non football acts
Once again the MRP finishes the year like it starts - useless.
Protect the head they say, but if you dont hurt the guy your fine. - Selwood a prime example.
Then charge the guy who was going the ball because the impact lead to a broken Jaw.
And of course you can punch anyone you want in the body and just get a fine. Cotchin could have bought a new house with all his fines, Sheed just got $3000 for a full on stomach punch .
I believe any non football act , such as a punch, kick, elbow should be an automatic week and then build from there if injured.
If it occurs in a football motion then is a football act.
Fines do nothing.

TBF - Sheed used an open hand - LOL [indicative of pre-meditation]

Re: non football acts
I like the idea of a "non-football act". A lot of commentators talk as if a punch in the stomach that the umpire doesn't see IS a football act because "this isn't netball", "it was a love-tap", etc. But we do all know what a football act is.

Re: non football acts
Hawkins act was dangerous. Why is it ok to pin someone and drag them down with all your body weight where in most instances they will slam their head on the turf? You get some knobs calling it a 'football action' but surely we've moved beyond the good old days of 'football actions' that cause serious injury and head trauma haven't we!?!
Whether it is perceived as a football action or not, we can't allow players to willfully and dangerously cause concussion to others without any penalty. If players are skillful enough to play the game at the highest level then they are skillful enough to exercise a duty of care and roll a player ( cause your own head to hit the turf and cushion the fall for your victim you assshole!) or release the tackler so that a player can at least break the fall with his own hands.
Remember when Butler was paid a free when he tackled a player but at the last second he released his grip? If you tackle and the ball is dislodged or released without a clear handball, then it's usually paid a free, so Hawkins did not have to drive Joyce's head into the turf ...did he?
Hawkins used his excessive strength to pin a player and Joyce was concussed (and played no further part in our game). The same action by a different player was deemed to be a dangerous tackle (even though the guy getting tackled played on) and they found the perpetrator worthy of a $2000 fine for a dangerous tackle. Makes no sense that Hawkins walks free and is allowed to cause concussion.
Every time Hawkins throws back handers or elbows or every time he uses his significant and substantial weight and his whole body to tackle someone with a much lighter frame, then he needs to suffer the consequences. This was not an accident. He is a thug and he can't keep getting away with it when people are suffering concussion.
The AFL need to get serious about changing behaviours otherwise we'll have 50-100 players being diagnosed with CTE each year when they're in their 40's or early 50's
The AFL and their clubs will be subject to 100's of millions of dollars in lawsuits if they don't get their act together. Start now you dickheads!!

Re: non football acts
I may be mis-remembering, however, I am sure that it was Hawkins who was involved in a front on collision with Steele(?) where he stops going to ball and braces for front on - but looks to line Steele up with an upper arm to the headScollop wrote: ↑Tue 17 Aug 2021 5:21am Hawkins act was dangerous. Re: non football acts
Inconsistent rulings by the Match Review Officer (ex Collingwood player and media commentator Michael Christian) suggests to me that it is high time that the AFL replaced him with an ex-player with legal qualifications, someone who you'd hope would approach on-field contraventions with an acute awareness of the importance of consistent judgments.
Former Hawthorn key forward Nick Holland (179 games) has had considerable experience in sports administration after he completed his law studies and looks to me like a very good choice.

Re: non football acts
It’s not hard.
Do we want to see a a kid in under 14’s chase down his opponent and grab him around the middle (pinning his arms) with the momentum of both players thrusting them forward and the kid getting tackled suffering severe head trauma?
The kid doing the tackling knows what’s coming and will be bracing himself as he lunges with his body weight thrusting his opponents head into the ground. Is that what we want to teach kids? Is that the art of playing AFL is it?
How about we teach them that doing that is not a skill we want kids practicing. We want them to make sure if they tackle that they understand that it’s not necessary to injure your opponent.
The AFL wants to grow the game and the message they are sending with the Tom Hawkins MRO decision is that it’s ok for your daughter to suffer severe head trauma in a tackle, because it’s a ‘football act’
f*** Off AFL

Re: non football acts
The issue is and always has been the AFL superseding their agenda into the proceedings whilst playing the integrity up
The infamous Barry Hall/Matt Maguire incident in 2005 is the most obvious example of a time they blatantly ignored the rules because they wanted a marquee player to play in the biggest game of all.
To a degree, I get the logic but don’t be corrupt and then try to sell it to me as though it’s ethically sound. The fact that he was ‘cleared’ to play to me is the biggest insult/slap in the face of all time
If they turned around and instead said we grade that you’d miss a week but we want you to play in the GF, if you play the suspension is 18 games next season rubbed out hence it really stings
Not saying I like this but heck at least it’s honest as opposed to the unprovoked punch was ‘in play’ and not serious enough to warrant a week.
There are protected players, players that are the target of campaigns to be driven out, clubs that are favoured etc
The complete lack of integrity in the game makes it borderline unwatchable

Re: non football acts
Hypocrites
As you suggest skeptic, they’re just as likely to suspend a player for doing exactly what Hawkins did, but Hawkins is a chance to win the Coleman…there’s bums on seats and extra interest from the viewing audience if he plays this week
The AFL are corrupt

Re: non football acts
Why should a stomach punch be allowed? At all??
Regardless of how hard it is, it’s not necessary.
Was Barry Hall on Marty Maguire a love tap??
Stamp it out!!!
Anyone does it
A week
With force 2 weeks
Causes injury 4 weeks
Unnecessary act
