23rd man selection
Who gets the 23rd man gig?
Does someone more versatile miss out on a game so we have a versatile sub? The selection questions are interesting.

Blake 8cres was a constant sub for us.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Ridiculous thing
Haven’t we been there before?

Re: 23rd man selection
Some talented older player who does not have the fitness to see out a full game would be ideal.
It was supposed to be a concussion sub.
But now the clowns have created a situation where the first guy to have a soft tissue injury that will keep him out the next week (12 days) will be substituted.
Then later in the game when someone gets concussed there is no concussion sub available.
Our game is run by imbeciles.

Re: 23rd man selection
One thing for sure, teams will exploit/rort the rule, particularly later in the season when planned rotations are in place. The irony will come when a faux replacement is made and then immediately there is a real serious injury.
Standard player contract proformae are probably being redrafted now as agents try to get their clients excluded from being a substitute.

Re: 23rd man selection
I think McKenzie's major weakness - i.e. his inability to hit a target by foot - makes him a weakness in the Ratten game plan which is about retaining possession and getting it moving forward quickly and then pressing up hard behind that forward movement. Turn it over anywhere behind centre and the plan falls apartImpatient Sainter wrote: ↑Thu 18 Mar 2021 1:01pm Bytel would be my choice, but McKenzie's versatility makes sense.

Re: 23rd man selection
I’d rather play a full game in the VFL than be a sub player for insurance against an injury.
Question
If you are named sub, but don’t actually play, does it get credited as a game?

Re: 23rd man selection
Has to be McKenzie, he is an unsub.
That makes him the player who would have had the most minimal impact if he spent the whole game on the ground.
Come to think of it maximising his turnovers would have maximum impact for the Giants!

Re: 23rd man selection
Apparently the sub can play in the VFL, even if he gets on in the seniors!
And yes you are credited with a game even if you don't get on.

Do you get full match payments if you are an unused sub ?
Do you get a premiership medallion despite not taking to the field ?

Re: 23rd man selection
ok not directly responding to you
but this general line of thinking
by imbeciles - if referring to coaches, players representatives, ex players, and medicos
then i spose yes - a collective of imbeciles
because the only rumbles of discontented whinging is coming from media and a handful of "fans"
havent heard any whinges for our coach or medical staff etc etc etc
I know these simple facts
Players of today run harder, run faster, run longer, hit harder, train harder and have to continually get up over a long period of the year
Players are going back to longer quarters and for a while now much of the intelligent discussion has been abou thaow they are playing fatigued giving rise to more injuries where that twinge develops into a full blown hamstring tear hey Mr D Hannebery.
I also know these simple truths
# it is only a rort or cheating if the rule only applies to one side - it does not
# team coaches and medicos will be reluctant to pull the on one of their first selection players if it means an automatic two week exclusion
# and if the rule can be improved - it will be
In the meantime anyone still thinking it will fundamentally change the game
Hands up all the old timers who can remember when there were:
# no reserves
# reserves but if you went off you could not come back on
# 2 reserves
# 3 subs
# 4 subs
....?

Re: 23rd man selection
What I haven’t seen any mention on here is that if a player is medically subbed off, they can’t play for 12 days after that.
It is also determined by the doctor, not the coach.
This is to stop the abuse of the system.
It isn’t to be used just to “have a rest”. It is for medium to long term injuries.

Re: 23rd man selection
true
it is basically a two week suspension from being selected again
there is an out clause if club medicos make a submission about recovery and the AFL then reviews and agrees
(braces for the barrage of favouritism and corruption claims)

Re: 23rd man selection
I think that the issue is "policy on the run" and creating an issue with a "fix".
The AFL years ago brought in a rule where you could play on immediately after a point if the goal umpire had signalled.
This led to Hawthorn expoiting the rule in the 2008 GF and Joel Bowden handballing behinds late in the game.
It also made for a faster game.
The rule commission instead of scrapping the rule doubled down and tried to slow the game down in other ways - see interchange cap.
Also, the same commission now deemed a deliberately rushed behind to be worthy of a free kick in front of goal ensuring the worst penalty imaginable for the most minor of infringements.
Too many times, the AFL have created a problem with a fix. And then more problems with more fixes.
The trouble is that AFL is still the best product going around. Nothing comes close to it.
It's like owning Coca-Cola. Unless you completely change the formula, you're going to be successful.
The AFL is a roaring success despite the administrations that try and "improve" it every season.

Re: 23rd man selection
ok so we could go on forever arguing the pros & cons of each individual rule if you want to
but the fast play on change after behind I see was brought about by coaches setting up the offensive 50 play - where it is the easiest tactic in the world to flood your forwardline with 18 players to lock the ball in your forward half after a point
But whatever - if you want to ignore longer quarters, decreased interchange, with increased injury risk to players then fine
Would people sleep more peacefully if it was just called 4 on the interchange bench??? you just have to designate one player couldnt come back on after while?
Or do you just want to go back to when there 18 players named and thats that
Me? Im just going to keep enjoying the spectacle of the best ball game on this planet
