Re: Marshall injury
Was he that effective as a forward?
How many goals did he kick whilst playing forward last season?
Not saying he ain’t a great player, he clearly is! And is a good forward/ruck purely because he has the ability to play ruck - very well which a lot of forwards can’t really do.
I’d have him as an 8/10 ruckman and 5/10 forward

Re: Marshall injury
for a ruck sized player its his ground work that would scare opposition coaches and players - you missed that bitB.M wrote: ↑Thu 18 Feb 2021 1:50pm Was he that effective as a forward?

Couple of things. Ryder, if fit, is first ruck. I think he proved that pretty conclusively last season.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 18 Feb 2021 1:50pm Was he that effective as a forward?

Second, Marshall's already a good forward and will get better. He needs a good player on him.
He's strong, smart and a booming kick for goal. If Marshall isn't forward we are asking a lot of Max King to be the sole true tall.

Come on down McKernan. Strong body needs to present and take pressure off King. Don't want to kill the kid.bigcarl wrote: ↑Thu 18 Feb 2021 6:44pmCouple of things. Ryder, if fit, is first ruck. Re: Marshall injury
They are saying there is no fracture. I'm guessing a they have done an MRI and can see degradation in the bone structure, which is a constant regenerative process anyway.
Rest, immobilisation, anti inflammatory drugs and aggressive hyperbaric oxygen treatment could turn this around in 3 or 4 weeks. He is a fit healthy young man and he should be able to loosen the foot up quickly. Im hoping they are not f****** around.

What was better
Ryder 2020 season in the ruck
Or
Marshall 2019 season in the ruck
Ryder 2020 season in the ruck
Or
Marshall 2019 season in the ruck

Re: Marshall injury
Ryder and Marshall combined, turned an average 11 point deficit in hit outs into a 1 point win. Marshall averaged 24 in 19 and Ryder 21 in 20. That a huge turnaround.
They also impacted on an average 2.4 point deficit in clearances to a .4 point win.
Ryder averaged 2.0 clearances in 2020 Marshall maintained 2.7 for both years.
Marshall's 2019 was outstanding in terms of possession and metres gained but much less efficient than Ryder's 2020 in pure ruckwork.
You could toss a coin. But Marshall with Ryder is a hands down winner.

Re: Marshall injury
Battle would provide more as a forward IMO. But we’d probably still need McKernan as a relief ruckman.Gershwin wrote: ↑Thu 18 Feb 2021 7:04pmCome on down McKernan. I can't stop thinking about Hird's troubles with foot fractures. Matt Egan isn't worth thinking about. Let's hope it stays as stress fractures/hotspots. He's the one player we can least afford to lose.

Re: Marshall injury
The audacious bid for little known Essendon big man Sam Draper know looks a brilliant ploy, however unsuccessful it turned out to be.
Draper looked like a real prospect in his few games last season and would fill the Marshall void this year and be a force in Tandem with Marshall for years to come.
We didn't land him but great foresight by the recruiters IMO as it raised a lot of eyebrows at the time.

Re: Marshall injury
Draper would have been nice
Too good to be at Sandy though, would he be ahead of Ryder?
Did we go after Draper before Ryder?

Re: Marshall injury
Marshall’s injury means Battle must now play as a key forward for a good month or so. It might work out well.

I reckon we're going to see a breakout year from Josh. He needs to be played forward all year. Reckon he may win a game or two of his own boot this year. Very Bullish.

Re: Marshall injury
Yes JB, very astute. I believe Draper was on the radar before Paddy. I'm hoping Paddy's legs hold up & he wants to play through 2022.
Outside the box is Carlisle. Whilst he allegedly has resisted playing forward in the past. It may be his awakening if Frawley is preferred in the back half. Add to that Highmore & Clavarino. A key forward spot may be Carlisle's position unless he really likes the Zebs colours.

Re: Marshall injury
Agree. It’s in Carlisle’s best interests to begin making himself more versatile. Always thought he could play ruck or forward if necessary, but he’s made it clear he wants to stay in his pet position of intercept defender. Might be time for a rethink on that JakeGhost Like wrote: ↑Tue 02 Mar 2021 9:55am Yes JB, very astute. I believe Draper was on the radar before Paddy. Re: Marshall injury
... or Wood ...
I think Battle will be used as a swing man off the bench to fill a hole where needed and/or pinch hit forward or back.
If Wood plays well against Carlscum on Thurs night then, I think that'll cement his place as a starting forward for R1

Do we really think Frawley is a better player than Jake??

Re: Marshall injury
Agreed. His 3rd q against the Tigers was pretty much the only time in that final we looked competitive. I have a feeling though that because he's showed that he's so versatile, he might get swung around (which I don't mind either - it's great to have a player that can be used to change it up).
