Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
Bruce Eva introduction with some stats and introduced Matt Finnis who needs a haircut and to trim his beard - just like me!
Matt Finnis:
- hearteneing to see the Saints members and player sponsors financially sticking by the club
- genuine appreciation
- last few weeks - pre easter felt "in crisis" with pandemic - luckily escaped health wise but not financially so it was all "survival"
- the first aim was to secure the liquidity of the club - reduce costs - transition staff - maximise revenue / cash flow
- last few weeks have been about stability and navigating through the crisis
- playing group went away with clear programs and communication tools
- the AFL secured line of credit against Marvel made available to all clubs that want it
- Saints have signed up to access the line of credit
- Saints have been very transparent with AFL for years anways so really is business as usual
- So focus now turns to improved performance on and off field
- frustrating because the feeling was with new players and Moorabbin firing up + new sponsors like Deliveroo
- momentum was building and came to halt
- so now preserve and protect revenues and stabalise to minimise debt
- debt has been accumulated to re-build Moorabbin which was seen as an important foundation that will pay dividends
- now looking at creative ways to reduce
- so members and sponsors are critical
- the sposnsors have been fantastic in their support
- our members have been amongst the most loyal of all the clubs
- know some members are suffering financially and club wants the to reach out for help
- likewise humbled by members who contact to reconfirm or even increase their $ commitment
- AFL looking at next week to announce PERHAPS an early July resumption of the season - but with no crowds
Questions:
Bruce Eva - asks about Hubs?
Finnis: Meeting today with all club CEOs but no current update - but AFL has said everything is ON the table but no compromise on health.
Ian McNamarra: Will seats be refunded because it goes to AFL not the saints
Finnis: reserve seats in new stadium deal the club gets the lions share of the seat $s. Club looking at some way of helping seat holders.
Sue: Will we survive the Covid-19 crisis
Finnis: Will survive. But now its about how tom be competitive on the other side. Need support to make that happen.
Buce Eva:
Finnis: All major sponsors have been great. pepper. Dare. Deliveroo etc trying to support them all with value.
Gail Sanders: have any coaches and players taken any other work during stand down / AFLW B&F?
Finnis: Some gone home and some working on family farms, some helping Startrack helping packing etc and the AFLW event will eb held ast some stage as they bring back to staff to help create an end of season event
Caroyn Lewis: Timeline on repaying debt and what is delay Stage 2 grand stand / aquatic facilities?
Finnis: Eventually will start Stage 2 but is on hold - despite having Government commitment to contribute but not prudent. There was plan to reduce debt this year but thats not happening now so we are mostly looking at minimising extra debt.
Bruce Eva introduced Brett Ratten.
Ratten:
- Players appreciate player sponsor support and it creates long term friendships as he still is friends with his player sponsors
- priority #1 is keep players safe and allowed them to go where they wanted to - Steele ACT, Long darwin, farm boys back on farms, interstate boys back home etc
- All the coaching staff are back in their old "day" professions to get the revenue to pay their bills within the first week
- ratten has spoken to everyone - players and coaches
- 4 pillar training program - each player has a tailored program paired up with another player but they rotate to keep connections
- Some restrictions as only can train in 2s where as Adelaide clubs can train in 10s which helps their training / connection
- Footy education is part of the pillars - very important
- Coonection - teammmates / lines but most importantly for mental health is chatting on whatsapp / zoom to keep connection
- There is a well-being survey coordianted by Ben Robbins plus starting meditation ths week
- Anticipating june back at club and July start playing
- Ratts had a team meeting on monday - message of no regrets in 2020 and there has to be trust to work hard and get it right
- Some will get it right and some will damage their careers
- We are 0-1 but lots of footy to be played and still striving to achieve what we want to in 2020
