Fans will keep us afloat, says Saints past players president
The president of St Kilda’s past players and officials group is adamant that Saints’ supporters won’t let the club be killed off despite the existential threat posed by the coronavirus.
Like all AFL clubs, the Saints have stood down most of their staff as part of the drastic austerity measures put in place to keep the league and clubs afloat amid the enormous financial hits coming as a result of the season being suspended indefinitely because of the pandemic.
St Kilda have long been one of the AFL’s financially weaker clubs, with a debt of around $12 million and having received $4 million more in AFL distributions than any other Victorian club for each of the last three years.
But former Hawthorn and Saints player Russell Morris, who played 66 games for St Kilda in the first half of the 1990s and now leads the club’s past players group, stressed that despite the enormity of the financial burden, the club meant too much to too many for it to wither and die.

“We’ve got 40,000 members and who knows how many other supporters around the country. You wouldn’t expect that they are going to let something like this kill their footy club. Because football is their life,” Morris said on Wednesday.
“The people don’t let their club disappear. I think you’ll find that at all the traditional clubs. I can’t see a club just folding and saying, ‘no, St Kilda is no longer.’
“You will never find a club going, ‘OK, sorry, we’ve got to pack up our bags, see ya later, St Kilda Football Club will not exist again.’”
Morris noted that St Kilda had endured all manner of hardships across the club’s 147-year history, but that the Saints always managed to survive.
“People will find a way. It’s not about passing a bucket around like the old days, tin rattling or anything like that. And you’ve got to also remember, there’s a television deal for 18 clubs.”
Morris echoed the sentiments of Saints chief executive Matt Finnis, who reassured fans that the club would endure.
“People talk about our debt, but they don’t talk as much about the priority of a decision that we made to raise $30 million and build a foundation, an asset, at Moorabbin which will keep this footy club in a great place for many years to come,” Finnis told SEN.
“It allows us to connect with our people, to allow us to attract incredible talent to our football club over the last couple of years and we’ll make sure we back ourselves in to be a stronger club down the track

Re: Fans to keep saints afloat.
i have zero business knowledge. I don’t understand why this virus means that our club might fold, in so far as if human society and Melbourne itself won’t fold too.
I assumed that all clubs live by the TV dollar and the AFL itself acts as the distribution control center for that money. I have never thought that memberships count for much revenue although they certainly help in the sense that the AFL must encourage all clubs to seek and expand them for the general health and because they enhance the appeal of the spectacle at the TV rights bargaining table.
Perhaps there are a lot of silent benefactors behind the scenes I need to be recognized more? Anyway, I assume we as a small club will feel this pain, but all of the economy also feels it, all clubs feel it and that potentially one or two industries will do OK and one of those is ....TV! The other being the telecoms.

Club memberships are like loyalty schemes/scams for airlines and supermarkets. The AFL and their "partners" benefit way more than members do.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sun 29 Mar 2020 11:53am i have zero business knowledge. The club won't fold, not unless the AFL are thinking about downsizing by giving market share away and I'm guessing the AFL and thier "partners" will still be addicted to profit on the ther side of this crisis.

Or is it dictum bene?
Unrelated I admit...
I thought the whole petrol points/ airline miles model was a scam and would die by now....and it hasn’t. (I even thought it was illegal because it functions like an alternative currency and not legal tender and it don’t pay tax on points)
It hasn’t died and loyalty schemes have reached a new an in my opinion potentially combustible point because in parallel with the points/miles thing has been the complete and voluntary surrendering of our data to Facebook, booking.com and a relatively small handful of internet operators that can concentrate and crunch this data and resell it.
So perhaps members in fifty years will share a superannuation plan, get cheap flights, free water etc. as long as they wear a cap saying, Thankyou Facebook.

Interesting take, when Qantas was looking to sell their loyalty program a few years ago I could not understand where the benefit would be to a purchaser and why it was deemed one of the profitable arms of Qantas.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sun 29 Mar 2020 12:38pmBene dictumSecret Kiel wrote: ↑Sun 29 Mar 2020 12:17pmClub memberships are like loyalty schemes/scams for airlines and supermarkets. I assumed the liability of redemption against flights would well outweigh any benefit.
I spoke with a finance contact who stated a few things:
- Sale to partners like banks etc generates huge revenue as FF members will sign up to credit cards if linked to points. The income generated is more than 3 times multiple cost of points.
I'm guilty here, only hook an altitude card that links with my FF.
- Most points are used for upgrade, not flights.
Guilty, have never used FF points despite having a couple of million stored atm for a flight but use them on upgrades most times I fly.
- Loyalty programs are exactly that, I'm a sucker as I want to retain my P1 status and achieve lifetime P so fly with Qantas regardless.
- Data retention and sale, monster value and yes interlinked with social media and cross promotion.
Yes I've bought their wine and luggage offers
I'm probably the only person in Australia that doesn't have facebook or any social media presence other than linkedin, so they can't get me there!
Store based loyalty programs are by and large data capturing and nothing but a pain in the @rse. You get nothing and they bombard you with email and end up in the blocked sender bin.
