Why does Ratts have this obsession to play (sometimes) 3 specialist small forwards?
I don't understand this. At the end of the day, specialist small forwards is just another way of saying they don't have the tank to play midfield. IMHO, you can play 2 of these types but not 3. eg. Butler and Lonie are our 2 best specialist small forwards. Kent has continually failed all season in the third role. Why not just play Bytel in that spot? I'm sure he will be more effective than Kent and Hind, and the added bonus is he can play midfield minutes as well. To me it's a no brainer and fits in with the narrative of being more flexible rather than having one dimensional players.

Re: Why does Ratts have this obsession to play (sometimes) 3 specialist small forwards?
Rattern prefers the team structure with 3 smalls since a lot of our gameplan revolves around quick ball movement and getting crumbers to the feet of King, Marshall, and Membery. Whenever we have looked good this year our small forwards have looked dangerous.
I don't think you understand how difficult the small forward role is. I very much doubt Bytel could fill that role as easily as you think.
It's a specialist role so maybe we need to recruit another good quality small forward

Maybe we should recruit another specialist. But why play 3 if one of them is useless. You may as well play Bytel instead and that way he can be more versatile and play midfield minutes. Which is the point I am trying to make.Viscount Jeremiah wrote: ↑Tue 22 Sep 2020 3:58pm Rattern prefers the team structure with 3 smalls since a lot of our gameplan revolves around quick ball movement and getting crumbers to the feet of King, Marshall, and Membery. Some Pelican thinks it's because he's pigheaded.

Jade Gresham would fill that mid-forward role. Unfortunately he is unavailable.

Remember Ryan Byrne's first game? I suspect Jack Bytel would be able to fulfil the small forward's role just as effectively (i.e. barely at all). Small forward is basically a lot of unrewarded running up to the wings and back only to then tackle, corral and smother etc ... all designed to keep the ball inside 50 for repeated attempts at goal. Sometimes - it's also about hitting the scoreboard.Viscount Jeremiah wrote: ↑Tue 22 Sep 2020 3:58pm Rattern prefers the team structure with 3 smalls since a lot of our gameplan revolves around quick ball movement and getting crumbers to the feet of King, Marshall, and Membery. I get why ppl don't like/rate Kent - but he's much different to watch live and busts his butt when out there.

I don't love Kent, but gee he's solid (his build, I mean). I would think that alone makes him favourite over the likes of Bytel, especially come finals. Don't know about Dunstan - but him not having played all season makes his selection very unlikely - unless we go deep and someone gets hurt!
