I'm flattering the supporters. I'm suggesting that the average Saints fan is not a mindless cretin that hangs his or her self-worth on the results of the football team they follow.
Nick and his other Nick’s turns over a new leaf.

Re: Nick and his other Nick’s turns over a new leaf.
on the whole this has been a good discussion - so thanks guys
I couldnt really concern myself over supporter numbers to me it matters little
The same with fixture schedule of the big clubs, yes while that does not benefit us with air time it does revenue wise
So back to chYna - agreed what the club has dished up so far has been utterly disgraceful
Where does the blame lie?
People of this board have told me repeatedly we have the best support staff going round ( disregarding any coach discussion at the moment) and our board management is highly regarded business wise
Did the club grab all the financial incentive from the chyna game and not allocate enough for player support or was the playing group under-resourced and take the whole thing as a bit of a joke
It will be interesting to see the attitude now we have "built" a team that will be finals bound

Part of the financial gain is taxpayer funded so hopefully some of those funds are directed towards team support.

Re: Nick and his other Nick’s turns over a new leaf.
the relevant question seems to be
... where do the new supporters come from ?
gotta be the kids
it’d take 10-15 years to maybe start paying dividends
idea
send 100 kids sized jumpers to Pakistan with Wasim
and a dozen pills
... who knows what may grow out of it
idea #2 through #1001
blah blah blah
there must be a thousand innovative ways
of connecting with the kids
‘n staying connected until they have kids
there’s plenty of kids in India
... hello mr warne
plenty in australia , plenty of kids everywhere
best get ‘st kilda’ in their heads , somehow
and hey presto
we become a big club

Personally, I think that the only lifelong fans an AFL
Club (or any sporting entity these days) will get are the ones 'born into it'.
ie. The ones that follow what their parents follow.
Given we have a small base now, we will never make ground on the other clubs in this sense. The gap will just get bigger.
Regarding other kids, those ones don't stick anyway. t's actually socially acceptable these days to change teams. It's Ok to change teams, the same as players and coaches do.
It's even less important to actually give much of a s*** if your team is no good. If they don't swap teams when their team sucks - Kids simply turn their attention to the plethora of other sports on offer. They'll suddenly start wearing NBA singlets or Premier league jerseys and cheer for whoever is winning, until the footy becomes interesting again.
You lose them as quickly as you get them.
So the concept of growing a supporter base is a myth.
The bases don't change much. They never have.
You either relocate to capture an entire new market, or you just scrap around trying to capture members from the supporters you already have - or try to 'lease' some supporters from the 'swinging supporter pool' for a year or two.
The dream of being a big club is a waste of time. I don't know why it matters to people to be honest.
Who cares?
Hearing Richmond and Collingwood supporters argue about who's club is bigger is just cringe worthy. It's as embarrassing as it is irrelevant.

Well after all of the discussion about the China match against Port, and after the publicity of the recent pandemic in Wuhan this week, I would hope that club and team are a lot better prepared and organised than they were last year.
And I would like us to at least be able to compete until half time just once in a Pride Game against the Swans too.

Re: Nick and his other Nick’s turns over a new leaf.
When the team play overseas or interstate - or on a long haul trip to Geelong, who is responsible for player nutrition and their conditioning for a match? Fine out who that is and you have your answer.sunsaint wrote: ↑Wed 22 Jan 2020 5:55pm on the whole this has been a good discussion - so thanks guys

Also; whomever allowed a sick player to get on the plane at Tullamarine and fly out with the rest of the squad.
The selection of our captain to come back from a long lay off with compartment syndrome of all things, the very week we have to jump on a plane and fly to the northern hemisphere and play.
The whole thing was an absolute farce as far as anybody with any connection to St KIlda is concerned. Club and team were absolutely schooled in all facets of match preparation, including sports nutrition, match conditioning and player management.

There are supporter bases of various sizes but the club can't' just accept that and think things can't change. Good results converts supporters to members. More members means more resources. Better resources should convert to better results. And the club has to do it's best to increase membership, use resources better and improve results.
I don't care which is the biggest club, but if the environment changes so that a club has to move, merge or fold you don't want to be the smallest club in Melbourne.

If you can present some figures to suggest that all Saints fans breed 3 times more than Collingwood supporters - then your point may not be the most idiotic thing I've read this week. If not, well, you know...

Re: Nick and his other Nick’s turns over a new leaf.
I'm reading yours.
I respect your input.
I sense a bit of 'if we did this we could be a big club' however - which I dont agree with. But that's not to say I don't respect your opinion.
Australia Day is like a wake.
I celebrate someone's life and reflect on the great things they did and felt, and genuinely see it as a celebration. I see a wake as a party.
However even when I personally don't have an underlying sense of loss and sadness - I'm aware that there are others in the room that do. So I adjust my actions accordingly so as not come across as a disrespectful jerk.
So on Australia Day I reflect on how lucky I am and how great this place is - which is literally due to the Poms taking over. But I don't party like John Belushi on the day, 'cause I'm aware that although some of us clearly prospered from that event - not all of us did.
Personally, I hate the fact that I'm asked to party hard at a wake. It just doesn't feel right.

Dad was 25 when he came to Victoria from Capricorn Coastal QLD.. They played Rugby up there as kids and I wonder if he had mush heard of StKFC less so barracked for them,.
Lived in StKilda East. The Saints were terrible, I mean diabolical, but he liked the local vibe, and developed a following for them.
Good enough for me.
I insist that we have a presence in St Kilda to catch this transient and open minded cultural wind I'm our sails and then we can get some following, maybe not from hard core footy tragics but from the new people.

If not, why would anybody support a team that plays an annoyingly boring brand of footy and can't even beat a bottom side, or a mid-tier side?Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Sat 25 Jan 2020 1:54amIf we can play 2 games in NZ every year we will capture all the Kiwis that emigrate to Australia.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Fri 24 Jan 2020 9:45pm Dad was 25 when he came to Victoria from Capricorn Coastal QLD..