bruce Eva: Bulldogs / Adelaide coping with issues
Ratten: Everyone is frustrated with lockups and training in just 2s ... competitive people finding it even harder ... BUT everyone is going through similar situation ... so we are trying to have
Leonie Bryan : As a coach are you constantly evolving and how adapting to this crisis
Ratten: I am a peoples person. Lots of chats. Sending youtubes to palyers. Doing reading to improve.
Rowan pierce (?) - arfe we looking at what others are doing to see
Ratten: Coaches Association - Clarkson / hardwick / ratts in a team - and everyone doing it pretty the same. Webinar footy eductaion is an example - takes twice as long. Strength and Conditioning pretty similar
What is Josh Battes best position in team
ratten: has shown he can really play down back. tried in midfield but didnt nail it. Eite runner. So maybe down back and forward. With possible list size reduction VERY valuable.
Bruce eva: Injures - long and Gresham - where are they?
ratten: Ben Long started running and going well. Missed 3-4 weeks. Gresh PCL 6-8 weeks but with body shape he is ahead of schedule and starts running this Friday and should be right for round 2.
Jeanette Waugh: happy with pre-season and are you optimistic for season?
Ratten: Pleased with the Marsh Series and showed group has some real capabilities. Saw it in Rd 1 and we just missed opportnities and really should have been 57 points up mid 3rd quarter and then North kicked 4 in a row. We lack consistency / concentration / finishing and this needs to improve. Our best is really good. Group has capabilities. Exciting times.
Bruce Eva introduces Geary - including beard commentry - but gears has trimmed down the Ned Kelly beard.
- Gears is eeeling fresh as a daisy.
- frustrating not playing
- been busy
- has a 2 year old daughter
- stay at home dad M/T/F when wife working 3 days p/week
- training too
- all players have been mixing pair ups for training
- organised amongst themselves
- young players reaching out to older players
- also older players mentorings
- Bytel cant fit Gears in auntil next Tuesday as so popular
- Gears has trained with about 8-10 players
- Gears says Bytel (lives with dan Butler who is inballarat)
- Bytel is a young popular entertaining teammate
- 200 cominhg up for Gears - but no idea where it will be and under hat circumstance - maybe no crowd
Question: who is faster gears or tim Membry
Gears: have Tim covered in running. Tim wanted him to buy a mountain bike to go with him - gears declined - not buying abike for one ride plus Tim has him covered in power work
Question: Contact with apddy McCartin
Gears: Paddy still involved just as much in past. Was his birthday few days ago. Not formally on list but traeted like he is.
Question: How does he feel about condensed season and possibly shorter breaks.
Geary: Shorter quarters allows body to pull up better. The quarter go pretty quickly. Can play with 4 to 5 day breaks. But longer games would have benefitted us because a good running group.
Question: Do you feel the palyers physical conditioning has dropped
Gears: feels that players will be back better as had strong base and have been training really hard so should make gains and come back fit and strong. but the skills under pressure will be the challenge. But have been given drills to keep up skills and touch.
Question: having abreak or watching old games
Gears: injured the majority of last season. Havent watched alot of the old games. Mostly Disney movies. But really missing the game.
Question: KPIs while away
Gears: Documents everything he does each day. Most boys doing it. helps reaffirm the work they are doing. And working inpairs keeps accountability. matt (fitnees) and Ben (mental health) get feedback from all players
Question: How did it feel playing infront of no crowd
Geary: weird feeling - pre-game gee up to perform in front of a big crowd and the crowd gives you an extra lift and no crowd did suck energy. Have to get used to it for period of time. Players miss the crowd lift for sure. Fans create the atmosphere.
Bruce Eva mentions Anzac Day - this is 60th anniversary Melb v St K played in Anzac Day and paid tribute to those who paid ultimate sacrifice and those who made war contributions. Ratten says we all need to mark it and his father was proud of his medals etc. Gears - encouraging people to stand in driveways and pay their respects.
Bruce Eva thanks everyone.
Ends.

