Re: Chris Riewoldt
More great decisions
2006 was probably the beginning of the end for John Beveridge.
Armitage and Howard
Armo at #9
James Frawley #12
Jack Riewoldt #13
Howard at #27
Played 2 average games in 4 years

Re: Chris Riewoldt
Yep flabbergasted by what was said in that article about why they didn't recruit him. Shouldn't it be the best available?
Oh yeah we had plenty of good forwards...Yada Yada Yada.
Beveridge made a few blunders. Picked the obvious ones.
St Kilda recruiter John Beveridge declined to comment, but sources at the club said Jack hadn't shown enough to be a top-10 pick.
"We had Nick and Kosi (Justin Koschitzke) up and running and the key positions were strong. The focus was the midfield," he said.
"Certainly he (Jack) was looked at. Some people thought he was a fraction slow. It is a rare bloke who can take the contested marks he can, but back then it didn't appear he had that life in his legs."

Re: Chris Riewoldt
I remember in 2006 the recruiters were gaga over the 6’5” athlete in Tasmanian Mitch Thorpe.
When asked about who the best prospect in his team Tasmanian U18 coach Hamish Olgivie was unequivocal
Jack Riewoldt
Arguable the best player from the 06 draft and we had every chance to select him.

Re: Chris Riewoldt
Which is why when people say you don’t need Ben King....we got Max and Membrey yada yada yada.....
Sometimes you just “do” and get the talent especially IF there is an inkling that talent would love to be at your club
Jack would’ve loved to play with Nick......can you imagine a roaming CHF beast in N Riewoldt with jumping Jack out of the goalsquare?????? Good luck stopping that...
Ben King lead up far and wide the other night .......looked very good too no reason why he and his brother can’t compliment each other and scare opposition sides for a decade .....

Re: Chris Riewoldt
can't play 10 forwards no matter how good they are
Also these forwards were draft before him
Thorpe
Gumbleton
Reid
Reid was ok the rest useless

Re: Chris Riewoldt
We had Roo, Kosi and Gehrig, with Watts coming through.
Love the hindsight we look a lot less silly in that draft than three other forwards taken before him

Re: Chris Riewoldt
It was a case of people making mountains of molehills… See Aaron Naughton. And Naughton was playing defence with bad kicking stats.

In 2005 Riewoldt made his senior debut with Clarence at age 16, then went on to play with the club through its finals series including a losing grand final where he kicked four goals.[5] The following year he again played in a senior grand final with Clarence, this time a member of the club's victorious side.[6][7]
He later played and trained with the Tassie Mariners at TAC Cup level and represented his state at the 2006 AFL Under 18 Championships.[8] In three matches at the championships he kicked a total of eight goals and was named in his side's best players on two occasions.[9][10][11]
In 2006 he played eight matches for the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL. One particularly noteworthy game came against Bendigo, where he kicked four goals and took 13 marks.[12]
He attended high school at St Virgil's and Rosny College in Hobart.[3][13]
Prior to the draft, AFL Media's Matt Burgen labelled him a "goal-kicking forward who is extremely strong overhead."[12] He was however considered both short and slow for his position, with North Melbourne recruiting manager Neville Stibbard later remarking that he did not believe Riewoldt was "athletic or tall enough to play key position at either end (of the field)."[14] Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson later recalled Riewoldt's impressive football smarts and his ability to read the flight of the ball as key factors in his recruitment.[5]

Re: Chris Riewoldt
Yep, more a case of being risk averse to recruiting family lineage by then. Agree, it should always be best available when it comes to drafting.axcellence wrote: ↑Wed 14 Jul 2021 6:47am It was a case of people making mountains of molehills… See Aaron Naughton. Re: Chris Riewoldt
Picks 2, 3, 4 and 6 were all average players but apparently we were the only ones who got it wrong.

Re: Chris Riewoldt
Isn't it best player available. Makes sense doesn't it. If he comes into the club and displaces another player from his position you take it!

Re: Chris Riewoldt
No
A lot of teams got it wrong
Of which we were one
Jack did a work experience fortnight at StK, and he was Nicks cousin
And he, like Selwood was just a good footballer - there were better athletes
But what f*** does that matter
Just take the best players - is it that fkn hard?!
Hell, I would’ve recruited him just to get Nick to sign a contract extension.

I totally agree get Ben if we can and they will make it work. Opposition sides will have to pick a different side to play us and that will weaken them before a ball is even bounced.

I think from memory Nick stayed on for a few years anyway.
