Re: Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent re-signed.
Seemed to be a fairly safe bet that both would stay on once Clavarino and Lonie were cut and given the lack talent acquired over the trade period.
Seems likely that Hunter will stay too at this point.
The club has made very good in roads over 2 years of turning over players that couldn’t or wouldn’t contribute in any meaningful way with another 7-8 or so being shown the door this off-season.
Too big an ask IMO to get rid of anymore without bringing in players to replace them.
All 3 IMO are firmly outside the top 22 and if they play more than a 1/2 dozen games each, will be a sign that we’re really struggling again.
Only Kent seems to have a pedigree that suggests he can have the odd good game but… as has been evidenced as ad nauseam, he’s not allowed to be let off to run free… he doesn’t have any weapons.
All three along with Hannebery would be the odds on players to cut right off the bat next year barring some miraculous improvement

Comparing Dunstan 2021 output to Kent 2021 output? It is a strange and cruel world. Not to knock Kent, and i throw away my broken record here..I promise. So Kenty, onwards and upwards!

Must have been fighting the opposition back with a stick to get this deal done. Hunter is a league above and will be a much better player next year if his head stays on.

Re: Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent re-signed.
The way the club expresses it makes you laugh.
"Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent have recommitted to the Saints"
I think it more accurate to say "the Saints have reluctantly recommitted to Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent but only for one more year"

Both showed enough promise for another year on the list. Can't get rid of too many at once.

Joyce hasn't done much wrong and deserves more time.
Kent would not be on any other list, even GC's.. Bit of a worry.

Re: Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent re-signed.
True re Kent but there are only so many players you can turn over each season. I expect the club will be looking at players like Peris and Kyle as prospective replacements.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Thu 21 Oct 2021 7:01pm Joyce hasn't done much wrong and deserves more time.

Re: Darragh Joyce and Dean Kent re-signed.
Agree. Don't mind him. Fair size on him, 195cm and 95kg. Plus he isn't slow. Could be handy if he develops into a genuine key defender. We need another one to partner Dougal Howard imoWaltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Thu 21 Oct 2021 7:01pm Joyce hasn't done much wrong and deserves more time.

Club couldn't find anyone to trade into the club.
They had no choice- just making up the numbers

Makes sense. One year contract for not much plus we delisted /retired a lot of players this year and will realistically only get three is the draft so we need players. These guys are average at best but they both fill holes and sometimes play better than expected

I think Joyce might be solid as a defender…so far he does remind me of Hymie but he may be told to remain like that like a role player. I suppose Kent is extremely lucky.

Terrible in the air
Bad decision making under pressure
Doesn’t get much ball
Have scrutinised a couple of his matches this year and he’s close to the most consistently beaten, ineffective players I reckon I’ve ever seen. Most people remember that one play in his second game this year when he ran at a loose ball in a contest and cleared it at a pivotal point on the game. Best as I can tell, that one, fairly simply play has earned his this reputation as a tough composed defender when in fact his mandate is to avoid being the man that goes up in contests and he’s a clanger merchant if he tries to pass more than 20m.
What’s the quality/ies that I’m missing here?

Ask the club, they must see something you've so far missed, or, there's just not much out there so better to keep what you've got.skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 23 Oct 2021 11:23pmDon’t for the life of me get what people see in Joyce.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 23 Oct 2021 4:47pmDJ Higgins wrote: ↑Fri 22 Oct 2021 3:03pm Makes sense. The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Big strong body & not the worst but will struggle to be on the list next year if he doesn't find an extra gear IMOskeptic wrote: ↑Sat 23 Oct 2021 11:23pmDon’t for the life of me get what people see in Joyce.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 23 Oct 2021 4:47pmDJ Higgins wrote: ↑Fri 22 Oct 2021 3:03pm Makes sense.
