Tony Elshaug and Ameet Bains - COME ON DOWN !!
Oh wait, they are no longer with us. How convenient for them!
Can only hope the current recruiting knows what they are doing. The two kids they are apparently looking at in the upcoming draft sound like real prospects. Owens has a bit of Petracca about him by the looks of it. Here’s to hoping!

Even Paddy "might" have been a star of he'd had better luck. It's tough.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 11 Oct 2021 1:33am Any of these guys, if picked by another club with more money for development, how would they have fared?
Apart from Paddy, they may well have become elite.
Is it our system?
Who knows?
We have % drafted poorly. Not sure I'd rubbish Billings, Coffield and Clark. They've got issues but I reckon they're all damn decent.
Billings has had plenty of interest and if he wasn't hurt in 2021 he would've had a seriously great year.
Clarke & Coffield were down on 2020 stats and pizzazz but they're going to both be value to hang onto. That's a fact

No one said they’re not AFL standard. The point of my post is that they are all too 10 draft picks with multiple years in the AFL. None are top 50 in the league let alone top 10 at our club. In my view at least 2 have to become, Dalsanto, Hayes, Goddardesque if we are to seriously challenge for a flag. ATM Billings is carving out a solid career, Clark (e) is showing potential but the clock is ticking and Coffield has been disappointing relative to his early draft puckSAINT-LEE wrote: ↑Mon 11 Oct 2021 10:19pmEven Paddy "might" have been a star of he'd had better luck. Re: Saints are poor at drafting
Coffield was 5th in the B and F last year wasn't he? Was in the top few intercept marks in the AFL in 2020 hardly dissapointing.Moods wrote: ↑Tue 12 Oct 2021 2:40pmNo one said they’re not AFL standard. Re: Saints are poor at drafting
One season doesn’t maketh a career Curly. I agree he was good last year, but poor this year. We need these early draft picks to be great. They all should be consistently top 5 ( especially Billings)
I sincerely hope I’m wrong and Clark and Coffield smash it next year

That is true but he was basically elite at his role in 2020.Moods wrote: ↑Tue 12 Oct 2021 4:49pm One season doesn’t maketh a career Curly. I agree he was good last year, but poor this year. We need these early draft picks to be great. They all should be consistently top 5 ( especially Billings)

Re: Saints are poor at drafting
Elite would have put him in AA contention
He was not
He had a great 2020 but was average in 21

Given his numbers in key areas he had to be damn close.

Re: Saints are poor at drafting
Coffield started to come good towards the end of the season. Who would know what his issue was and why a player loses performance like he did but I think he has the potential to be a bigger star than Hunter Clark.

Re: Saints are poor at drafting
I felt like they tried to play him a bit differently early to mid 2021.
Went taller, more aerial work and contested grabs etc
Looked like they were trying to put him in the role that Highmore flourished in.
IMO, Coffield is way way more suited to a medium sized running, playmaker type role where his contested marks are more an added feature to his game then a relied upon strength.
He’s not the Brett Voss/Ralph Clarke, third tall up, take grabs and secondary role of as a playmaker type. It’s the other way round.
Let the kid run, use his speed, get a bit of uncontested ball and do a bit of shut down work type.
Coffield is one that really needs to both get fitter but not put on too much muscle
