Just looking at the AFL site regarding Lance Franklin approaching 1000 goal . Tony locket kicked bags of 10 goals 22 times 16 of those at the Saints .1360 goals in total at an average of almost 5 goals a game he was a freak & yeah it so true there is only "One Tony Lockett"

When you picture healthy plugger these days you can't help wonder that maybe if he ate a few less dim sims when he was playing for us he might have missed fewer games when he was at his peak.
And of course if this had happened the goal kicking record would be 1500+ .
Nothing better than being at Moorabbin when plugger played . Even when we were getting beaten you always knew plugger could kick 4 or 5 in a quarter.

Perhaps I'm biased but I've always considered Locket to be the best of all time, well best since I've watched since the 1960's

Leigh Matthews, Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett are in most conversations, I reckon Matthews was the pick of this lot, but well behind Plugger in my opinion.

Except that those guys, and Franklin, played in great sides. For the most part Lockett played in sides which struggled - and when they didn't struggle, it was mainly due to his efforts.

I agree with you about Matthews though - he is the best player I have every seen. But Lockett is the second best I have ever seen.

Matthew’s was a great player but was a thug. He would not play many games in today’s world. Plugger was totally awesome and could win games of his own boot. But for me it was Ian Stewart. He could do it all and has 3 Brownlow’s to prove it.

You want to rate Plugger think of 2 games-
1989 Vic game alongside Dunstall
1995 Vic game alongside Ablett Snr
Both times he was the star that day he made the others look almost like a sidekick.
He needed half the chances they did to score goals.
No one could have just 8/9 chances and kick 5/6 goals like Plugger.
If he played his absolute peak in the finals regularly we would not be having these conversations about anyone else.
He is the simple the greatest most awesome phenomenon I have ever seen.

If not for a flawed finals system and a thug named Ablett, Plugger may well have dragged us into a Grand Final in 1991.

Once kicked 10.7 ( out of 13.18) on ( apparently ) the full back of the century. Lockett had one free that day and eight against him. Knowing Silvagni’s scragging tactics, if that game was umpired under today’s rules Plugger would have got the frees and kicked 20+ goals that day.

Dusty is a freak. There have been other freaks, of which Lockett is one.

Dusty, great player and one of the very few who should be mentioned even in the same breath as Lockett (along with Matthews and probably Ablett Snr and Carey).

But give me Plugger every time. Pound for pound stronger and more skilled than any of the above.

A complete colossus of a footballer and I agree with the poster who said in this thread that most of the football public didn’t see him at his peak. We were among the privileged who did.
