Brad v Blake
On tonight's showing, Acres is a better footballer at this stage of their Respective careers , than Hill.

Re: Brad v Blake
Is Acres 197cm..?
I wouldn't have thought so.
But that's what Hardwick just said he was.

Re: Brad v Blake
I was always against trading him. I said 2 years ago that I thought he would be our best player in 5 years time.

Re: Brad v Blake
Hardwick said Acres is 190 cm
He was referring to their big midfielders like Fyfe and Mundy and he mentioned that Bake is a "190 cm winger"

Re: Brad v Blake
He was very good but the Richo long bomb style crept into his game and the fact that he chipped it into the hotspot instead of having a ping in the third quarter, when they had the momentum, might have hurt his team's chances.
Also means he lacks a bit of self belief because I reckon he would have made the distance easily
I think their on field leaders just need to give more instruction and help lift guys like Blake who has missed a bit of continuity

Re: Brad v Blake
Always promised so much it will be interesting to see if he can get some consistency game wise he has always had talent & a great tank but injury & game time out of position stunted his potential!

Re: Brad v Blake
I was always of the opinion that he was rarely deployed as he should have been - confirmed by his contribution to winning games when he was thrown into the guts - not the thankless task of running the wings or playing forward
The reason for letting him go was that a change may give him opportunity - so a nebulous response - and he came from WA - again a nebulous response
My view was that he did not get the opportunity at St Kilda on a regular enough basis (and there were some injuries including debilitating groins he played with and which flared again after a BOG pre season practice game, then hurried back sore then rested ahead of tonight)
The issue was never class - although working on overhead marking with his size was an area to be worked on
His disposal by hand and foot was dangerous and had depth resulting in scoring chains (including the chain that sunk us!)
All the best to him - but I for one would prefer him still at St Kilda playing in the guts
One of the best players we have lost over the recent past

Re: Brad v Blake
Would have loved to see him get a crack as an inside/outside mid under Ratten. Would be very handy in the absence of Gresh, Hanners and Dunstan. We all know he has talent and we all know that Richo was great at destroying confidence and playing kids out of position. Injuries remain a real concern for Blake though

Of the players we delisted, helped retire or lost, including Steven and Bruce, I thought Acres might be the goose that got away...bit like a McEvoy. Haven't seen much of Acres, but he had better be good if you are comparing him to Hill. Hill is the classiest touch player we have..no?
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Hill is an overpaid downhill skier cashing in his pension.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Thu 03 Sep 2020 1:18am Of the players we delisted, helped retire or lost, including Steven and Bruce, I thought Acres might be the goose that got away...bit like a McEvoy. Re: Brad v Blake
I just would have loved to see him in a better Saints side, not necessarily a different coach. But with the benefit of hindsight I recon it came down to a question of who would you keep and who would you trade between Battle and Acres.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Thu 03 Sep 2020 1:01am Would have loved to see him get a crack as an inside/outside mid under Ratten. Battle can play the position Acres will probably settle into, wing, Battle has more upside in terms of versatility.

Re: Brad v Blake
The frustrating part is it appeared Blake was thrown into the deal as steak knives almost after completion from reading press at the time. Would have been very happy to retain him but based on career to date we have lost very little.
My guess was Blake was on a decent contract and we wanted to offload him to save coin.
Someone on here wrote who is a casualty of a Hannebery contract and I suggested Blake as there seemed to be no real reason for the trade other than salary dump.
Blake was a C grade AFL player with St Kilda with A grade qualities & performance in very small patches.
The ultimate AFL tease as he looked like a champion in bursts but failed to produce consistently.
No doubt the coach that unleashes Blakes potential will have a gem, but its more likely he'll tease with the odd flash of brilliance and one good game in 8-10 and be a C grade player for another 60-80 games.
Personally I hope Blake fires for Freo and and plays like a jet for the next 6 years.

No he said 197cm. I even replayed that bit with the sub titles on. I suggest you do the same. Came up 197cm. I did that because I thought I was hearing things. I wasn't.

Re: Brad v Blake
Hill by a mile thanks.
Both got 27 touches in their last game.
Can guarantee Hills were way more effective also. Acres has poor skills.

Re: Brad v Blake
We would have got Hill without Acres being steak knives but I think the main reason we traded Blake was to reduce salary cap, which we probably needed with five new players coming in.

Re: Brad v Blake
One thing I always liked about the way Acres played his football with us was the fact he was willing to draw a couple of tacklers and always looked to move the ball to the advantage of our players, mostly forward. He was one of the few who did. Clark & Coffield both have that trait.

Re: Brad v Blake
At this point in time, I’d rate Hill as in our best six players - even though he has not been sighted in some games on that wing.
(not considering Hannas on list...as usually injured)
1. Steele
2. Hill
3. Howard
4. Coffield
5. Ryder
6. Butler (just)
Marshall and Members...5 goals in five games...between them.
King...under construction
