Who can do the maths on which pick we would need to receive from Essendon to ensure we got our NGAs
Lets assume we use pick 9 (which will become pick 11) on a young gun.
Lets assume another club picks Windhager at 26. We will need 532 points to counteroffer. Our pick 46 is worth 331 points and our pick 64 is worth 101 points = 432 . We are 100 points short.
Lets assume another club picks Owens at 40. We need 232 points and we have nothing.
100 + 232 = 332.
332 is about pick 34.
So we need pick 34 from Essendon on these assumptions. Or we pull forward our next year draft selections.
I think this is correct.
So we could potentially trade next year's second round pick if necessary? How do they attribute points to future picks? Is it based on your finishing position this year?
I think there is no need to trade, you are given a deficit amount of points this year if you don't have enough, which are deducted from your first pick next year. We don't want that.
While Owens and Windhager are drawing attention, there are a few others too.
We are either splitting pick 9, trading a contracted player or pretty sure Seb has an offer worth 2nd round compensation.
So you pick a player - Gresham - who has been unfortunate with injuries yet is a class above Long when fit and firing and can run through the midfield and is 3 times the forward than Long will ever be
You put up a good argument Devilhead and I concede because obviously you’ve named 30 players so your point about him ranking at number 30 must be true
Your exaggeration skills and hyperbole are 3 times the argument that I can muster

Seb Ross will not garner a second round compo
If he did, we’d prefer he left, and we’d take that pick
It’s more likely third round, which is not worth it
The odds of a third round pick giving as much to StK as Seb Ross over the next 3-4 years is not great
I agree. But Seb is a bigger chance of a second than Long, don't you think.
I still believe the best chance is Long to Richmond (where I believe he'd fit well) with 9 and 64 for 15, 28 and 44. This places Long at 35, Richmond advance 6 spots in the first round and we fill our development spots, with maybe 1 ready to go recruit.

If another club had a spot and bit of spare cash, why would they trade a pick? What does Seb get? Less money?
Pay Seb a bit more and keep your pick, Saints get a compo. End of second 2nd round.
That will get us over the line with the NGA Iif in the worst case, one gets bid on between 25 and 30 and the second before 45.
I would keep Ben long and play him on the wing and leave him there for a few weeks to settle. With his pace and attack on the ball with jones,Gresham’s,hill/McKenzie on other wing very
If we have to trade someone how about coffield we have highmore to cove his spot.
That is if we get a fit healthy squad I hope new fitness guy is ok he was at GWS and didn’t they have a big injury list!
The drug cheats have f*** all to offer the saints for Long anyway.
From the age.com.au
"Former Crow Jake Kelly is expected to join the Bombers when free agency begins while, as it stands, they have picks 11, 48 and 54 in the national draft."
No one is rushing to offer Seb a better deal than St Kilda, it appears. If the contract we have in front of him doesn't equal a worthwhile compo pick should another club
match it, we have little to gain.
Long may get a 3rd.
Battle may get a 3rd.
Coffield may get a 2nd.
We certainly need some more picks to secure the NGAs. I don't want us dipping our hands into 2022's picks.
I'd like to know if it was true Coffield's Manager was testing the waters.
Agree about the confidence, I think he puts too much pressure on himself. He should lock down a HBF spot & strive to be in the Leadership group. Oddly, for someone who appears to lack confidence, he has no issue expressing himself to team mates.
Coffield would be a waste of top 10 pick if we accepted a second round pick . Had a break out season 2020 after a slowish start to his career but he was ordinary in 2021 IMO . I haven't given up on him just yet but needs to get back to that 2020 form or else it will be another wasted pick.
would be disappointing to see Coffield go. He can be much better with confidence.
Long doesnt get the ball enough. The tribunal doesnt like him so he is only a couple of strikes away from getting "The Baker Curse" (eg a massive suspension for a minor wrongdoing)
Might get a third round trade for Long, maybe ...
might also need the points for academy kids post selection 20 , so might be worth it to get the points and not have to eat in to 2022 draft points .

So are we cutting our losses with Long?
Pick 25 in 2016
Now we are accepting 48 or 54 for points for a speculative NGA 18yo
Drafted too high by all , except our, ratings.
60 games in 5 seasons. Best year was as a defender but got found out there at time and passed by this year that was forced to return as a forward.
IF can get a third take it if not weigh up who provides more Long / Lonie / Kent and cut the others. Probably if that is the case I keep Long but cant see him in best 28
