.
7) When injuries are rife, and season has gone completely pear-shaped, pop up for two games
8) Round 18, GT takes over as care-taker coach, dropped again.
9) Rounds 20-22 Orange boy
10) 2023 AFL 360
Sorry Mrs Geary, thank you & goodbye to Jarryn. If you can not find better players then I understand why St Kilda will not improve in 2022.
Different to Riewoldt isn't it. Roo was a walk in star, captain or not, so when he 'stepped-down' (i.e. was stepped-down), there was no question he would be riding on the bus, first class VIP seat. But with Gears, it could be far more embarrassing. He could stepped-down from bus driver, and asked to get off the bus altogether.

When Roo said he would step down as captain in 2016, there was no question about his selection everyweek. Not so for Gears.

Disagree , better player than anyone we have cut, even with his Steve Austin legs. . Best 22 is rubbish as never happens . Good sides use best 28 and i think he is there but guys in front of him.
Great teacher , even if at Sandy for Paton, Connolly, Coffield, etc in how to play the role , where to go etc - much like Roughhead did in final year at Hawthorn.
Many a longer term captain has stepped aside pre retirement - Cotchin doing it this year coming.

Fair enough..
Take your point about best 22..never happen..well not for us..Richmond and Melbourne had a best 25..at the most, and they played pretty consistently through the good years..Even maybe WB

But it is fun to do a best 22

Cooper Sharman has to be in it too.

I got my new October 28th release..hot off the press...the world beats to my drum..

Paton Howard Geary
Wilkie HIghmore Coffield
Hill Steele Sinclair
Membrey Marshall Gresham
Higgins King Sharman

Paddy Jones, Crouch,

The second of the 2 teams banger9798 has put together shows the lack of back up talls on our list.

I like the one Jake posted up in his Saints TV video today:
Backline: Webster Howard Wilkie
HB Highmore Battle Sinclair
C Hill Steele Billings
HF Marshall Membrey Higgins
F Gresham King Butler
Followers Ryder Crouch Jones
I/Change Clark Hannebery Sharman McKenzie

I think this is our best 22 for Round 1.

Confident Bytel will benefit from another, hopefully tougher, pre season.
Bytel's last game wasn't too bad.
Best thing about his last game was he added another tool to his belt - he is now a goalkicker and he knows it.

I have big hopes for Connolly and Byrnes. I think by mid next season they'll be really starting to influence games.

Bytel is the enigma. Can he develop the tank required to be an inside mid? He'll need to improve his fitness by about 80%
And this is where development comes in. We need to get better at developing players and building their capacity.

Really hope this comes off. Player dev has been our biggest failing for yonks now IMHO. And not as if we haven't known or tried. One of great hopes with appointing Richo was that that was supposed to be his strength. I'm certain we'd never have managed to develop Gawn if he'd been on our list. I'm not even sure petracca would have come up like he has with us whatever anyone says about how obvious it was he'd be a gun. If we can get this right, there's hope!

Which is why clubs play as a 22. I do believe all three are best 18. I'm not convinced Battle is best "18". Can see him in 22 depending on opposition but I see Coffield making the 22 before him.

What I find interesting is Hanners must be the likely captain or vice captain of our 3rd 18.

Interesting how many of these teams have Hill and Billings as wingers when both have failed there in the past. Why are people thinking they will be successful there next year or is it just wishful thinking ?

I thought the first half dozen games this season before his foot injury took hold Billings was playing off the wing and doing quite well.

With Hill, it is his ideal position for a team playing well. He's won premierships and a B&F playing off the wing.

I guess we all have our fingers crossed for Billings to be injury free & Hill to be at his best.

Apart from this season he has played his entire career playing on the wing. He played in 3 x premeirship teams (Hawthorn) as a wingman, won a Doig Medal (Fremantle) as a wingman. Ratts switched him to defence this year to play him back into form. To suggest he has failed as a wingman is plainly incorrect.

Without having inside knowledge I believe his drop off in form had a lot to do with his lack of gut running. His running abilities had been his trade mark until 2021 and he simply wasnt fit enough this year. He like a number of his team mates had not done the work in the off season or preseason.