Did anyone bother to ask that question ?

I am very interested to see whether the public has an appetite for more games during the week. The AFL is likely to try to fit in as many games as possible this year.
If it works I can see us playing more games in a traditional season to offset the likely revenue contraction per game the AFL and clubs' face.
5 to 6 games a month per club with a cap on number of games individuals can play in a space of time could become a reality.
I presume media will be happy with more content and sponsors will be happy with more exposure time.
Interesting times ahead.

Re: Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
Great summation BFUSA. The question "Question: Do you feel the players physical conditioning has dropped" was mine and was somewhat less articulate than the full question I typed, but it got answered comprehensively so no harm done. Was a good initiative, and a welcome interruption to the isolation......

Everyone knows that ANZAC day belongs exclusively to Collingwood and Essendon with the traditional MCG blockbuster cemented into the fixture.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

The media rights companies have already proposed the value of the rights is considerably devalued due to no crowds and lesser quality game due to cramming of games.Shaggy wrote: ↑Tue 21 Apr 2020 6:30pmThanks so much BFUSA for the summary. Prime time slots would still be the same number per week, after the first weekend of binging punters will become fatigued with a fairly boring product also making sponsorship exposure devalued.

Long term no.
AFL has the upper hand at the moment over Foxtel / 7.
AFL asking them to extend rights for more years at the same coin now rather than when rights expire.
Foxtel and 7 know that Amazon Prime are ready to step in from 2022 and at much bigger coin.
7 and Foxtel will sign up to ensure Amazon Prime don’t get the rights.

Re: Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
BFUSA, when Ratts mentioned we should have been 57 points up in Q3 against North, I thought he said he was advised that from one of the assistants in the box.
I didn't properly catch that bit, but presumably it was from some metric.
Would be interested to know what the science behind that was, or was it just a gut feel?

Re: Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
It's possible he was referring to the "expected score" which is a DOS invention he brought accross from his days at Hawthorn and a system Clarko relied upon heavily. Basically a mathematical system used to calculate a score with fromula and a weighting system applied to different types of score attempts.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Wed 22 Apr 2020 1:02am BFUSA, when Ratts mentioned we should have been 57 points up in Q3 against North, I thought he said he was advised that from one of the assistants in the box.

The big unkown is the long term impact to the media subscription model and advertising revenue. What is spooking all types of business at the moment is what does the biggest recession since the great depression look like.BackFromUSA wrote: ↑Wed 22 Apr 2020 12:17am

The owners of 7 and Foxtel won't be rushed by the AFL playing 101 sales tactics and waving the Amazon stick at them, if anything 7 and Foxtel could possibly get the extension AND at a considerably discounted price.
The world was a much different place at the time the AFL had tea and scones with Amazon.

He called it an 'equity stat'. Darren O'Shaughnessy who is our Senior Analyst (Sports Analytics & Informatics) is the guru in this area. Effective score by DOS.
As a side note, it will be resources like DOS and his analytics team that will be taken from us by the AFL with the new insolvency management system.

Question: How does he feel about condensed season and possibly shorter breaks.
Geary: Shorter quarters allows body to pull up better. The quarter go pretty quickly. Can play with 4 to 5 day breaks. But longer games would have benefitted us because a good running group.
Prime time slots would still be the same number per week, after the first weekend of binging punters will become fatigued with a fairly boring product also making sponsorship exposure devalued.
I am talking about Monday, Tuesday & Wednesdays. Media wants more - not less AFL. They are not prime prime TV slots but it is money to be had so long as it is not at the sacrifice of weekend slots. Channel 7 and Fox sports are both going broke without AFL because they do not have product to attract top end audiences.
Taiwan, which is roughly same size as us, has kept their hospitality industry open throughout the pandemic and yet has only recorded 6 deaths by focusing management of the virus on testing rather than isolating everyone. Taiwan baseball is not surprisingly recording its largest media viewing ever.

In practical terms we hear that according to the model StK's estimated lead over Nth in R1 8 minutes into the third quarter should have been 55 points.
In reality the lead was only 31 and wasn't enough.
I think it basically says if you direct the ball to scoring hotspots and actually kick straight your score will prosper.
Guru Bob could have modelled that without a computer!

Re: Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
I'm pretty certain the analytics team has been reduced to Arnold and his abacus so Guru Bob could probably be of help. Please send the club any old scrap paper and pencils to help Ratts draw up the team sheets and game day strategies.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Thu 14 May 2020 8:50pm

Re: Player Sponsor Zoom Event Summary
Second zoom meeting underway.
Very interesting interview with Lethers.
No tips on how to pick up married women, but the 10 or 11 opened bottles of mostly spirits in the background shows Lethers has been putting in some quality overtime.

We have more than that number of opened bottles of spirits in our home and neither the missus or I drink. Otherwise they would be empyy bottles of spirits.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Thu 21 May 2020 2:19pm Second zoom meeting underway.
