Apparently they and the coaches who are around Geary all the time have no idea about his leadership.

Steele may not even want to do it. I just hope it’s not forced on him.

Re: GEARS SIGNS ON FOR 2021
Personally I think he's just about cooked, but have no issue with him staying on.
Let's say Geary is captain next year and he falls away to where he is not best 22 and struggling.
One thing I'd bet about Geary is if he was dropped he'd cop it on the chin and continue the same positive upbeat persona around the club and the reserves (whatever the VFL comp looks like next year) if picked or not.
Appointing Geary captain is a safe bet as he's a tough resilient man who you could drop if necessary as he will always put the team first.

It didn't go too well for GWS this year when they did, copped it from everywhere.

Re: GEARS SIGNS ON FOR 2021
If he hands over the captaincy and is genuinely only picked on form
I think it's ok.
He may play alot of VFL, like Nathan Brown this year would have, but you have an onfield coach developing the young players.
But if he is keeping players out than it's a mistake.
And clubs make mistakes. Very avoidable ones.
Naive to think that teams don't have blind spots.

Well said . I don't have an issue with the club resigning him but as you have pointed out needs to be selected on form not on his reputationfugazi wrote: ↑Mon 28 Sep 2020 4:15pm If he hands over the captaincy and is genuinely only picked on form

Great news. Saints need senior leadership. Gears provides it. Doesn't mean he has to captain or play every game next year.

Re: GEARS SIGNS ON FOR 2021
Gears has been a loyal servant who still has a role to play. He is a role model with his courage and his hardness at the football. He may have some negatives, but so do a lot of footballers. Even the Riewoldts, Toby Greenes and the Jeremy Camerons and the Coniglios of this world. No one is perfect and there are many gop’s who are required in a team.
Josh Battle was given a vote by one of the coaches for his job on Nick Haynes. I noticed that Battle only had a handful of stats but it was seen by many as a huge win against the 2020 All Australian. Credit where it is due. Gears has proven over the years that he defends well and that he can lock down on some of the key playmakers. He has been good again this year. He doesn’t get the kudos that he deserves because that’s seen as the norm for him and the expectation is that he puts his body on the line and attacks each contest in the usual ferocious Geary style.
Steele may have been already anointed by some within the club and I think Ratts and others understand that you have to continuously transition and elevate your players to become leaders. Some outsiders including guys in the media that might get the inside word from the Saints footy department like Nick Riewoldt have endorsed the change. I’d like to see Gears hand it over and declare that he is stepping down to assist the new captain, whoever the club decide to appoint.

Re: GEARS SIGNS ON FOR 2021
Normally, I would imagine that a player like Gears would step down from the Captain role for his last year. However, if he is borderline pickable now, makes you wonder what odds he would have of being picked next year. And to have the ex-Captain the reserves half the year might not be a good look.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Any of the negative crap we see here about Gears is just talking for the sake of it and demonstrates just how nasty some supporters are and how psychotic people such as the aptly named 'Dud' is. Everyone knows the in's and out's of the situation and it's good to see our Captain get another year to round off many years of service to our club and a chance to hand over the reins in an appropriate time frame and dignified manner.

Re: GEARS SIGNS ON FOR 2021
I am definitely not a fan of this either. I am tempted to go on a rant but what good will it do? It is what it is. I just hope he is not captain. The time has come to re-introduce the rotating captaincy IMHO but with a bit of a twist. Vote a captain in for the first 6 games, another captain for the second block of 6 games and then another captain for the third block of 6 games. After round 18 the players should vote an outright captain for the remainder of the season (including finals), and the 2 guys that miss out become co-vice captains.
Side note - Geary is no longer best 22.
