St Kilda unlikely to redraft Paddy McCartin but Sydney showing interest in the No.1 draft pick
Paddy McCartin believes he can make a successful return to the AFL. It likely won’t be at St Kilda but another club is considering throwing him a lifeline.

Patrick McCartin’s return to AFL football will not come at Moorabbin, as Sydney considers whether to take a risk on the No.1 overall selection.
McCartin would need to receive AFL medical clearance to return to football after a series of concussion that he admits turned his life upside down.
He has been training all season and is in career-best shape, with Swans football boss Charlie Gardiner saying Sydney was still considering whether he might fit their needs.
But despite St Kilda monitoring his situation, and McCartin spending plenty of time at the club early in the year, they are almost certain not to bring him back onto their list.

St Kilda’s decision is not based around his medical issues but rather shrinking list sizes and the number of development players they will carry on their list.
They will have about 32 established players on their list plus draftees and rookies so will need them to be ready to play in Round 1.
The Saints have also added ruck-forward Shaun McKernan to a list that also has key forwards Max King, Tim Membrey, swingman Josh Battle and a raft of mid-sizers that includes new recruit Jack Higgins.
Clubs can add players like McCartin in the next delisted free agent window, as a rookie on December or even if he trained with them as a supplemental selection from January onwards.
But while McCartin showed glimpses of the brilliant junior form that saw him taken at pick one by St Kilda, those concussions saw him leave the club in late 2019 to concentrate on his recovery.
Former AFL researcher Alan Pearce told the Herald Sun clubs would have to consider their duty of care to McCartin if they were to recruit him.
“Players like Shaun Smith have already told him he shouldn’t do it. I am sure John Barnes would be the same. Barnesy has only just turned 50 and he has said his quality of life isn’t great.
“That could be 25 years away for Paddy but it comes around quickly. There is the short-term pain in not playing but the long-term gain in your brain health.”
McCartin, the brother of Sydney swingman Tom McCartin, said in an emotional radio interview after he left St Kilda he was a “shell of the person” he had once been.
But after a panel of concussion experts gave him permission to return to training in February he has ramped up that program.
He said recently he believe he could make a successful return to AFL football despite the concussion history.
“I feel really fit. I feel motivated and I feel like I am going to be fine,“ McCartin said.
“It has not been one of those things where I think I have to do it, I really want to do it … and that is all off the back of the medical clearance that I was given about 10 months ago.”

Re: Saints unlikely to redraft Paddy
It will be grossly irresponsible of the AFL to give Paddy a medical clearance, i doubt he'll play AFL in 2021.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

The AFL will have to think long and hard before they expose themselves to litigation.
He got worse, pulled out of comp, then now wants to restart?
This beggars belief.

Sadly, the Corona thing will not help his cause.or any fringe player’s.
But if it is deemed irresponsible to pick him up, despite the enormous moral-boosting , virtuosity of the gesture in helping an unlucky lad get back on his horse, despite all he odds...Jason McCartney style (kind of) ...., what does that say about a player who cops a couple of knocks going forward.?...Is it a sign of the Black Death? Leper Colony stuff? Because that’s what Paddy looks like now...condemned to be a leper. Too perilous for him on the surface, too risky for the whole comp at a deeper level of fear.
Just how many knocks did Roo get in his career? Five or six? he might not be playing if he were 27/8 in 2020.

It wasn't the number of knocks that ended Paddy it was his head's reaction to those knocks.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Fri 27 Nov 2020 11:52pm Sadly, the Corona thing will not help his cause.or any fringe player’s.

Riewoldt recovered as per normal.
Paddy struggled to recover from each.
And needed a year out for the last.

Re: Saints unlikely to redraft Paddy
When does an individual begin to take responsibility for his own choices? I suggest Paddy should be responsible along with any medico that suggests he'll be fine without warning him of worst case.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Fri 27 Nov 2020 7:00pmThe AFL will have to think long and hard before they expose themselves to litigation.

The AFL are trying to do all they can to minimise the dangers. At the end of the day it is very much a contact sport with the chance of head knocks being extremely high.
Paddy should not play. He should be employed by the AFL to discuss the implications of concussion to juniors & AFL players. He should also be an ambassador for diabetes and professional sport.
Playing is more about ego than common sense in my opinion.

Someone would brush passed Paddy and he’d be out for weeks.
He couldn’t perform basic life tasks for months on end.
He’s not built to play football.

Yep, no comparison to Roo. He's eight seperate concussions in six years. There's something clinically amiss with that stat. The slightest knock and he was sidelined.The_Dud wrote: ↑Sat 28 Nov 2020 9:48amThe comparison is not even close.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Fri 27 Nov 2020 11:52pm Sadly, the Corona thing will not help his cause.or any fringe player’s.

Re: Saints unlikely to redraft Paddy
At the end of the day - exactly like it was with Dylan Roberton - it will be the insurance company(ies) who underwrites the AFL's career-ending injury payout scheme who decides whether Paddy will play again. Paddy, his new club, the AFL themselves even - might very well find a Doctor or a panel of Doctors and specialists who are prepared to give him their blessing as to whether he plays again.
But it'll count for absolutely nothing if the AFL's insurance underwriter refuses to underwrite that risk. Because, in the event that Paddy suffers another head-knock with serious or deadly consequences - that risk will then revert to the AFL and it's Commissioners personally.

I worked for Allianz Insurance for a few years in Workers' Comp.
There was one occupation that Allianz will never offer WComp Insurance- Shearers.
It's company policy- because of the high risk of back injuries.
Simple.

So it’s back to my other point then - Black Death. If you are caught by the media ‘not recovering quickly’ from a knock to the head you have the curse on you ...until you retire...if you still have a career.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Sat 28 Nov 2020 11:19amBingoSaintmatt wrote: ↑Sat 28 Nov 2020 11:03am At the end of the day - exactly like it was with Dylan Roberton - it will be the insurance company(ies) who underwrites the AFL's career-ending injury payout scheme who decides whether Paddy will play again. He copped a bad one against Adelaide one day, and in a game against the Tigers he went off early but came back late and dominated.

One of his last against Collingwood late in career...
Interestingly, in the story in ESPN, he said they told him he was at no greater risk than prior if he continued playing.

Former players are remembering being concussed more times than they previously remembered.
Soon they will claim to have been concussed while being concussed.
You got to prepare the grounds for those insurance claims.

(Edit...i have since googled it)
Speaking on Fox Footy, Catherine said in 2015 against Crows, Nick got knocked out.
Club doctors rang her n asked her to grab the next plane to Adelaide.
Their son was just a few mths old, she had to leave him in Melb.
At the hospital, Nick had to be told that his sister had passed a few mths earlier, and telling him that n seeing his despair was gut-wrenching.
She told him to 'retire tomorrow, no questions'.
Lost that argument though
