Good on him but fair crack, Kent and Butler have both kicked better goals this year under pressure from field play. Jack good and I'm sure J. Steven was among the first to congratulate but often Newnesy misses from 30m in the 45 degree arc. I think the photographer stirred him up, what a jerk he was.

Would never had done that playing with the Saints
Because we wouldn't have got that soft free.

Our secret revenge against Fremantle for earlier in the season.
And over charging during trade period.

Freo were insipid.
We should have offered Newnes a 5 year contract.
5x300k vs what Hannebery and Hill are costing??
would've been a bargain.
Nice hindsight and recency bias.
It's not Newnes v Hannebery or Hill.
Newnes would have kept a player like Bytel out of the team. I know who I'm more excited about.
No recency bias whatever, the player comparisons I mentioned are over their entire careers,
Not saying they are direct swaps, just that Newnes underlines how much we overpaid for the two mercenaries!
I just watched it...very tough to have kicked it from there and after the siren. Great effort and good on him. Newnes did become stale at our club but there was a period where I thought he would be an important part of our future.
Maybe Richo is to blame but I wish him all the best there.
The shot for goal was taken next to where the ball landed - at the fence! Clearly, a big mistake. The ball would have crossed the line near the 50 metre arc, perhaps even outside it. The boundary umpire pointed to a spot on the arc when he thought it was out on the full. When it went the other way, he appeared to be bamboozled. He should have informed the field umpire of the correct position. Also, the wrong player took the kick as Newnes (No 32) was not the closest player. Michael Gibbons (No 40) should have received it. The two field umpires did not communicate at all well. It was a 50/50 down field free but was a foolish bump by the Freo player.
No doubt, if it was the Saints who were playing Freo, the AFL would now intervene, and rule that, because of "process", the result should be reversed.

Argue all you want about the free but no two ways, it was a beautiful kick.
Jack is an incredibly good setshot kick, he's also a very good marker of the ball overhead and in packs, is Carlton playing him in the forward line more, I felt he would have been a greater asset in our forward line at times.

And the folks at Carlton also think so.
But they would have also see him with space and time on 45 from 30 miss a pretty easy goal in that same game.
More credit he had the courage to have a real crack and move the camera guy on. Those camera people have crocodile skin for hides and would shove a camera in the face of Mother Mary given a chance.
Which was the soft free?
The deliberate OOB or the down field?
I thought both were there.
From the TV it looked like the ball went out a lot further out than the position Newness took his free.
What a ripping kick, good on Jack, happy for him.
Jack was going nowhere with us and we were going nowhere with him.
We tried to trade him and nothing was on offer, I'm very happy for the guy that he got another shot at AFL.

What was especially impressive was just how determined he looked when he took the kick.
Like not only did he back himself but he had to take and kick it.
I couldn’t help but think back to his last few seasons with us where no tackles was ok... trying to kick the ball off the ground and fresh airing it when he should have picked it up and tried to beat an opponent was considered ok.
Heck no matter how many dinky turnovers, subpar efforts and half hearted attempts at a contest he was not to be dropped.
In fact IIRC, Newnes ended up dropping himself as Richo simply wouldn’t.
Seems to me that they have put some expectations on Newnes that go beyond just trying and looking out for number one is good enough and he has responded.
Good luck to the kid

Apparently if a down-the-field free goes out on the full then it should go back to where it was kicked from, but I’m not exactly sure.
Ripper kick still, I gave him no chance.
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.

All of those players we let go or lost are doing bugger all this year, including Newnes.
Definitely the correct calls.
No doubt.
But Newnes has certainly looked better than in his last few seasons with us. I laughed when I saw Newnes take the kick and expected him to look super uncomfortable and indecisive before kicking it out on the full.
Wouldn’t have kicked that 18 months ago
