Learning to like our number 16 again

Post: # 1841682Post saintspremiers »

Now that spud Newnes and his photo have left us, I’m starting to enjoy our new number 16 quite a lot.

Mr Butler zips all over the place and has really surprised me.

When I was watching yesterday and saw the 16 I did think bloody Newnes and then realised who it was. He will be very good for us with the odd goal and heaps of pressure

Cooney appeared to be very critical of his performance

Maybe he lost the photo so Teague doesn’t have to give him another hundred consecutive games of mediocrity

He provides some good service into the forward line, Jeeves might be a handy pick up for the saints.

Not for me. They lost. And I think they better get used to it - because I think we would have beaten Essendon easily if we had played them today. Geelong were putrid.

I think Stuv might've just jumped on the southbound train.

Jack Newnes played over 150 senior games and, for that record alone, deserves a fair bit more respect than you will ever give him.

Butler was just OK in the practice matches.

Newnes was just OK for a few years and some on here hate him.

Question is, can we play both him and Kent?

Lonie is a lock - surely we don’t play 3 smallish forwards ??

I’m not a Kent fan at all so it’s a no brainer for me if it’s a choice between the two

Disagree strongly.

We had an inept coach who was ultra conservative and Newnes never got injured and for most of his career just plodded along. He never properly developed. That’s why we got rid of him.

Yeah but we didn't have the insensitive keyboard geniuses of the internet era when the real Spud was playing.

Wish Jack Newnes well and hope he can successfully continue his career. Even if it is at bloody Carlton!

I don't hate Newnes - good on him for playing that many games. Says a lot about the last 6 years at St K. However, I intensely dislike the various combinations of Match Committee members and their "leader" whom pretty much gifted him at least his last 50 games (if not a few more). Talk about rewarding mediocrity and encouraging more of it in the rest of the group.

The new 16 on the other hand - is exactly what we need - a decent mark and kick; running machine and elite pressure forward. The fact that Richmond has players on their list going better than him says everything about the strength of their list.

Disappointing thread.

I agree that Newnes isn't quite good enough to be a top notch mid, so we were right to move him on.
(And whilst wishing him well I somewhat churlishly hope that decision is vindicated by him not playing well at Carlton!).

But I've got no doubt Newnes tried his guts out for us.

He deserves respect for his commitment and service over a "handy" 150 game career.
He doesn't deserve abuse and disrespect for giving it his best shot!

To all those putting s*** on him, I ask" How many AFL games did you play? "

And, for what it's worth, we didn't get rid of him. He gave us the flick.

We effectively did by offering him a new contact based on his real worth. Fortunately, Carlton were foolish enough to take the bait and good on ol mate Newnsey for going there. Let’s all hope he can be part of their problem this year and next !
