The forward pocket role...
We’re doing it wrong.
Isn’t a forward pocket supposed to be an explosive’ish type player or when with exquisite speed/skill that doesn’t have the tank for a full midfield role?
We simply cannot afford to carry a player on the ground that has little to no capacity to influence the play other than by scrapping off contests.
Have a look at Butler today...
Not his best performance by any means but has this initiate ability to work up the ground, get the ball, burn off an opponent with his run and set up a forward play
Alternatively, look at Billings... essentially played FP in the last after arguable the worst 6 disposals over 3/4 game ever, kicked a goal, crumbed around contests, got the ball out and made play.
Kent on the other hand had 6 touches for the match, three per half, kicked one goal and was pretty much unsighted for the rest of the match accept in a few contests upfield where his opponents beat him in the contest.
We cannot carry this type of player and the odd opportunistic goal doesn’t cut it.
You cannot be in the team if you can’t influence the player and he can’t. His MO is getting free and taking marks.
Give the role to Phillips and rotate him with a resting midfielder like Billings or Steele if he gets tired. Even Jones looks a hell of a lot more dangerous down there

Mistake at selection for mine. Parker should have been given a game and both Phillips and Lonie were better options than Kent.

Re: The forward pocket role...
So the way I look at it is like this.
Kent is a plodder and he made an equal if not arguably better contribution than a 3rd round DP who is in his mid 20s now and on 800k per year in a game that was framed as very important for our growth beyond the Astersik Cup.
Bottom line is we shouldn't be worried about Kent becuse his payscale are a dime a dozen.
However we should be very concerned with a player we have invested considerable time and coin into that shows signs of not developing in the onfield leadership space and goes missing for 3 quarters. Which other player on 800k is allowed to contibute so little and no one bats an eyelid.
You can't win flags when 800k goes into a Player who produces the same output as a Kent.
Billing's is our really discussion point and real concern.

Have you compared Billings' output for the year with that of the others in his pay range I.E Hill and HannaBERY?Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Mon 24 Aug 2020 4:50pm So the way I look at it is like this.

Re: The forward pocket role...
Don't care about those types of comparisons today, my gripe is about him deciding when he wants to contribute. Of all games to switch on for only one quarter. 2 bloody points. We could have won if he even gave 2 quarters.whiskers3614 wrote: ↑Mon 24 Aug 2020 4:56pmHave you compared Billings' output for the year with that of the others in his pay range I.E Hill and HannaBERY?Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Mon 24 Aug 2020 4:50pm So the way I look at it is like this.

I hope he gets this out of his game becuse I'd be nervous about taking him into finals.

Re: The forward pocket role...
We should be persevering with Parker. He didn't set the world on fire on his last hit out BUT he has a physical presence plus X factor. On the physical side, opposition players know he's around. With Kent an Lonie, there's no physical presence. With his X factor, his run and leaps exude enthusiasm, his spark can lift the side.

Re: The forward pocket role...
Only Butler has cemented his small forward role. If one Kent, Lonnie, Parker or even Phillips can become more effective and dangerous regularly it will go along way to making us a contender. If not perhaps Billings could be a more permanent flanker and play another mid instead

Re: The forward pocket role...
Given the number of “small forwards” on our List, to me recruiting Butler was telling
It acknowledged a deficiency
Butler and Gresham address that deficiency - but, prior to his injury, our midfield deficiency saw Gresham so deployed
Gresham is one who can also contribute to midfield rotations adding strength - but which mids can we then push forward and cause problems for opposition sides?
These are the areas fixing the bottom end of our 22 need to address
Over to you Gags

Re: The forward pocket role...
I think Parker should replace Kent. He has much more upside than either Kent or Lonie. I would hope that for the finals we have Butler and Parker as the small to medium forwards and let Kent and Lonie fight it out for the third role.skeptic wrote: ↑Sun 23 Aug 2020 8:31pm We’re doing it wrong.

Re: The forward pocket role...
One of our fps at least should be a strong mark, e.g. Membrey, but spread not converge on the square. King is too easily double/triple teamed with likkle fps alongside him. Spread the ff line players and have hf and mids swooping. Of course one on one Max will snaffle plenty and he is nifty on the ground.

Re: The forward pocket role...
Phillips could hold down a wing, and Billings to the forward line. Kent still some value, maybe Hind will go out- needs to get more of the footy.

Re: The forward pocket role...
Do I have to even say it..?
Butler - 11 touches no goals
Kent - 9 touches no goals... not to mention he fumbled his way into killing our momentum a bunch of times
Hind - 5 touches, no goals
Same story week after week... if they don’t kick goals there’s no value.
Rest a midfielder there instead.
Phillips was better than all of them tonight. Would rather he sit there when having a break from the wing.
Bring Savage in for Hind
And Bytel in for Kent
Don’t need any specialist crumbed beyond Butler

Re: The forward pocket role...
I agree , Skeptic. Butler did some nice things , but most of his good work was up near the wing. He needs to be inside F50 all the time. The other 2 alas are not up to it.skeptic wrote: ↑Sat 29 Aug 2020 11:10pm Do I have to even say it..?
