The embarrassing thing was that was the one thing the club came out and said we were going to rectify last year and we focussed on it. Just shake my head.ausfatcat wrote: ↑Mon 17 Feb 2020 9:31pm Well confirms what we already knew but the saints had the worst goal accuracy in 2019 at 42.6% behind freo at 44% (West coast on top at 51.3%)

Is it because we can't kick for goal, or because we are taking shots from poor angles making the likelihood of scoring more difficult, or we are under pressure to score because our ball movement into the fwd line is haphazard and we're constantly under pressure?
Reckon it's all three personally

The stat BR will be focusing on will be something he calls "effective score". It is a focus on the strategy around potential to score. Weighting is given to the different scoring options for things such as postion on ground, pressure on the scorer, and also the condition the scorer was in at the time of shot, i.e. fatigue levels. Frequency of potential to score is also monitored. The effective score is shown to the players at the breaks and coaching direction is given accordingly.Moods wrote: ↑Mon 17 Feb 2020 11:07pmThe embarrassing thing was that was the one thing the club came out and said we were going to rectify last year and we focussed on it. I'm guessing the main tweak to the game plan will be the mechanism into the forward line with the effective score stat being central to measuring how well we are going with regards to creating good scoring options.

Ben Dixon should be given a framed copy of this as formal recognition of his contributions.

Re: Officiall the worst shots for goal 2019
Absolutely pathetic
Even 51.3% for West Coast is very poor
Six (?) metres of goal space, you can miss centre by over 2 metres & still score a goal !
Too much thinking when kicking for goal
Go back, pick your spot, go through your process, kick the goal

It's not a huge range, is it? What is the percentage measuring exactly? Is it goals to shots? or any score (i.e., goals or points) to shots? or goals to points? or what?!

You can see full team and individual goalkicking data from the last few years at https://www.statsinsider.com.au/afl/shot-charting. As a Saints fan it's pretty illuminating... and damning.

Re: Officiall the worst shots for goal 2019
If we had have had the best set shot %, how many more games would we have won?
Some quick calculations on how this would have affected percentage. If nothing changed but our accuracy from 42% to 51%, our percentage would be 99% (up from 83%).
This is still only equivalent to roughly 12th or 13th spot (Adelaide 100.5% 11th, Nth Melb 99.5% 12th, Freo 93.5 13th)
