St Kilda vs Melbourne August 30 Ross and Wilkie
..both played...and so Peter Bennet our full-forward
It was Round 19, 1947
Junction Oval
6000 attended
Victoria in the throes of a Railway Strike- who would of thought?
Premier Cain concerned.
Ball Room Dancing at Prahran Town Hall
We went down by a mere 93 points.
Bennet, in his first three seasons....one win and one draw!!!
But he was a water polo champ and represented Australia at the '52 and '56 Olympics!!
Let's honor Mr. Bennet when St Kilda and Melbourne meet again on August 30!
Go Saints.

Good find.
Love the Saints named 'Mal McBean' and 'Stan Li Lievere'.
You just don't find names like that these days.

This was my father's belief
And this is also mine:
Let the corn be all one sheaf--
And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
By bitter bread and wine.

Just a lazy 18 goals for Fanning.
Yes classic names in there, Dullard and Spittle! The latter was a slippery customer.

Met Jimmy Ross a couple of times, once when Dad brought him home, around 1954 I think and again when I was a pit marshall at the Longford GP in 1965, the year Rocky Tresize was killed. Jim owned the Longford pub.
Lovely guy. Could kick a dropkick a country mile.

I think we were experimenting with Rhys Stanley at full back.

I think Spittle is related to Ray and Tony Shaw.

Might have realized Sat is actually the 29th and not the 30th, and I was so chuffed to have found what I thought was the same date...duh..
Bennet played his last season for us in 1954. We beat BOTH grand final teams that year..
....and still won the spoon.
Go Saints!

I can still see and hear my sister yelling out" Come on Peter Bennett " on the boundary in her pram at the old Junction oval.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Fri 28 Aug 2020 3:10pm Might have realized Sat is actually the 29th and not the 30th, and I was so chuffed to have found what I thought was the same date...duh..

Some very poor umpiring decisions especially in the forward half cost us that day.

Sure. Experience and the 'ol boys advantage.
See the experience level
Total games of the St Kilda team 558
..for Melbourne..1289!
Saints' player's average winning percentage of all players = 22%
Their coach was 53 years old.
Our's was 29, and playing, and...wait for it....James Hird's (that's right...James Hird's) grandfather!
Melbourne also had a guy called Norm Smith!
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
