Will King have meaningful impact this year?

Post: # 1837954Post saintspremiers »

I reckon not.

He will need lots of support but will still be useful.

I’ve lowered my expectations a bit. Once Ryder retires he will fire.

The only efffect Ryder will have on King is some cleaner ball from clearances. King will be useful and can easily see him kicking 30 goals.

30 goals seems like it would be a phenomenal return for what is essentially a first year player.

If he kicks 30 I would say he’s Nick Riewoldt 2

Not really if he plays every game it’s fair to think one a game at a minimum will happen.

I don't think KIng has the build right now to make a "meaningful impact" - not as as a key forward, anyway.
Maybe a half forward flank or roaming forward role would suit, where he can find some space, and be that tall, mobile/linking forward that we've been missing - until he builds up?
Say, 60-80 metres from goal.

Like a Tom Lynch (of Adelaide) type role - but with not as much running/roaming?

Isn't it always hard to know what to expect without a sample or body of work and we don't have to look too far back in the club's history to find examples of high DPs failing. The kid is a porcelain giraffe atm so he's got some work to do before he has the physique and endurance to mix it with the big boys consistently. I dont think he'll debut until after round 4 minimum.

His brother has played full forward.

Theoretically he should go better than his brother so should play at least 10 games and kick 15 goals.

Good point ... I'm guessing and speculating on where he might be better suited right now, based on his build.

And, there might be games where we end up with a more open forward line ... which would suit him.

But, for all I know, he and his brother could be your classical strong, wiry types - that can handle a key position and can punch well above their weight right now.

I reckon King will be in the top 5 for contested marks this year and kick 35 goals. If his knee holds up.

That's about what I expect as well, Ratten has already stated that he is going to get as many games into MK as possible.

I rate him in the same category as Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke when they started out in 2001, except that he will debut in what will ostensibly be his 2nd year at the club. Like Roo and Kosi, I believe MK will very soon show his class and if he can stay fit will play a lot of games and kick many goals.

If he doesn't kick at least one bag of 5 in his first year - I'd be disappointed.

The natural lack of consistency from a young key forward, and mediocre midfield delivery will dictate his season's stats largely though.

No, not really.

More 'follower' than 'supporter'.

And to be honest, if being a supporter means lying about the abilities of the players, and failure to observe the performances of the team objectively - then I'm happy to leave that up to the deadshit losers out there.

Im guessing 15 games and if he kicks 20 goals then that's probably a good result considering he hasnt played a game. We cant put too much pressure on him just yet..

Lot's of fwd line crumbing drills at the open training session on Wednesday so creating a contest, bringing the ball to ground and not being outmarked are probably his priorities atm..

I've been to about 5 AFL games in the last 10 years. Probably 3 if them were Saints games.

To put that in context - I've been to 2 MLB games and an NBA game in that time.

So yeah, fair to say I don't turn up. Like most Saints fans - I have better s*** to do with my life.

No. I suppose you wouldn't. Then, I'm one of those tragics, who buys 6 memberships, plans flights, arranges weekends, accommodation and rental cars to get to 4 or 5 games a year from.1800 klicks away.
I'm addicted to it. You see I live in the hope that a flag might give the silent 250k fans something to get excited about, outside of their other interests, pass times and fancies.
