Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
So the VFL, sorry the pretend AFL, has reconstituted footy centred on old Melbourne town. What a joke. The only place in Australia where it’s not safe to be right now is Melbourne. Unidentified community transmission. Only place in OZ where that’s the case. We have an apartment in Melbourne that we want to visit but can’t do because it’s not safe to do so. And if we do we can’t return to WA where there are a total of Seven cases and no-one in hospital. But Gillon has pressed on with with what will inevitably turn out to be a farce. I’m sitting here chuckling about how soon it will be before a Melbourne based player gets COVID and the whole thing comes crashing down. You should all have come to Perth. But that doesn’t gel with the VFL, sorry AFL, mantra does it

Should've gone to Alice Springs and Darwin. Could at least get a bit of a crowd to games, and the players can hit the pubs on a friday night!

Move 4 clubs and staff to the Gold Coast or 16 clubs to Perth - I wonder if cost had anything to do with it?1965 Saint wrote: ↑Sat 16 May 2020 12:33am So the VFL, sorry the pretend AFL, has reconstituted footy centred on old Melbourne town. Re: Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
Yes, it's a worry that transmission is causing fast food outlets and a meat packing plant is to shut, plus there have been a few worries at a nursing home, but really, our numbers are not too bad everything considered - currently our trending is probably the worst in Australia/New Zealand though, and given our weather is due to turn very cold and wet, with local schools scheduled to re-open coinciding with the re-start of the season, I would've thought maybe Western Australia or South Australia would be better options health wise.
Who knows what will happen? I heard the German Bunsdesliga is restarting this week and Sky Germany are making the televised games free-to-air to discourage people watching in large groups around at friends' homes.
Could Fox Footy consider doing the same, I womder?

Well, you can sign me up for this for a start! Be popular with the players too - get away from a southern winter to a nice, dry, warm climate with not too many people around. Sounds like a winner to me.desertsaint wrote: ↑Sat 16 May 2020 12:45am Should've gone to Alice Springs and Darwin. It was a Victorian competition first and foremost and it should have stayed that way. IMHFO that is. So stop your winging , we at least allow you to join in.1965 Saint wrote: ↑Sat 16 May 2020 12:33am So the VFL, sorry the pretend AFL, has reconstituted footy centred on old Melbourne town. I do agree that the hub should not be in Victoria though. I would say, NSW, ACT and the NT are all safer places and virus free. Qld is not far behind.

Re: Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
Can't play in perth because of 14 day quarantine for other states flying in and players don't want extended time away from their family.
Not to mention the costs of all teams and families in hubs.
Easy to criticize but not easy to come up with an alternative solution
Personally I don't think Victoria is in a position to open up the state fully until they have this virus under control.

Re: Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
Okay lets put it to the people...
Given the choice between a painful and lonely death by respiratory disease in the ICU of a state-of-the-art Victorian hospital, or an extended stay in Perth, which way do you go?
Personally I'd say death would be my preference.
Thoughts?

Surely it comes to cost.
I love WA but its miles away (increasing cost), extremely expensive (just living there) and it just happens that most teams are in Melbourne.

The WA and SA governments have decided to keep their borders closed for no other reason than to make themselves seam to be in charge. Victoria, NSW and the ACT never closed their borders. No cases in the ACT and only the odd one or two in NSW so have to agree with you there. Would add 20th century tosspots though. Those two States and Q'ld are so far behind the times it's not f****** funny.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Sun 17 May 2020 12:42pmThe WA and SA governments have decided to keep their borders closed for no other reason than to make themselves seam to be in charge. Re: Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
It’s not unsafe in Victoria.
Stop believing the bullshyte media hysteria.
Untraceable community transmission which is the only really relevant stat ranges from 1 to 3 new cases per day from well over 10,000 daily tests.
The Vic government has stated community transmission rates are very low in Victoria hence the gradual easing of restrictions.
The WA premier is a compete nutjob and has been called out by many in Vic parliament including the premier.
It’s not his fault he’s from WA - it’s a lovely place to visit but the severe them-vs-us syndrome can’t be cured by any vaccine or injecting disinfectant for that matter.
By the way, only 11 Victorians are in hospital here at the moment - hardly a catastrophe.

On statistics alone, Victoria is the least safe state in Australia.saintspremiers wrote: ↑Sun 17 May 2020 1:32pm It’s not unsafe in Victoria.

"As it happened: Victoria records 11 new cases, Melbourne's west becomes a hotspot as clusters continue"......age.com.au
"The total number of cases in Australia has passed 7000, with roughly 20 new cases recorded each day this week.
There have been 11 new cases of coronavirus in Victoria in the past 24 hours, taking the state’s total to 1554, including one new positive case linked to Fawkner McDonald's.
Two more cases have been linked to the Cedar Meats abbattoir, bring the total tally for that cluster to 98."......age.com.au

At least with AFL we follow a relatively Corona-safe sport, unlike that diseased Corona cesspit sport of golf that Dirty Dan quite rightly banned.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

He needed to go hard early back in March and into April - but could’ve and should’ve taken a similar lead to the other states in May.

Re: Footy in Melbourne -what a joke
Actually stats do lie in this case. Victoria has done over 5x the number of tests that WA has. Of those tests Victoria has shown 0.4% positive where as WA has 0.7% positive. Simple logic if you test more you get more positive results. WA has failed to test sufficiently so is showing low numbers. On that logic Burundi is the safest place in the world as they have 0 cases they also have done 0 tests.WA has done just under 80,000 tests for it's 2.5 million people 1 in each 31 people. Victoria has done about 430,000 for it's 6.5 million people 1 in each 15.
Stats can be used many ways.

Victoriastan has only 60 active cases as of yesterday. Only 8 in hospital.
I assume more than half of the 60 are either asymptotic or hardly sick so unlikely to spread it - shame we don’t get to hear about the number of asymptotic positive cases!
That’s why the restrictions are ultra conservative and need rapid opening up

I think the problem is that the asymptomatic cases are just as likely to spread it as the symptomatic ones. More likely in fact, since they're the people who aren't bothering to self-isolate.saintspremiers wrote: ↑Thu 28 May 2020 8:43amBut Stinger has been terrified of this the whole time.SinCitySainter wrote: ↑Tue 26 May 2020 10:59pm Actually stats do lie in this case.
