Pinned to the Mark
Radical change to man on the mark.
He can't move sideways until the umpire calls play on.
Lots of 50 metre penalties I think.
No swapping the man on the mark.
Ban on shepherding the man on the mark.
I like this rule.
It was ridiculous that the team in possession could stand behind the man on the mark and then shepherd while the guy with the ball could run off.

Re: Pinned to the Mark
I like the ban on shepherding the man on the mark. I wonder if they’ll reverse the free or just reset
It’s going to take some time before players get used to not moving sideways when manning the mark.
I like the fact that there’s some leeway with ‘moving sideways’ and they’ve allowed for a 1 metre tolerance.
That’ll probably be open to interpretation when we’re playing West Coast over in Perth and the Weegirls players will be allowed to stretch that to 3 metres.
Also, there’s always confusion when an umpire yells ‘move it on’ and some players don’t hear properly (especially with large crowds again soon) and they think the ump said ‘play on’. There really is no need for an umpire to tell a player to move it on. What next? Do they tell them where to kick it or tell them to tuck their jumper in? The easy way to eliminate confusion is to instruct the umpires to ONLY call ‘play on’ and nothing else
What does the rule book say with regard to time allowed as far as marking the footy or getting a free kick? How much time do you have before the ump must call play on? It seems inconsistent and at times the umpires call play on too quickly and before a player has even moved sideways or off the mark

Re: Pinned to the Mark
yeah it will be lethal the first 6 or so rounds on the sidewards movement
then it will relax a bit - but hopefully players will catch on
but thats being very generous
I like the fact its black n white - dont move
The usual anti-umpire gang would howl at inconsistencies regarding creeping or over the mark rulings

This is going to drive supporters to drink & more pressure on umpires ,some will be called at crucial moments & some won't just leave the f------g rules alone too many changes for change sake

Re: Pinned to the Mark
Thank goodness they have finally addressed the man on the mark problem. Tackling (not just shepherding) the man on the mark was a blight on the game.

Hopefully our boys take note of the new rules, or some heads are going to explode on here if even one 50m penalty is paid!

Re: Pinned to the Mark
The only rule "on the mark" I would like to see would be the umpire having to physically place the Saints player on the actual mark rather than them standing a metre or two behind the mark and then watching the ball drop a metre over the goal line.

Re: Pinned to the Mark
The thing that s***s me is a player takes a mark in the forward pocket and walks back to take his shot but creeps in 3-4 mt to improve his angle and the umpires just push them back in line.
I know time on has been called but I think if they move too far off their line like a designated distance say 2mt it should be play on.
I like the no blocking the man on mark but the side way rule for the man on the mark sounds like a similar disaster to the interference rule where players run into the protected zone. Sometimes it's called, other times its ignored which can be frustrating.

Do you reckon the umps gather at a pub before each season for a "What have they done to us now?" beer.

Shepherding the man on the mark was, IMHO, introduced by Malthouse at the Pies. Always seemed like cheating to me.

Re: Pinned to the Mark
It is also time wasting if the mark gets reset when the team with the ball put on the shepherd to the man on the mark. They reset the mark but don't reset the clock.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Thu 19 Nov 2020 3:15am Shepherding the man on the mark was, IMHO, introduced by Malthouse at the Pies. Why are you claiming you called "move it ON" when you should have only called "move IT."

Re: Pinned to the Mark
Set shot for goal.
player on the mark will not be able to retreat from the mark and then run at the mark as the kicker moves in.
What happens if no one takes up the mark instead waiting behind the mark where they can move laterally.

Re: Pinned to the Mark
Unfortunately, this is like an avalanche. Once they began to change rules, playing numbers, reserve to interchange to unlimited interchanges they began a bastardisation of the game that they have no idea how to stop.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Wed 18 Nov 2020 6:58pm This is going to drive supporters to drink & more pressure on umpires ,some will be called at crucial moments & some won't just leave the f------g rules alone too many changes for change sake
A lot seem to have been knee jerk and no one has the where with all to say, this has not worked as we expected it, let's scrap it. Instead they add another, then another.
They have turned a great game into a soul less knock off of other sports. If it was a dog, it would be known as a Bitza.

Re: Pinned to the Mark
Anything that promotes 50m penalties in response to fairly inconsequential actions or innocuous moments gets a big thumbs down from me
Makes the game so much less enjoyable that a mark in the centre becomes a certain goal because someone was too close to the kicker as they ran by

Re: Pinned to the Mark
So when the player plays on but the ump has not called it you just let him run around you. This is a bad rule and should be an interpretation like the game is not over until the ump blows his whistle but really its when the siren goes not when the ump blows his whistle. Many marks are after the siren but not after the whistle signifying the end of the gamesunsaint wrote: ↑Wed 18 Nov 2020 6:33pm yeah it will be lethal the first 6 or so rounds on the sidewards movement

Re: Pinned to the Mark
Will make it all the more important to have defensive speed in transition, hopefully our recruiters have pulled the right strings. Teams like Geelong who crib on the mark both sideways and forward will find it tough.
