Kent isn't too bad, and his footskills are good, and that rates highly with Ratts.

I think Hunter is breathing better with the failure of the Xerri trade.
He is almost certain to get a one yer extension.
Kent & Joyce will remain nervous until the telephone call comes.

I still don't know why Geary got a contract instead of an assistant coach position...can't fit him into the first 30.
Kent finished the year well and the first time we have seen him get a fair run without injury.
Kicking for goal let's him down but pretty decent depth player.

Got too many depth players. Long, McKenzie, Wood and Hannebery for example. Would be happy to delist Kent and fill the spot with a development player.

I’m not really a fan but there’s only so many players you can cut in one off-season

We’ve made a huge dent into moving on players that either can’t get on the park or can’t produce when they do…
Hunter, Joyce and Kent need to be moved on still but will pbly survive the role of the dice… but to be honest, I’d have preferred to keep Dunstan over any of them even if it’s not apples to apples

Of that list, Kent’s the only one that’s demonstrated any ability to hold a spot in the top 22 so he pbly stays… the other 2 are a ruck that can’t tap and a defender that can’t spoil from behind. Both wasted spots on the list

Predictions based on very little science:

I suspect Hunter will be much improved after his baptism of fire this year, a pre season with the club, new fitness man and time with Paddy mentoring. There were small signs towards the end of last year and the fact that we held firm on Xerri's price gives me straws to cling to.

Joyce is unlucky our last line defence is so settled at the moment. If we let him go I am pretty confident another club would snap him up. I also suspect Ratts and Enright will spend a fair amount of time thinking about where else Darragh can sensibly be played. Being a hopeless punter I would consider him for a wing. Big, fast, can mark and cause opposition to be bruised. Perhaps he could become Brad's minder on the field. Have often wondered if his accent means team mates have no idea what he is saying.

Kent will finish up being thought of as a far better player than Jack Lonie. If that's not already the clear case as Jack fades into history.

I think we have chopped most of the tres ordinaire whipping boy stock about now.

Hunter is an interesting one mostly to my eye he looked like a clumbsy and uncoordinated giraffe, however there was one game, (I can't remember which one), where he showed a glimpse of something. Gee what a bonus if he is kept on the list and comes from nowhere to offer something, wouldn't have to be a star and if he was to at least be a serviceable backup in the event Paddy or RoMa can't get out on the field then that would be a massive leg up.

This is the type of luck we are going to need for the next 2 or 3 years while we navigate our short term list issues.

I tend to agree that Joyce is safe… short of them having recruited a defender for depth, one of Clav or Joyce was always going to survive.
Personally am disappointed to have lost Clav who to me is clearly a better choice.

What concerns me about Joyce is the way he plays.

If you watch him closely, he actually appears to have been instructed to play off the contest.
When the ball is kicked deep, he tends to stick to the side or move around to fill a gap/collect a spill… and on a lot of occasions, when he actually is in prime spot, the other defenders like Webster move into the contest and he slips out.

I suspect this is because his one to one contest work is actually really not good. His opponents tend to outmanoeuvre him or beat him on the lead quite easily… don’t believe me, watch his contests closely.

The club seems to go out of its way to ensure that he’s not exposed in the contest and the burden of the aerial defensive work goes to others.

One can also see challenges when he gets the ball under pressure… is really prone to the helicopter kick turnover instead of composing himself and working through the pressure.

All in all, the issue to me is that he has very very marked limitations that are unlikely to improve and I find it concerning that the club as adopted a model to work around them.

If I was an opposition coach… I would absolutely try to move the ball through his opponent and exploit that match up.
I reckon a kid like Cooper Sharman would absolutely touch him up
