How good was Dunstan early?
Set up our running players many times.
Hard at the ball, then won it ,then dished it off
Well done Luke, doing the 7 proud

yes, looked like he's up for the fight, positions are going to be hard won this year. Be excellent for us if he steps up a notch.

Almost looked...
Like he had gained a step. Perhaps a bit lighter?

He’s surprised me. Used to think he was a one-trick “in-and-under”, but I’m forced to concede there’s more to him than that.
The fact that there is going to be more competition for spots - not as many walk-up starts - is going to bring out the best in our squad.

I really liked the way they filmed the game last night. Lots of super tight closeups on the centre square and Dunstan and Steele were working so hard in there.

He had the sleeves rolled up from the first bounce. Is that a signaling of how he intends to approach 2020. I hope so.

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
Dunstan finished 8th in our b&f last season & was very good in the back half of the season.
He is a slow burn is Dunstan, the acquisition of Hill & Butler as well as hopefully a fit Hannebery will allow us to better utilise his skill set. He has runners with foot skills to distribute the ball now.
The other thing that appeals to me is his ability to bob up with a goal or 2. He plays in a similar fashion to Stephen Powell did for a period

and that's the bottom line

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
Was a very highly regarded junior in SA, captaining their Under 18 side from memory
Started his AFL career with distinction
But a raft of injuries including shoulder injuries have impacted his progress since that start
As mentioned he is able to hit the scoreboard
Hopefully we see the best of him this year now he is around the 100 game mark

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
I think the knock on Dunstan has always been running power and endurance.
Turns himself out in great shape each pre-season, hard at it and strong, I like him.
Solid C-grade midfielder IMO.
Good depth but if he’s in your top group of mids you are battling.
If he is playing at Sandy and dominating we are having a good season.

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
We are still an A-grade midfielder short of a midfleid that has the depth to be a sustainable top 4 side, arguably 2.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Sun 23 Feb 2020 12:34pm I think the knock on Dunstan has always been running power and endurance.

We need one of two thing to fix this, we either need a player in our current midfielder to improve up to the grade, or we need to be lucky at the trade table this year.
I tend to think the opposite if the likes of Dunny is playing at Sandy this year it could mean we are having a crap year as we still don't have a midfield that runs 4 and 5 deep which is mandatory for entering finals and especially the top 4.
For us to scrape into the finals this year we need the likes of either Dunny, Ross, and to a lesser extent Steele to go up a gear and possibly throw Sinclair in that mix as well.
We desperately need someone from within to grow into an A-grade midfielder. It's the one area of our list which doesn't have depth of quality.

Worth a look.
Think Dunstan could be one of those players who surprise over the next 3 years.

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
Exactly.
Because we haven't had much to hang our hats on over the past few years we've placed all our hope and expectations in some kids.
Billings, Dunstan, Sinclair and Co are still 2 or 3 years away from the start of their prime.
Now they're not expected to be the best player on the ground and can play supporting act roles to the likes of hanners and Hill we'll see a lot more out of them all.

Re: How good was Dunstan early?
The typical Dunstan game consists of one great quarter where he gets a dozen possessions (it's often the 1st quarter of games), a couple of quarters where he gets about 4 possessions, and one quarter where he gets one or two possessions. His good quarters are impressive, but rest are unremarkable at best. Sinclair's games follow a similar pattern. How many games has either player had where they have had four quarters of solid output? They're hard to find, and I can't remember any. If Dunstan and Sinclair continue this pattern of performance, then they will be overtaken by the likes of Bytel and Byrnes by mid 2021.
The good thing now, though, is that they are competing with many others for there spots in the team. Hopefully, this will lead them to push harder than they ever have.
