The boy Mayo
With the moving on of Bruce & the likelyhood of Paddy McC not featuring in the short term, can the boy Mayo form part of the forward line function next year?
I have not seen him play or heard much of his performance at Sandy in the second half of the year or whether the club is confident of his improved performance. Although he has signed on for 2020.
Can anyone provide info?
6foot 3 - same height as Battle

Re: The boy Mayo
He has talent, but is still very raw.
2020 he will have the advantage of a doing a full pre-season at AFL level which he did not have last year.

If he is good enough he can Jack Darling 191 & Jake Stringer 192, plus I read somewhere Mayo was 193cm not that it makes that much difference. Nick Reiwoldt was 193cm. Its not just about their height!

He needs some bigger guys to sandwich opponents. Then he can jump on top.

Re: The boy Mayo
Plugger was 191cm and 110kg
Mayo is 192cm and 81kg
Who is the bigger person?
And more importantly who is the better player, at Mayo’s age plugger had nearly 50 games and nearly 150 goals

Re: The boy Mayo
I was merely trying to highlight that Mayo wasn't too small for a forward key position player.
Jason Heatley who kicked 160 odd goals from 60 games at Full forward was only 187cm and 92 kgs.

Re: The boy Mayo
The game keeps evolving and KPP are getting taller. Unless you are super strong with big upper body strength and solid weight wise (think Skunk), height is a huge factor.
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

Re: The boy Mayo
Players are a lot taller these days, so little point quoting the heights from days gone past.
ie Pup Sarau would struggle in the ruck these days.

He had the bulk of the hulk and knew how to use.
Try to tackle him, he would break the tackle if you were lucky, before he swatted you.
He had the leap to outmark opponents from behind.
A powerful mark and agile at ground level.
Once in front no-one could get around him.
Phenomenal acceleration and timing on a lead, no defenders could catch him.
After a while coaches would sacrifice some poor guy who had lost popularity.
He would be stationed ahead of Plugger and required to run sideways to where-ever Plugger was leading.
If foolish enough to follow coaches orders the guy would not play for a few weeks.
Being run over by a rhino is not pleasant.
Osteitis pubis and excess weight hampered him later in his career but before then he could and did everything.
Oh I nearly forgot, he was a professional goal kicker, short ball drop, long kick, most accurate ever except for maybe Peter McKenna.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Re: The boy Mayo
We recruited Mayo from Claremont 2nds.
Interesting we took him rather than go for a ruck at the time. Both Pierce and Longer were gone with concussion. We only had Rowe as a backup and he would be slaughtered at AFL level in the ruck if Marshall had got injured.
So someone in the club must believe Mayo will be special because we went long term rather than immediate needs. But he needs lots of development time..
