Buddy spanked
I thought Wilkie's game on Buddy where he really towelled him up. deserved its own thread.
Not only did he restrict the so called superstar to four touches, the has-been (too early to call ? ) only had two shots at goal, both from dubious freekicks, for a 1.1.7 result.
Pity the maggots hold Buddy in such high esteem, as it seems in their eyes, he can do no wrong.
Pull jumpers, wrap his arm around a players neck (twice), and the only one likely to get a free kick is Buddy.
Wilkie's effort last night was extraordinary, out of the box, and one of the best performances from a Saints fullback since Spud hung up his boots.
Well done son. You are a champion of the game, in my eyes at least.

I haven’t seen Buddy so badly beaten against the Saints since the days of Zac Dawson.

Buddy is one of the most penalised players in the AFL.

Re: Buddy spanked
Max was a dud. He couldn't take a contested mark. His average over his career was 0.44 per game and much worse when he first started. Callum Wilkie's average is 0.8 - nearly twice as good. He's also a better kick. Max was great a punching the ball away, even against much taller opponents in a standing contest and against fast players on the lead. But that was the extent of his game. He was a slow one sided kick and an average handballer. At some stage - especially in crucial moments in crucial games - a backman must take a contested mark. We didn't have anyone in 1997, 2009 or 2010. Fortunately, we had someone in 1966.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 09 Aug 2021 7:15pm I asked Grant Thomaa on twitter if Wilkie is the new Maxy Hudghton

Re: Buddy spanked
Wilkie was brilliant, but isn’t he every week? Hasn’t missed a game since he started and hasn’t played a bad one. I don’t think he gets anywhere near enough credit from non Saints fans.

Zac was a very good full back who smashed Buddy in Tassie in 2009.

Should have played on the 2nd or 3rd best forward but almost always got the best forward & almost always got the job done.

Well, he knocked someone's tooth out. I started this thread in recognition of a fine young footballer. Not to discuss some never was.

Rode him to lethargy.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Buddy spanked
Max was a dud? Nope. He was an excellent full back in an era of gun forwards kicking lots of goals - Dunstall, Tredrea, Pavlich, Brown, Hall, Lloyd. I recall around the time of Dunstall’s retirement him saying that Max was the toughest full back he played against. He was known amongst forwards as “The Glove” because he played so close. He may not have been much of a contested mark, but his closing speed on the ball and ability to get his fist onto it was exceptional. And he was tough. Loved him.perfectionist wrote: ↑Mon 09 Aug 2021 8:01pmMax was a dud. He couldn't take a contested mark. His average over his career was 0.44 per game and much worse when he first started. Re: Buddy spanked
Max Hudghton most certainly was not a dud perfectionist, this is an example of the revisionist culture that pervades today's society! I very much doubt that you'll find a single Saints supporter from that era that will agree with you....st.byron wrote: ↑Tue 10 Aug 2021 10:06amMax was a dud? Nope. Max played 234 games for the Saints and regularly beat opposition full forwards more often than not much taller than his 191 cm. He deservedly became a cult hero because he literally bled for the club and to denigrate him 12 years later indicates a total ignorance of his outstanding service to our club.
Many commentators and most supporters could not believe RL left Max out of the 2009 GF team - his experience and work rate alone would have made such a big difference against Hawkins and Mooney, a decision that is the reason for my heartfelt belief that RL failed the team when they had to jump the final hurdles for their 2nd and 3rd premierships.

All Australian full back who was one of the most fierce competitors I've seen, beloved by team mate and opponent and a saint all the way down to the bone.perfectionist wrote: ↑Mon 09 Aug 2021 8:01pmMax was a dud. Unbelievable statement.
