Re: Tony 74 please read
One thing I’ve noticed is that the players look up at the goal posts
I never even looked at the goal posts when kicking at goal. Looking at two objects IMO makes it hard for the brain to figure out where to actually aim
Same with golf. I never just aim down the middle of the fairway, I stand behind the ball and pick an actual point.
I always look at a target beyond the goals and kicked to that
As far as technique goes
I try to be as natural as possible
So I don’t think about that
I just worry about where I’m kicking
I like to only give my mind one focus

When I was kicking for goal, I looked at a point 10 metres in front of me, because I knew that that was where the kick was more than likely going to land. Mind you, I think I only did it once.

I don’t care what they do, as long as they have a routine that is consistent, reliable and repeatable that is effective.
No one would say Josh Kennedy had a traditional routine, but he made it work for him.

I always looked at the back shed when I used to line up
My sister on the mark, dog barking but I remained focused and never missed from 5-10m out.
I coulda been a contender......

Yep, I’ve read it and if I had the answer I’d be earning a lot more than I currently do. We may be in Perth for a fortnight, WC then Freo. Maybe

I’m extremely jealous watching Harry McKay nailing set shots from everywhere.

I think they are trying that though it doesn’t look like it’s working.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 18 Jul 2021 1:47pm One thing I’ve noticed is that the players look up at the goal posts

Re: Tony 74 please read
Take dead aim is probably the best swing thought for golf. You need to be able to see the target in your mind’s eye. That being said, ignore swing mechanics and fundamentals - grip, posture, alignment and so on - at your own peril.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 18 Jul 2021 1:47pm One thing I’ve noticed is that the players look up at the goal posts

Surely none of our players would be just kicking towards the sticks.....every one/team knows to pick out something to aim at

Re: Tony 74 please read
All of those things
Grip, posture, aim happen before the swing - in the set up.
I find if I focus on my swing in a game, it’s a disaster… I do that at the range.
Same with batting in cricket - clear mind and watch the ball - that’s about all I do… again, in the nets is where I tinker
Sometimes, the more you think, the more you struggle
These players have been kicking a footy since they were 5
And most do it pretty well
Only difference is, with a set shot, you have time to think about a negative outcome

Re: Tony 74 please read
Thanks for the response Tony
As someone else responded above maybe they spin the ball to settle the nerves. - I don’t mind that - spin it a few times if it relaxes you - then get down to business- get the ball right , line up the goals and then start your walk/run in to kick
Someone says the coaches like to say they trust the players - I would think the coaches should trust themselves to coach and in turn get the players trust that they are being coached well - give them a routine
As another poster says it looks like the guys aren’t that confident at kicking the goal - it looks like they are thinking too much about being relaxed and almost hoping they get this one right - a set routine that they believe in will surely get better results

Re: Tony 74 please read
Yep you are going about it the right way. Set up largely determines the motion and you certainly don’t want too many mechanical thoughts during a round. You just need the right habits - routine, set up etc - ingrained. If you don’t work on them you will not improve. I would suggest that the same applies to goslkickingB.M wrote: ↑Sun 18 Jul 2021 7:47pm All of those things

Re: Tony 74 please read
I am adding my voice to the frustration of watching players spinning the ball as they take their shot.
I cannot see that it possibly helps and only makes the task harder.
Accurate goal kicking can be taught.
Stewie Loewe was perhaps the most erratic and poorest kick for goal in the competition.
He worked on his technique and with help became one of the most reliable and accurate goalkickers.

Leowe's Goal kicking routine:
X - Kicker
x - Mark on Ground
k - kick
o - Man on Mark
G - Goal
X ---------x----k-----o------------------------------->G
Went from putrid to a thing of beauty
Start doing this and the 30 seconds is useful for setting up your routine and removing the time period for doubt.

Re: Tony 74 please read
If you are spinning, twirling the ball as you walk in that is another unnecessary thing on your mind getting the ball in a comfortable position rather than being fully focussed on the shot at goal.

Kent? A right foot?
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Re: Tony 74 please read
Doesn’t suit some players, that robotic approach
Some players are natural kicks of the footy and they just flow through the ball with ease
Others are a lot more mechanical and rigid
Depends on the individual
Can’t all use the Tony Lockett method or any method that is too unnatural because under pressure you’ll just revert.
Takes about 10 000 hors to master a skill
Not a training session
Players need to find what works for them, with their natural technique (unless it’s horribly wrong and they can’t kick at all - like Loewe - but that’s rare at that level)
Eg
Buddy has his technique
Josh Kennedy his
Jack Riewoldt his (very good kicking action)
Tom Hawkins swings it right to left
Again,
Best golf coaches don’t try and get you to swing like Adam Scott
They look at your swing, make a couple of minor basic modifications to help you start hitting it straighter with more consistency.
The more advanced you become, the more technical they can get.
