Top 10 trades since 2000
Not including draft picks, rookies & delisted FA like Membrey & Roberton.
1. Draft pick #26 for Schneider & Dempster
Combined 288 games from two high quality clubmen and players
The RL Sydney relationship paid huge dividends for our #1 ranked trade
It wasn’t the Carey/ Longmire, Andrew McLoed or the Daniher deal but I doubt we’ll ever do a better trade than this.
Edit 1.5 - Draft Pick #10 & # 68 to Hawthorn for draft pick #7 + # 23 + #36
2. Gehrig for #18 & Sierakowski
Having first pick in the pre-season helped our hand and regardless of WC securing Daniel Kerr with the pick this was a great trade.
The MB factor played a big part in exciting recruits.
3. Hamill for D.Wakelin (PA for #4) & Cranage
Wakelin was a good footballer but Hamill was what we needed for leadership & toughness and to mentor a young Nick Reiwoldt.
4. Bruce for #48
99 solid games from Josh + Zac Jones is a mighty legacy for a solitary 3rd round pick.
5. #6 for Carslile & draft pick #18.
Made better by picking up Gresham & its hard to argue you’d complain if Gresham was secured at #6 with “Jake the steak knives”.
6. Farren Ray + #48 for draft pick #31
134 games from a good consistent footballer for a small shuffle of picks
7. Gardiner + #53 for draft pick #48
52 games for a shuffle of 5 places when we were desperate for ruck stocks
8. King & Charlie Gardiner for draft pick #90
47 games & 12 respectively is good value for a pick the Cats never used.
king served us well at the end of a fine career
9. Steele for draft pick #20
Seemed like high payment at the time but should be a quality 200 gamer for the club
10. # 23 for Gram
153 games for the club and was a very good player at his peak
Wildcard: Barry Hall for #13 Dal Santo, #17 – Black & #45 Knobel
Win / win for both clubs but had we taken #17 to the super draft that could have been a bonanza.
James Kelly went @ #17 though not suggesting we would have taken him.
Still to play out:
Hannebery, Hill, Howard, Ryder, Butler, Austin, Kent

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
Yep, I'll do that one as well when I have time.
off the top of my head with no research would be:
1. Lovett
Lightning quick if not fastest player I've seen.
We were so seduced by his electrifying pace we forgot he was a butt average footballer and a really s*** bloke.
2. Watts
Nepotism at its finest.
The guy who is a successful businessman later admitted a footy carer wasn't a priority.'
3. Brooks
#6 & #24 from memory
4. Lee
#12 and something back for an undersized KPP who wasn't much of a player.
5. McEvoy (would have to check this one out as it was complex)
Nathan Freeman, Tom Hickey & Billy Longer might also make the list.

Black for Fiona (via Simmonds) wasn't it?
Not good for us.

First round pick for a guy who played one game and later admitted footy wasn't a priority & who just happened to be the son of the CEO.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 3:28pmWatts was good trade the bloke got injured he could definatley play.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 3:20pmYep, I'll do that one as well when I have time.

Plenty of players got over a lot worse injuries than Watts, he didn't want it bad enough.
And justifyably so as he has a very reasonable business career.
If you think a 1 game return from a non committed player is a good trade I'd humbly suggest we agree to disagree.

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
It's still early days, but this has to be top ten (even though it's just picks)...
2016 - St Kilda trade picks 10 & 68 to Hawthorn for picks 23 & 36 and 2017 First Round.
Hawthorn needed 10 to land Jaeger O'Meara, which the Gold Coast then used to select Jack Bowes (44 games, ok player). Pick 68 ended up at Geelong, where they selected Timm House (0 games, since delisted).
St Kilda's pick 23 became 25 and we selected Ben Long, 36 became 39 and we selected Josh Battle. Hawthorn's 2017 first rounder ended up pick 7, we selected Hunter Clark.
So Clark, Battle and Long, for Bowes and nobody.

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
He could barely walk after the injury and his ankle basically had to be fused together. Obviously the end result wasn't great but the trade at the time was worth it. Fergus Watts had all the makings of a gun key forward.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 3:35pmFirst round pick for a guy who played one game and later admitted footy wasn't a priority & who just happened to be the son of the CEO.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 3:28pmWatts was good trade the bloke got injured he could definatley play.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 3:20pmYep, I'll do that one as well when I have time.

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
Lovett definitely the worst trade of the 21st century for us. We gave up a 1st rounder, smack bang in the middle of us trying to win a flag, for a bloke who had never finished in the top 10 in the B&F of a mediocre club. And when he did arrive he was about as fit as I am now at age 50. Then he went on to disgrace the club before his 1st pre season was even half way through.
Barry Brooks would have to be right up there.

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
So we trade a first rounder for key forward (Watts) who was under-performing at Adelaide after managing 5 games in two seasons for very little return when on our list is Reiwoldt, Hamill, Kossie, Gehrig, Brooks & Pfitzner.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 4:14pmHe could barely walk after the injury and his ankle basically had to be fused together. Were our key forward stocks for the present or future low? Clearly not.
Watts just happened to be the son of the CEO of the club.
He managed one game, was traded in (IMO) for nepotism and you suggest that was a good trade.
We gave up #18 & Sierakowski for Gehrig and #17 for Watts. Watts admits he didn't have the desire for AFL.
Again, if that's what you think is a good trade lets agree to disagree.

Probably as it was spread over two seasons.
Removing the players from the equation, 10 & 68 for 7 + 23 + 36 sits top 3 in our trades for sure.

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
Kicked 10 in SANFL final as a 19 year old so was hardly underperforming over there. Hamill Gehrig we’re nearing the end and Kosi had injuries and was rucking. Well worth a crack for possible 10 year key forward.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 6:27pmSo we trade a first rounder for key forward (Watts) who was under-performing at Adelaide after managing 5 games in two seasons for very little return when on our list is Reiwoldt, Hamill, Kossie, Gehrig, Brooks & Pfitzner.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 18 Jun 2020 4:14pmHe could barely walk after the injury and his ankle basically had to be fused together. You see it as a good trade.
You must be over the moon about Max Kings performance to date given he's clocked up twice the matches as Watts.
I wonder if he was not the son of the CEO who was close mates with the coach would we have taken him?
Anyway let's agree to disagree and move on.

You must be over the moon about Max Kings performance to date given he's clocked up twice the matches as Watts.
I wonder if he was not the son of the CEO who was close mates with the coach would we have taken him?
Anyway let's agree to disagree and move on.
NO IFS OR BUTS HARVS IS KING OF THE AFL

Re: Top 10 trades since 2000
What I did know as a fact was that Adelaide were filthy at losing Watts who they had great faith in
They were developing him with WWT - including as someone mentioned kicking 10 as a 19 year old in a Final
Came to St Kilda the next season - then injury
Brooks was young and behind some very talented ruck stocks at PA, including someone now on our coaching panel
No doubt he had talent - but injury early on impacted then Thomas including him v PA as a back pocket to counter the rucks PA played forward (and who killed us game after game)
He played as a forward in the last Minor Round game and moved well, kicking 3 from memory but was dropped the following week when he probably should have been retained (memory is we lost that Final?)
Never seemed to have the confidence of the Coach of the time, a Coach who did not rate ruckmen from memory
Injuries and opportunity
Was Lovett found not guilty?
The team deficiency at that time was pace and they went looking for pace in a time where our bottom 6 left our class exposed
They were looking at replacing a bottom 6 with a top 10 - with pace and skills
Didn’t work - but that is life
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose
And in trading you leave something on the table for the other party otherwise there is no “deal”
So win/win
