Love the Gears. Will go down as a club legend. The bloke would eat concrete slabs for his footy club and fans.
Want to watch the most boring and devious thing on television and probably in mankind's history, then tune into a daily live press conference at 11am.

Fine career.
Another warrior that led the club through a really lean period.
He should be celebrated.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Absolutely.
At this point of his career he is on the fringe of the B22, but that should not discount what he has done in the past.

A great battler and clubman - but one of the least skilled players ever to get to 200 games.

Wow like a broken record you put your thoughts on Geary every week
No wonder your comments are so “valued” on this forum

If we ever want to win our second premiership we need to avoid making these kind of players our Captain.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Captain Courageous but, for mine, not a shade on a real hard times legend like Barker. 200 games is quite an accomplishment for Geary, Does he have another year left?
Surely we get a new captain next year and Geary can just focus on his skills.

I don't think that anyone would ever question Jarryn's courage, commitment or loyalty & the fact he has given his all for the St.Kilda Football Cub & he should be lauded for that but time waits for no man & his time is nigh IMO

Bit late to focus on his skills. Probably 20 years too late.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Yep, a player who got the most from his abilities. A trait recognised at the time and rewarded through circumstance. Is he genuinely best 22 in September 2020, no. Any club that rewards a best 22 position to a player like Geary is not strong enough to win a flag in 2020.

One of the first games he played - us v Port in 2009, Won a kick in the forward line just before half time - an shanked it. A great heart and soul player for the club, and if he gets squeezed out from the best 22 next year, so be it. Every Premiership team needs one of the likes of him (just not 4 or 5). Hope he goes on next year.

Love it oboe, very romantic. Sadly romanticism doesn't win flags, otherwise we'd have more than one. I think he's been squeezed from best 22 in 2020.oboe wrote: ↑Sat 05 Sep 2020 11:12pm One of the first games he played - us v Port in 2009, Won a kick in the forward line just before half time - an shanked it. Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Ghost Like - there was a player that got squeezed from Melbourne in 2010. James McDonald was his name. After four rubbish seasons, they were building OK, Then they retired McDonald prematurely. It ruined Melbourne for a good six to seven years, because not every ting is on field. I tend to agree with you, but a 200 gamer (no matter how bad) needs to be dealt with fairly, and honourably. Build up culture, the rest will sure to follow.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
oboe - do you really believe our treatment of Geary is anything like McDonald's? Do you think McDonald was the reason for those 4 rubbish seasons or he not being there was the reason for the next 4 rubbish seasons.
That is a nothing argument. You should have gone with Maxwell from Collingwood, unfortunately we are not quite as successful.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
I do. 8.5 wins in 2010, same again in 2011. After beating Port in Round 17 (and in 9th,) lost to Hawthorn by 9 goals, and then lost to Geelong the following week by 186 points. A side doesn't lose by that margin on the verge of the eight without some underlying reason. They got rid of one of their favourite sons at the beginning of 2011, and it eventually tore the heart out of the club.
Geary won't be around next year - unless it's playing at Sandy - he knows that. You and I both know that. But if you treat a player that has played 200 games like s*** - well, you'll never grow a good culture at a club.

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Appreciate all that. Two different horses, two different stables. Melbourne were (& still are) a basket case. McDonald, a scapegoat. Nothing like Geary. The fact Geary is captain is the reason he's still in our 22. No club worth their salt would continue with that premise. He's just holding on!

Re: No. 14. What you see is what you get.
Some posters on here understand how a club works, some don't.
Gears took over the Captaincy at a very challenging time, the list condition barely had options for AFL capable players let alone leaders.
We were deep in transition, and arguably still are, Gears has held himself with absolute class and has honored the role as a privilege.
Like our former head coach, he has contributed immensely to the foundation we currently enjoy and he will leave a legacy that can be built upon.
