Re: Ratts on pathetic result
One more over 10 goal drubbing in the next few games might see Ratts out the door regardless of what's going on with the playing list.

Not a chance! Even if finishing bottom 4 wouldn’t warrant sacking the coach. Ratten hasn’t even coached us for 30 games.

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
If that was to occur it would cement us as the laughing stock of the AFL & put us back 10 years, to a point we'd not remain in existence.

No point sacking Ratten
Sack few players first
AFL footballers picking and choosing when to play is unforgivable

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
When we used to lose (with a crap list mind you)
It was the coaches fault!
When we lose now
It’s the players??
I know everyone is desperate for Ratts to be the panacea at StK
And I think he’s a good coach (well it seems so) but the fact is you need more than just a good coach to be successful

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
It's all chicken or the egg stuff isn't it?
We held Richo too long and yes his list was weaker but nothing really changed during his tenure. Not only did the list become stale, so did his words, apparently.
Ratten, into his 2nd year, with a clear recruiting drive for specific needs, was helped by a season long camp to allow the players and his plan to gel.
He can coach but there comes a time when overpaid recruits begin to outweigh the list / player development. We do have a better list, we expect better, we deserve better so Ratts needs to make an example of one or two high priced recruits otherwise his words will become just as stale.
Ratts is a keeper, for 5 years at least. Only my opinion though as while he's there we will attract a better list.

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
Ever notice how great coaches have incredibly talented playing lists? Coaching is overrated. Recruiting and list management is not.

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
Right now we're looking like a team top-heavy with ridiculously overpaid, unmotivated and/or broken down foreign legion players.
Slim pickings among the younger brigade and the Richo-era recruits are mainly GOPs or outright battlers.
This condemns us to another 3-4 years of frustration.
Given his cattle, Ratten is tracking as another Richo.

Fortunately we have Leon Cameron & the grain fed Giants to debunk that theory.

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
GWS made a Grand Final and got to two prelims
Couldn’t win it against highly credentialed teams
But got close, fair enough they didn’t win it, but they’re not easy to get... we should know!
If Leon Cameron is a dud coach, it proves you can get there on talent.
Coaches are important, just not as important as talent.
Right now, and for a few years now, a master coach is finding out what life is like without a team of stars!

For me... it takes more than a few bad losses from an injury riddled team to sack the coach that got us to a finals win in his first seasonB.M wrote: ↑Sat 17 Apr 2021 5:54pm When we used to lose (with a crap list mind you)

Agree with most above... we’d be a laughing if we sacked him now

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
But you'd have to say their list is better than ours, they have better draft picks and more genuine A grade players. They have better talent but are failing miserably, last year and now.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 17 Apr 2021 7:00pm GWS made a Grand Final and got to two prelims

It really is a genuine balancing act of the key pillars, Coaching, Recruiting, Development, Administration. Like an engine, if ones out it begins misfiring.

Any coach change talk after 1 season is just dumb.
Face facts the list carries too many workmanlike players - we lack genuine top end class
I thought we’d struggle with a tougher draw this year - would’ve been fascinated to see how we went against the big boys with a healthy team and 2 rucks but regardless we are in/out of games and the effort falls away that’s attitude and players not prepared to work hard defensively

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
It's concerning for me that when we have injuries to key players,
we turn to makeshift recycled players that were deemed unsuitable by other clubs.
Abbott from Geelong last yr.
Hunter and McKernan this year.
Top up guys that were seen as value by the brains trust.
Then we have other guys who we have developed, who haven't really been best 22.
Dunstan and McKenzie.
Dunny is sadly lacking in even VFL level kicking. I imagine he works his derriere off, and
he's rumoured to be the inside bull who used to absorb the hits to let Stuv etc get off the chain.
But he's not part of our future and needs to be sent back to SA.
DMack showed lovely signs against WCE, desperation, composure and desire.
But inconsistency raised its ugly head, in his case. Again.
Which is why he's played 53 games since his debut in 2015.
In and out of the side.

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
I don’t reckon anyone thinks Ratts should even have his position considered - we just made and won a final.
He is clearly a decent coach, no arguments their
Was perplexed by some things this season tactically, but there was surely some method behind what I considered madness?!
I just don’t think coaching is as big a deal as made out to be the AFL community. Players make coaches, not the other way around.
Put it this way
Would Ross Lyon been as successful at StK and Freo without Roo and Pav
I can tell you, both still would’ve been stars without Ross Lyon

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
Port, Hawks, Suns- we will probably lose all of those, cannot see us winning them. But losing margin under 5 goals in each case.
Then we play at Marvel a few times in succession, Cats, Bulldogs, Norf, and Sydney.
Cats could monster us by 10 goals, quite easily.
Our back 6 are not even VFL standard, and it will be like a horror movie.
Bulldogs should beat us by 6-7 goals.
Norf, we could even lose to them.
Swans- there's the second 10 goal loss, right there.
Crows at Cazaly Stadium, then Tigers at MCG. Tigers by 14 goals.
We've won 2 games so far, and I can't see where we can win another 2 games this year, to match our 2018 performance (not counting the draw in that year)

Re: Ratts on pathetic result
A coach needs to constantly refine his (or her) gameplan. Perhaps Ratten needs to experiment with his tactics over the next month or so. From my observation on Thursday night Richmond have borrowed Rugby tactics when setting up in a congested contest. That is have two or three players in a contest but bring up your reinforcements for when the ball is released from that contest. They appeared to have a number of players ready to collect the ball from that contest. We failed to address this tactic and allowed Richmond easy clearances and therefore quick forward entries. Combine with a superior skill level and we were always under pressure after quarter time.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 18 Apr 2021 1:56am I don’t reckon anyone thinks Ratts should even have his position considered - we just made and won a final.

Will be tougher to make finals but we have wins in us
