I think it was a trend at the time. Trade out players with some value and invest in youth. I was livid. I thought it was the bandwagon kind of thinking. Losing Dal, Big Boy and even Stanley..big losses. Just look at the value they have given other clubs at our expense. And to think Joey might have been on the butcher's bench as well!

THink of the players we have nearly lost over the years. Lowie almost went to Fremantle in their early days. Roo almost went to Collingwood...Eddie was working on it.
Who else? I can't think of many. We seem to have a Balance of Trade problem.

Not sure of your age but when I was a young kid we traded Russell Greene, Sold Perovic, let Dean Rice walk to Carlton ( all premiership players ) and Joel Smith to Hawthorn, and Adrian Fletcher to Brisbane. Guerra to Hawthorn was another - all of which we got nothing or very little in return.
Then add McEvoy to the premiership players list

Fair to say we have let a few go for nothing or very little who still had plenty to offer. One thing to be poached or traded for value (?)

This. Stupid decisions aren’t a new thing with this club. I remember all those player going to other clubs and just couldn’t believe it Those players mentioned by older saint were “ a”grade.

Honestly, I don’t remember

I didn’t love seeing Goddard go but there was an argument to be made about salary and turning the list over

3-4 years on the list, McEvoy was getting towelled up and outmuscled by developing rucks in their first year. Thought that trade was pretty decent but again we squandered the picks. Hawks new right off the bat that the way to play McEvoy was to protect him in the centre and utilise his strengths (contested marking) to give them an advantage around the ground, especially down back.
Whilst the trade stung and looks worse now... we don’t employ those types of strategies at this club... there’s some weird inflexibility culture that has existed for years (at least since RL) where we persevere with something once our minds are made after how consistently it is proven to be a bad strategy.
My point here is that had McEvoy stayed... he would have had a mediocre career IMO, and would be be a whipping boy for sure. All our fault.

Didn’t want Stanley to go... thought that would bite us and whilst we squandered the pick and failed to recruit a decent ruck til Marshall came along, personally don’t think Stanley’s gotten that much better since he left. Certainly not a revelation

I think I was receptive to the approach initially but by the mid 2010s I learnt my lesson. You may or may not remember I was a very vocal critic of how we persevered with Jones, Gilbert, Ray, Gwilt etc when they were well and truly on the decline and not playing well.

The lesson was that instead of cutting the few players of elite standard, leadership and experience that were on bigger money, we needed to keep them to mould the next generation whilst moving on the 6-8 list cloggers that played 3-4 years longer than they should have.

None of it really fit that well to me.

Back then Seaford was state of the art compared to the dump they left behind at Moorabbin.

I understand it was too far away from coffee shops, it's what you get with no money.

It was only a training ground which some still have trouble grasping.

Really good little place called Custodian Kitchen on the corner of the shops right next to the tafe

Always packed. Lot of good food too. I see the Saints there fairly regularly. Ross and Butler seem to like the spot.
