Game Review

Post: # 1865221Post Impatient Sainter »

Player reviews:

Steele brilliant BOG
Hill best game for the club
Jones tagged but still contributed
Wilkie a great game down back
Ross did the job on Petracca onball - but he got away when moved forward
Sinclairs didnt get huge numbers but gave some run in the midfield
Coffield/Paton good games very reliable
Marshall our best tall competed well
Phillips did well not used enough coming out of defence earned place in side IMO
Ryder just gets a tick for his ruck work

Strugglers:

Howard had an absolute mare - was no where near it
Billings playing fatigued
King well beaten but he will learn and the coaching didnt help him
Hind unsighted
Kent unsighted - for a guy his size he is hopeless in one on one contests (needs to lose 10 kgs)
Butler sat on and struggled
Membrey has been out of form for weeks - needs a rocket
Long got 15 touches but all with no effect
Geary is a complete liability with ball in hand - time to retire
Clark worst game for the club for sometime (like his opponent took him away from the ball?)
Battle gave effort but not used enough forward (poor coaching)

Review:

Reason for the loss was covered by Ratts in his presser. We had 16 more inside 50's and couldnt convert, he blamed our ball use. I suggest his game plan has been worked out and teams flooding back filling the holes and forcing us to bomb it long and then just pushing King under the ball and picking off intercepts. Because of the size of the ground our small forwards had to work really high and were no where to be seen if the ball did hit the ground. How was it Melbourne always had an extra number in defence and we couldnt pressure their exit. It was obvious they were using the Geelong tactics and rather than evening the numbers we allowed them to do it the entire night. Our small forwards were chasing tails all night.

We have absolutely no plan B like make space on the fat side and have a mid or flanker lead into the 30-40 zone, no creating space and having forwards lead up at the ball or even move King higher in an attempt to shift May out of his zone.

A number of players had poor games eg Howard panicked or looked half asleep everytime he went to a contest. That lead where he was 20 metres behind a hack like Brown was disgraceful. Teams sit off Geary and allow him possession as they know he puts his team mates in the hot seat with his disposals. He is no way in our best 22 and if not being able to catch Weideman shows his time is well and trully up then I dont know what is. The soft goals we allowed Petracca were telling.

Overall it was a night of exceptionally poor coaching by Ratts and even more disappointing to blame the players for not implementing plan A when it has been clearly worked out.

King needs a rest and doubt he will play against Hawthorn, so give Battle the opportunity to play an entire game as a leading forward.

Good review. Bit harsh on long and gears though.

Ratts outcoached.

Harsh on Long. I’ve moved on Geary now, offers nothing that he can’t do from the bench (except he would put his body in front of a truck if it helped the team)

I know you rate Geary & I used to but the game has passed him by & was ordinary again last night IMO

The incident is Gawn marking over Seb. Discuss. (Assume all concerned knew in advance Gawn is a very tall, talented player and Carslisle was not on the plane).

Note we lost by less than a goal, so it was sort of significant.
