Probably Lonie. I would cut both from the list and give a couple of kids an opportunity.

Re: Lonie
I would have thought he was depth at St Kilda. 87 games at AFL level hardly makes him a failure and he has courage in spades.Zed wrote: ↑Fri 10 Sep 2021 11:33pm A good player trapped in a 14 year old boys body.
Will be depth at whatever AFL club he finds himself at.
I hope he gets another contract somewhere as has brought a smile to my face from time to time.
Could earn himself some good pocket money playing in the country.
I'd hate to see the 14 year old boys you are referring too. Got a problem with shorter statured players it seems. Let us know how Caleb Daniel goes tonight.
If what you say is what you believe St Kilda made one of the worst recruitment decisions ever when they took a little bloke from Essendon. Stephen Milne.
And nobody could expect us to be so lucky to ever recruit another one like him.

Re: Lonie
I think Lonie has played better AFL footy
But I would delist Lonie and keep Long for 1 more year (or trade for a similarly talented player)
He might come good?!
Been tried forward - average
Been tried back - average
Tried as a defensive forward - average
He can’t nail a spot - disappointingly

Re: Lonie
Don’t think he is a confidence player but his kicking can be sublime and abysmal in turns…
If he’s kicking rubbish, don’t want him in the team.
More value than Long or Kent IMO
But I think Long has more trade value, so we could play the. …eh em..long game with him and trade up in a years time if nothing better shows up.
Both have better trade value than Kent.

Re: Lonie
I don’t think Jack Lonie has any trade value.
If he gets a second chance (which I doubt) it will be as a delisted FA
Most likely at Sandy or in the MPNFL next season, where he will dominate!!!
Bonbeach could get him to add to Armitage, Gilbert and Dennis Lane.

Re: Lonie
Long might net you a third rounder?
I would love a player swap for Long
I know Lipinski has nominated Collingwood, but I’d still have a decent crack at him
My additions would be (controversially)
Mabior Chol from Richmond
Patrick Lipinski for Long (see if the dogs would do it?)
Quinton Narkle for Battle (reckon Geelong would jump at that!)
Talia as a delisted FA on a two year deal with a trigger for a 3rd
Hannebery to spread his money over two seasons or halve his salary with a view to him becoming an assistant coach in 2023.
Outs would be controversial also
Dunstan delisted to GC no compo
Ross FA (3rd round pick compensation)
Billings FA (2nd round pick Compo)
Giving us
Picks 11, 22, 40, 46 in the draft.
I believe we also have 2 academy kids to look at?!
And BTW
I would have delisted Geary!
Bit drastic but after this season, I’d make some changes!!!

Re: Lonie
Lonie was fortunate to get a contract for this season. The only thing that will save him again is if Gaggs & Libatore cant find a replacement. I dont think Isaiah Kyle (NGA) is draftable, unless they can get him as a Cat B rookie.

Agree with the INS totally and what I am hoping for but I know we shall be disappointed.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 11 Sep 2021 6:56pm Long might net you a third rounder?

Only out should be Dunstan but if we lose Ross to free agency then 3rd round sounds about right. Billings to stay.

Re: Lonie
Hard to answer Lonie has never really owned a spot nor has Long. Lonie has a few years grace on Long & IMO Long is more versatile can lay a tackle ,can take a grab ,good leg speed can go forward or back & Lonie doesn't or can't . Another season to see if he can go to another level .Lonie had plenty of chances & if Long doesn't take his probably Lonie but both will go down as wasted picks if Long doesn't grab the chance

Re: Lonie
Lonie was pick 41 in the draft
Before that selection your told you’d get 87 games 75 goals
Would you consider it a waste of a pick?
BTW
Long averages 2 tackles per game
Lonie averages 2.5 tackles per game

Re: Lonie
Lonie would be one of the more courageous players I’ve seen - courage is what I consider toughness
Not dealing out Illegal bumps. Long is more aggressive though.
I think nearly all league footballers are tough
Who is the better player?
Long is a better player
Lonie is the better forward pocket

Re: Lonie
41 or 23 is irrelevant IMO on this topic the question was who has had the best career so far

Re: Lonie
I answered the Lonie vs Long question
Someone suggested Lonie was a wasted pick… not sure he was?!
I pointed out that
He’s a third rounder and has had an OK career for a pick 41. I would say the average career for a pick 40+ would be under 50 games.

Lonie is probably a better forward pocket but he can't play anywhere else that's the differenceB.M wrote: ↑Sat 11 Sep 2021 7:50pm Lonie would be one of the more courageous players I’ve seen - courage is what I consider toughness

Re: Lonie
Yep they don't call it starvation corner for no reason very hard position to play & you have to be pretty bloody handy at AFL level to make it & Jack was handy but IMO never had the tools to be a walk up starter . At pick 41 I suppose you could call it a decent career but didn't kick enough goals & struggled to have any impact when we needed it

Linking Long & Lonie reminds me of those pub names with unrelated pairings e.g. Frog & Radiator; Goat & Tricycle. Maybe Wildthing & Rightlegless?

Re: Lonie
If Lonie remains on our list, we’re going nowhere.
We can’t keep hanging onto mediocre players, they made the hard call with Dunstan at the beginning of the year but that was too late we could’ve got a year of development into a kid.

Re: Lonie
I don’t think anyone is suggesting Lonie is going to stay on the list
I am just giving my opinion that he is not as bad as supporters make out. He has had an ok career and if he kicked straight it would’ve been a good career and would continue.
Fact is though, he’s missed too many chances (47%) and forward pockets don’t get that many.
Can’t see him getting contracted anywhere else
He will either play State League footy and be a 40 goal forward pocket
Or be a midfielder at club footy level and be on $1000 per game and dominate

He doesn't fit the structure of the team.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Lonie
Lonie's big weakness is that he just isn't strong enough physically, but he has a good crack at the contest. Bigger and faster backs can break his tackles pretty easy.