Having said that I dont think we can afford to play all of Battle, Highmore & Wilkie in the same side. Thats unless Wilkie is released to play a more attacking role - running it out of defence like he did in his first season at the club. TBH I believe he would offer more in that role than Coffield and is more attacking and better by foot. Hopefully having a new defensive coach will bring some fresh ideas to the team, as I believe Wilkie has a lot more upside playing across the HBF rather than the lock down BP position. That move would then allow Highmore to play the lock down BP & Battle at CHB, where they would be more suited.

I like a few believe Paton & Gresham will take sometime to regain confidence and form. So Webster gets the lock down small defender role across the last line and Sinclair/Wilkie running it out of defence.

Defence: Webster Howard Highmore
Sinclair Battle Wilkie
Mids: Hannebrey Steele Hill
Higgins Membrey Billings
Forwards: Butler King Marshall

Followers: Ryder, Jones, Crouch

Int: Clark, Sharman, McKenzie, Byrnes

Emerg: Coffield, Geary, Wood, Long

You know I don’t really care what Hill did with Hawthorn and Fremantle. Too long ago. Two seasons with us and he hasn’t played many good games on the wing and can’t defend to save his life. Certainly play him at the start of the season but if he doesn’t perform we have other options.

That move would then allow Highmore to play BP & Battle at CHB.
You know I don’t really care what Hill did with Hawthorn and Fremantle. Too long ago. Two seasons with us and he hasn’t played many good games on the wing and can’t defend to save his life. Certainly play him at the start of the season but if he doesn’t perform we have other options.
"Cant defend to save his life" yet our coaches moved him to a HBF? It was his lack of hunger and work rate that dropped off, it wasnt that he couldn't play on a wing. I believe you will see a different side fitness wise in 2022, Hill included. Thats why our fitness coach was given the heave ho at the end of this season.

If Ratts wants it, I am confident he will be able to regain his form and consolidate a wing position again. He is too good of a ball user/player not to in the side if his form is right. How nice would it to be to see him, Hannebrey & McKenzie rotating through the wings and getting forward to kick goals.

I think this is our best 22 for Round 1.
Interesting how many of these teams have Hill and Billings as wingers when both have failed there in the past. Why are people thinking they will be successful there next year or is it just wishful thinking ?
Apart from this season he has played his entire career playing on the wing. He played in 3 x premeirship teams (Hawthorn) as a wingman, won a Doig Medal (Fremantle) as a wingman. Ratts switched him to defence this year to play him back into form. To suggest he has failed as a wingman is plainly incorrect.

yep, we were mentally off this season (when do I say 'last season' December?)

It affects some players more than others.
Hill is a million dollar kid and from what I've heard he is sensitive to peer approval, but I swear I could see a facial expression he wore at a ball up this year, that just said, 'Well, I'm here...whatever!". It clearly showed to me (and shoot me down if you like, cause I'm speculating) ..it clearly said that he had been in shock and had said 'whatever' ...about our culture. Whether there was internal off field stuff, footy related, coaching, positions, tatics etc., I have no idea, but it did not telegraph respect, work, hunger...

We were really messed up..who knows why. I also saw Ross going through the motions at times, on the field, and he is the opposite of Hill I would say. Both pros, but Ross is more a percentage tennis man who reads the play and plays by the numbers.

So from these opposite ends of the spectrum, and the appalling losses, sketchy fitness..it seems to me we were a broken group. Coaching? Dunno? We came good after the bye.

Now I thought we would lose most of our games in the first part of the season, but I didn't see that happening.

I suspect Hill and Sincs can play wing, especially Hill. And I do think HInd was a significant loss and a failure by us not to recognize his potential as a rebounder. Remember we were better with Coffield and Paton in '20.

HIghmore and Sharman are two blessings from '21. not much else.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

I think you are 100% right on Hill's lack of hunger. I believe he was personally satisfied with where his career was at, he had tasted sucess at Hawthon and is earning huge money at the Saints. Basically he didnt think he needed to do the hard yards any longer to prove himself. But then the internal pressure came, when he was nearly dropped and the media criticism ramped up. He then realised he needed to start applying himself more to his game. We are all hoping that attitude is brought into next season and beyond, because be can be a very damaging player.

I hope that Ratts & his line coach show him what an influence Langdon had with his running at Melbourne and inspire him to return to those levels!

I dont buy into your culture sentiment however, I believe last season was just a dip in our progression to becoming a top 4 side for a long time. The club & culture are as well run and coached as they have ever been in their history.
