Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
I think Ed had lots of upside, but like a lot of players who can't cement a senior spot, I think inconsistency is a factor, and in the last half of the season, we had a lot of players drifting out of the game at crucial times. We need players who can get more of the ball during a game, use it well, and do it consistently, and that's the difference between ordinary and good players.

If Gags had been at the club at the time, I wonder if he'd have offered DMack a one-yr just like Lonie, or delisted him.
I cannot see any upside in DMack.
He's someone who should be at Suns or the Blues, bottom sides

I would guess the mistake was Gags and Satan were still learning the gig and it was a rookie error

Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
I think your comment " Doubt if he's on a big pay packet.." is why it could very well make sense to delist him and pay him for 2 years - get someone else on the listSanctorum wrote: ↑Tue 17 Nov 2020 3:35pm As with all these decisions, we have to rely on the coaches and list managers to decide what is best for the club, and as much as we may have liked what few games we saw Ed Phillips play this year, they are in a far better position to make these judgments than armchair critics.
Yes he could be rookied in the event that he is not picked up by another club, time will tell....
And yes, times like this we can shake our heads and wonder why Daniel McKenzie was given another 3 years in 2019, but it would not make sense to delist him if he is still entitled to be paid to end 2022. Doubt if he's on a big pay packet....

Can’t see this decision coming back to bite us.
Great runner, good work ethic, average player.
Better than McKenzie and others but guess it comes down to who is not contracted.
Doubt Phillips was best 26 let alone best 22 in 21.

LOL so true re the chaos kick into the forward line!takeaway wrote: ↑Tue 17 Nov 2020 3:59pmI think you are right Curly. Phillips ball skills are terrible.
Phillips is putrid by hand and foot. McKenzie at least can play in multiple positions has pace and his good overhead.
DMac is certainly capable of some clangers, and that is what supporters seem to remember, plus the day he was beaten by Cameron, which has happened to plenty of defenders. His disposal efficiency is the second highest at the club for those who average over 10 disposals, behind Wilkie. So not often straight back to the opposition. Top 10 in the B & F with only 13 games. He may yet surprise some supporters, I hope he gets a good go at it. Was emergency quite often in 2020. Has better stats than Long, who really needs to settle down a bit to avoid suspensions. DMac is facing an uphill battle, but is quite capable of replacing Long for instance. Anyway, when Geary goes, we will need someone to execute the dangerous chaos kick into our fast forward line - DMac.
its time to make a name for yourself like you've never made before!

The delistings to come will almost certainly be uncontracted players where McKenzie and Kent should have been amongst the first out the door. They next to go will probably be Marsh and Lonie and I hope they use the rookie list for younger recruits not proven fringe players

Geez, I hope you’re right about Lonie and Marsh being next.

Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
I guess at the end of the day all of Kent, Marsh, Lonie, Phillips, Joyce, and Dmac will follow Phillips, Parker, Austin and Hind out the door.
Personally... it’s irritating to me in terms of order because I hate losing unproven potential over established list cloggers to be blunt but at the end of the day it’s just re-arranging the order isn’t it?
All of those guys aren’t going to be part of the bigger picture if we’re going to push deep into September.
Might be one or two exceptions but all of them have their work cut out now

Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
Very unlucky for Phillips. In any other year he'd be kept on as handy depth but he's one of the unlucky few to be without a contract at the wrong time. Clearly more deserving of a list spot than McKenzie or Joyce.
With that said, he's definitely not in our top 25 and I don't see this coming back to bite us. He's a great runner and accumulator but his disposal is very ordinary

It'll be interesting to see if the Hawks take a punt on Mr Ed.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

McKenzie is better than Phillips.
Phillips is too tentative and fumbly.
McKenzie is a courageous player and has a go. I’m not saying he’s great but he’s not that bad either.

I haven’t been the biggest DMac fan, but, let’s give him a break. Another big pre-season, and coming toward his peak age, he might be something yet. When I look at someone like McIntosh from Richmond, wow, not that skilled but an honest hard worker and now has a couple of medallions around his neck. If Paton gets injured, we’ll need DMac. Let’s get behind him.

Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
I think on Dmac...
The issue with him is disposal.
More and more we’re waking up to the fact that it’s actually quite hard to not only get and keep the ball but also set up a good play.
You simply can’t afford to turn the ball easily in the modern game.
That’s been the Achilles Heel for guys like Dmac, Dunstan, Savage, Webster perhaps etc that all looked to be top 22 players a few years ago.
Certainly... when it comes to attributes Dmac is as tough and brave as they come, can run all day, isn’t slow and has a decent leap.
There is definitely a lot to work with there
Comparing him to the other players competing with him for a HBF spot... Coffield, Clark, Paton, Long - it’s more about how safe you feel with the ball in his hands

Re: Official - Ed Phillips not offered a contract for 2021
TBH, DMac won me in his first game when he stood his ground to courageously mark with players coming down on him. He's quick but what I feel he began to do too much was fall over at crucial moments. Disposal can be improved but he must keep his feet to be able to impact and use his pace.
Let's face it, poor disposal has never stopped a career of a St Kilda footballer. In fact you may even be made Captain or win a couple of B&Fs.

the match-up on Cameron in 2019 was the biggest potential career killer since they put a young Tom Lynch on Fletcher back in 2011.
