Bont had 40 and kicked 10 goals in a school game
He was a speculative top 10 pick for nearly all clubs
Yes it was an APS game where 80% of the Victorian draft recruits come from. The recruiters watch as much of the school footy as they do NAB and state games these days.
No ..... Bont went to Marcellin who are not in the APS system
Either way school footy is still a lower level than TAC or whatever its called these days

Spencer White kicked 10 in a school game playing in the ruck
True Marcellin are AGVS, but still very different scenarios. Bontempelli was the School Captain and showed leadership and quality throughout.
White didnt play for the state side and was a 2nd round speculative pick.
Either way Billings is a good player, just not a great player. It would be nice for us to select the true great players at least once again in my life time. The last one was Riewoldt...

What really irritates me is that they get gun shy with picking family of past players just because 1 or 2 haven't worked out (like the Winmar kid)
If we were consistent, we would have drafted Jack Riewoldt, Marcus Bontempelli, Quentin Narkle and more recently we would have picked up Jacob Koschitzke
…And…if you have a policy of picking family of players and if we did have Jack Roo in the squad, we wouldn’t have gone looking for a KPF and just gone for best available in 2014 and we’d have the Tractor instead of the Diabetic

Robinson is a fool. Because of him I don’t watch 360. He creams his pants too much over Clarko, Fages, Dimmer. He’s the ultimate tosser.
That's the reason.I call him FF. (Fat f***).
He is just a drunk.
That's it.
How he got his gigs is beyond me, he knows less.about footy then most of my footy following mates.

I disagree. I've grown to respect his opinions and I reckon he has changed with regard to issues beyond just week to week footy. He is one of the few journos that has been consistent over the last few years on his outlook around head high contact and the 'bump'
He understands Aussie Rules absolute importance in peoples lives . I don't agree with everything he says but in regard to the game itself and picking teams in good form, I also think he's one of the better judges. He won't always declare his real views on tips because I think there's a conflict of interest with their main sponsors (the betting usually determines which way most of the 'experts' tip Imo)
He makes a few out there calls because that's the nature of the business he's in. They have to spark interest and get people reading and clicking the headlines. I have grown to enjoy listening to his passionate animated opinions on AFL 360 and they come from bloke with a genuine love of the game
He's a bit one eyed when it comes to the Bombers too
Slight thread drift but I think letting Josh Bruce go may end up costing us a flag if we can't find a replacement during this year's trade period.
Max King desperately needs support from a key tall forward. Without it we have a major structural flaw that will not only keep us in the bottom 8, but it will also hamper Max's development.

Not true. Bont was a speculative top 18 pick for all clubs. Derek Hine who was Collingwood's recruiting boss said that the consensus view of his peers was that Bont was unlikely to go in the first round - until midway through his u/18 year - he was just a skinny rangy HBF. Then he had a massive growth spurt closer to the draft. Don't worry about EJ - the Dullbogs should have a statue of Simon Dalrymple at the Western Oval for making that call.
His attributes are so unusual - Leigh Matthews summed it up perfectly 'Bont is basically a key position size player with elite endurance AND a genuine midfielder's agility who can take a pack mark'.
Some players can do a couple of those things but very very few can do all. Fyfe & Goodes in their prime was pretty much the closest and Pav could've been if he'd played more as a mid.
Oh yeah - and McCartin over Petracca still makes me do some sick in my mouth
Haven’t read the article - sounds like a lazy bastard just doing the minimum to collect a pay check
I still remember exactly where I was standing when I heard confirmation of McCartin pick - virtually everyone in football knew that was a f#ck up except for 3-4 blokes at st Kilda - hindsight has proven those 3-4 blokes were indeed f#ckwits
I don’t know what the experts at the coal face of drafting thought at the time of Billings drafting- hindsight definitely tells there were better options
Same can be said re naughton although I still think there’s not quite enough water under the bridge to close the book on this one

What does AGVS stand for?
Is it Associated Grammar Schools Of Victoria ?
Maybe he made a typo with his acronym.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

From memory Armitage and Rioli were in different drafts
I think
Armitage was #9 2006
Frawley was #12 2006
Reiwoldt was #13 2006
McEvoy was #9 2007
Dangerfield was #10 2007
Rioli was #12 2007
We have many other Coodabeen stories, more than most clubs
in hindsight - the Armo before Riewoldt one is the one that's hurt the longest. But in '06, we had Kozi and Roo and a bloke called Jarryd Allen who'd shown a bit before his hip blew up. Roo Jr was less of a need.
Still - I do love reminding Pies fans that they drafted the great Richard Cole with the pick two before the one we used on Nicky Dal

Yes. Hindsight is a wonderful commodity. But the club can't use that as an excuse.
Petracca stuck out like the proverbial as number 1 pick.
It was rank stupidity that let him slip to Melbourne.
Similarly the Bont would have been on our radar but the club opted for the more flashy Billings. Naughton I am less certain.
We had bad recruiters. The only good to come from this. They no longer have a job at our footy club.
We have bad recruiters yet we made the finals last year and won one - both Melbourne & Bulldogs finished below us ...... remember that?
Would it have been been rank stupidity if Paddy was still playing kicking 3 to 5 a game?
Before his concussion issues he was tracking along the same lines as Hawkins & Josh Kennedy at the similar stage of their careers
Was it rank stupidity we choose Paddy after Petracca did his acl?
Seemed a pretty good decision we choose Paddy after Petracca did his knee
Thing is hindsight is about as useful as a dead elephant or a punch in the balls
Petracca could have gone to the Saints and then his whole life would have been different - good & bad
He might have done 2 knees or no knees
No one could foresee Paddys concussion issues
Personally i wanted Petracca at the time but for most clubs it was a 50/50 decision
Hindsight is the biggest bulls*** argument/discussion platform
Yes, it was rank stupidity to pick Paddy over Petracca.
2014 was THE defining draft of the rebuild. The draft they HAD to get right and...they gambled. You do not gamble a no. 1 pick, especially when blind Freddy could have told you who the best player in the draft was.
I'm still pssed with recruiting Howard 2nd round in talented draft year when we could have taken him 126th. That was about the dumbest choice ever - up there with Frost
